All In. All Win.
From the Office
Hello Family!
We have completed our first full week of school. We are off to a great start. We thank you for your patience as we work to make the outside (arrival/dismissal) as smooth as things are inside. This is our first of many family newsletters this school year. This will be a biweekly publication to share news, events and how to Rock Your Role this school year.
We are so grateful for your partnership and look forward to the greatness ahead.
❤️J. Johnson
STAAR Accountability Report
Students and staff worked diligently to achieve an A rating for accountability from the state. In addition to our A rating, we earned a distinction for post-secondary readiness. We are proud of the work that we’ve done so far, but understand that there’s always more to be done. Our goal is to maintain our A rating and earn more distinctions this school year. We need your help to do so.
Your role:
- Attendance: Please make sure your child is at school as much as possible. Attendance rates affect our accountability scores. In addition to accountability, it affects your child’s time and opportunity to master instruction. We cannot give them instruction if they aren’t there to receive it.
- Practice Skills: The skills that students obtain at school can be transferred. Please ensure that students read and apply their math skills at home. Read daily, whether it’s books, magazines or signs on the road. Allow your child to cook with you. Lots of opportunities for reading, math, social skills, etc. in these moments.
Arrival/Dismissal
Our arrival and dismissal times are improving. If you were worried about your child being marked tardy or missing breakfast, worry no more. Our bell rings for instruction to begin at 7:30 a.m. We ensure that all students have the opportunity to receive breakfast. We give grace for those who are delayed by our line as we request your grace as we make our line more efficient.
Your Role:
- Students should be prepared to get out of the car once you enter the gate.
- Teach your student to get out of your vehicle independently. Our staff are there primarily for supervision. Opening every car door slows the line down.
- Have your tag at dismissal. Our system is created to use the code on the tag.
- Follow the flow of traffic.
Lunch Visitors
We will begin opening our doors to lunch visitors next Monday, August 29. Please come prepared with your ID. Only those listed in Skyward may eat with the student. Students with lunch visitors will meet their visitor in Room 111. The visitor will go straight to 111 upon signing in. We will bring the student to 111.
Your Role:
- Have your ID ready upon coming to the campus.
- Meet your student in room 111.
- Eat with your student only.
Birthday Celebrations
Please be advised that there are no birthday celebrations in class this year. This is the policy for all MISD elementary campuses. We want to focus our instructional time on instruction. You are welcome to drop off invitations (for every student in the class) to be shared. If items for birthday celebrations or invitations that do not include each student in the class are brought in, they will be declined and returned.
Your Role:
- Adhere to expectations above.
- If bringing party invitations, ensure there is one for each student in the class.
MISD Lunch Menus
All students are eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch.
What to Wear
Sam Houston students are expected to adhere to the district dress code. You may review the dress code at the link below. On Thursday, students may wear a college or military shirt with uniform bottoms. Friday is Maverick or Sam Houston spirit day. Students may wear a Maverick or Sam Houston spirit shirt with school appropriate jeans.
These are NOT free dress days.
Your role:
- Review the district dress code.
- Ensure that student attire adheres to the dress code.
School-Home Communication
We strive to ensure we communicate with everyone through a variety of platforms. This includes Facebook, our Sam Houston webpage (https://www.marshallisd.com/o/shes), Remind and more. If you have any questions regarding policies, procedures, student performance or otherwise, please be sure to reach out to us so that we can answer your questions.
