Maungatapere School

During the holidays Maungatapere students helped run the local ANZAC service at Maungatapere Hall/Community Centre. The hall was full of locals and a high number of school families and students. A comment made was that this was the largest turnout in recent years. Mike Eagles organised a group of our senior students to run the service. Ava N acted as MC for service, which started with our National Anthems, followed by Chloe C’s ANZAC speech. I spoke about the value of students being involved in ANZAC Day, as well as Maungatapere Schools 2010 yearlong topic about war, being the most memorable school learning I had been involved as a teacher at time. I read a news article from the Advocate, about the 2010 Trench Day experience and discussed the impact and appropriateness for student learning. Mr Eagles shared some recent research into a returned serviceman from the area, L. Mooney who died in Crete. Mike read his obituary and was given this information from L. Mooney's nephew who still lives in this community.

On Monday morning, all car line students practised again getting into their car lines in the listed

name order. This has helped us more efficiently tick off student names, then move over to the gates to send them home. On Tuesday we made it to the gates 3pm, and by 3:06 most of the students had left the grounds. It is getting faster. During our staff review and adjustment of transport lines, it has been identified that up to 190 students leave through the carpark. Safety is our highest priority and we are continuing to trial improvements. Over the next few days we look to be challenged with wet weather complicating pickup at the gate. Drivers please be extra cautious.

Thank you for your support keeping all children safe.

Since last week we have had up to four police constables at school each day, supporting the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme delivery. The staff and students are very comfortable with their daily presence. This programme provides knowledge, awareness and strategies to deal with a range of situations that help children keep themselves safe. Please ask at home about the learning they are covering at school to reinforce their understanding.

Reminder: As of Term 2 we ask students to leave their Jibbitz at home. Children can save them for the weekend. What is a Jibbit. The answer, is they are the charms or accessories that help you customize your Crocs!

The trading, arguments, competitiveness, trendiness, and pressure to have them has caused many issues for children and teachers throughout this term. We want students to be focused on learning.

The teachers were very supportive of this decision.

After 4 successful years the current Maunga Mayhem committee are stepping down. If the community are still keen for this event to continue we are going to need a new core committee to take up the mantle. If you would be interested in being involved please let the office know with your details by the 29th May. Also if anyone has suggestions for a new venue for the Maunga Mayhem event please also let the office know.
