AUSD CONNECTION
NEWS FROM ALHAMBRA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Message from the Superintendent
Dear AUSD Community,
As the temperatures begin to drop and daylight savings comes to an end, it’s clear that autumn has fully arrived in our wonderful community.
Halloween is nearly upon us! I know children are eager to put on their costumes for fun community activities and/or an evening of trick-or-treating. Safety is paramount during this time of year, so here are a few safety reminders to keep in mind:
Ensure costumes are visible with reflective materials
Accompany younger children while trick-or-treating
Inspect all treats before your child consumes them to ensure they are safe
I hope you were able to visit our Students Support Services team at last night’s Alhambra Trunk-or-Treat. The team enjoyed visiting with the students and family members who stopped by to visit them. Look for them throughout the year at various events throughout the district and community. There are several additional fall/Halloween events at our schools tonight and celebrations throughout the community over the next few days – it’s a great time to spend time together with family and friends. Our students have a well-deserved long weekend, so it’s the perfect time to do something special as a family.
With the end of daylight savings just around the corner, we'll be adjusting our clocks next weekend on November 5th. Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour on that day, which means an extra hour of sleep!
Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable weekend. Please take care, stay warm, and enjoy Halloween and fall moments with your loved ones.
Warmest Regards,
Denise R. Jaramillo, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Featured Event: Park School Centennial Celebration
Happy Birthday, Park School! 🎉🎂🎈
This Sunday, Park School will officially turn 100-years-old! To celebrate this milestone, Park held a day-long celebration today with a schoolwide assembly, music, a time capsule, crafts, and birthday cake! Special guests included three former Park principals (Marsha Gilbert, Rachael Simidian-Nicoll, and Barbara Wong) and staff/student alumni (including Mr. Danal Snyder, who attended Park 1949-1958). Congratulations to Principal Carin Gasca and the entire Park School Family for a fabulous celebration! We look forward to seeing what the next 100 years will bring at Park!

To access this information, simply log in to the parent portal and click on the 'assets' link in the left panel. You'll find a list of devices issued to your student, displaying relevant device details. If you have any questions about the device(s) listed, please contact your child's school site.

Alhambra Police Department's Annual Trunk or Treat
On Thursday, October 26th, AUSD’s Student Support Services Team had fun passing out treats at the Alhambra Police Department’s Annual Trunk or Treat. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say "Trick or Treat."
Tips for Traveling Safely To and From School
We often hear that our parents/guardians have many concerns about their children(s) journey to and from school. AUSD recognizes that our students travel to school each day in a variety of ways including by school bus, by vehicle, by bicycle, and by foot. We have included Tips for Traveling to and From School Safely for you to review. Also, please know that the California Education Code protects your child's journey on their direct root to and from school and school activities. So if situations arise involving your student and other students, please contact your school administrator. Lastly, some parents have made the misstep of having their children carry items to protect themselves on their journey to and from school. Items such as pepper spray, mace, stun guns, and knives are never permitted on a school campus and will lead to disciplinary action that may include suspension and/or expulsion. It should also be noted that carrying such items may place your child in unintended danger as a person wishing to cause harm could take and use the items against them. We want to see each of our students travel safely to and from school and to have a positive, safe, and predictable educational experience each day at our schools. Thank you for your support in keeping each child and our schools safe.

LITTLE BITS OF GOOD NEWS & INFORMATION FROM AROUND THE DISTRICT
Here is a touch of Halloween fun from two of our schools, Ynez School and Moor Field Early Education Center. To view photos of other school's' Halloween events (that were submitted after the newsletter deadline), please visit the AUSD social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter/X).
UNITY DAY is celebrated on the third Wednesday in October with a common goal to make stronger connections among each other to help prevent bullying and create a healthier environment for all. As part of the Call to Action, people are encouraged to wear orange as a show of solidarity. (Orange is a color associated with safety and visibility.) Thank you to all the schools who participated this year. Here is a photo from Fremont School's Unity Day activities.
AUSD’s Student Advisory Council members continue to increase their skills and knowledge. Earlier this month, three of members traveled to Irvine to attend the California Association of Student Councils’ Student Board Member Symposium. Justin Wang (AHS senior & AUSD Student Board Member), Leslie Chu (AHS freshman), Angelina Yip (MKHS freshman), and administrative intern Ms. Lisa Sanchez connected with student leaders, exchanged ideas, prepared presentations, and met with community leaders.
On October 17th, the Garfield School Wildcat Staff and their families cheered on the Los Angeles Clippers. Thank you to the LA Clippers School Program for inviting Garfield's staff for such a fun evening. Staff members who attended were: Richard Garcia, Jennifer Alcala, Annie Wong, Jennifer Lankford, Natalie Elias, and Jennifer Tran.
This month, five of Alhambra Unified School District TK teachers attended a TK Institute, which included a Lego Exploration. The institute was offered by the LA County of Education (LACOE) and was held at Almansor Court. Thank you to Mackenna Karasawa, Jung Hoang, Claudia Ralston, Natalie Danielsen and Elizabeth Downard for all of your hard work and dedication for our little ones.
Red Ribbon Week is an annual campaign to encourage our youth to live a drug-free life. Several schools in our district held Red Ribbon activities throughout the week. Here is a photo from Ynez School's lunchtime activities. Students had the opportunity to get temporary tattoos & stickers and to make bracelets with drug-free messages. They also added their names to the pledge wall and pledge poster. Ynez's TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention Education) Advocate Club led all the activities.
Harvest of the Month - Pomegranates
AUSD teachers have the option to sign up for our Farm-to-School Program, "Harvest of the Month." Each month will feature a different fruit or vegetable, information, student activities, recipes, and sampling kits. Here is a video featuring October's Harvest of the Month: Pomegranates!
National School Lunch Week
The week of October 9-13th, AUSD schools and the Food and Nutrition Services department celebrated National School Lunch Week. Each elementary schools held frequent diner card contests. The students had fun collecting stamps on their cards daily during lunchtime. At the end of the week the students who had lunch from the cafeteria every day turned in their cards. Each cafeteria held a grand prize drawing and the winners were given a bag full of games, activities and more. Congratulations to all of our AUSD Elementary School Winners!

Featured Event: Celebrating AUSD Site Administrators
On October 24th, AUSD's Executive Cabinet and Student Support Services celebrated site administrators with a drive-through breakfast pick-up. October 8th - 14th was designated by the California Department of Education (CDE) as "Week of the School Administrator," but AUSD chose to celebrate on the 24th because most assistant principals were already scheduled to be at the district office for a meeting that day. Principals and other site administrators came through the drive-through first thing in the morning and picked up their breakfast on the way to their school campus.
