University School Weekly Update

We hope everyone was able to enjoy the weekend break! As we prepare for the week ahead, we ask that you please review the information below:

Thanks to everyone who supported and/or joined us for our fall festival Friday evening. We couldn’t have pulled it off without all of the amazing volunteers, parents, kids, sponsors, faculty, and administrative folks who put their time, energy, and heart into this fabulous event!

The event was so successful, we actually ran out of some shirt sizes, but are happy to order more for anyone who didn’t get their preferred size for a reduced cost. Please just send an email to Usfoundation.fundraising@gmail.com or message the foundation through the University School Foundation Facebook page and we will get you taken care of!

Elementary School Honoree – Zaara Chakraborty

Every morning, Zaara enters the 1st grade classroom and brings the sunshine along with her! When asking for a volunteer in class, Zaara is always up for the job and eager to help. Zaara shows kindness through both her words and actions. Her love for learning is shown daily.

Getting to know…Zaara Chakraborty:

• If you could take a vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you go? “Myrtle Beach, because of the vast ocean and I can build sandcastles.”
• What is the best gift you've ever given someone? “Love and hugs.”
• If you could have any pet, what would it be? “Puppy, to keep our current puppy Max from being lonely when he is at home. I want to be a veterinarian when I grow up, so I can take care of lots of animals.”

“Zaara is a classroom leader in every way,” pointed out Zaara’s 1st-grade teacher, Ms. Heather Jeffers. “She is kind to everyone, always eager to help and greets each school day with a genuine love for learning. Zaara’s respect and consideration for others is consistently shown not just through the words she speaks but the choices she makes.”

Middle School Honoree – Emmajyn Mayhew

Emmajyn is a caring and kind person with a readiness to help others. She is a shining example of compassion and exemplary work ethic. In both athletics and the classroom, she maintains a positive and enthusiastic attitude.

Getting to know…Emmajyn Mayhew:

• If you could take a vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you go? “If I could go anywhere I would go to Greece, because I love Greek Mythology and it would be really cool to go to Athens and Sparta and see all of the historical events that happened there.”
• What is the best gift you've ever given someone? “The best gift I've ever given to someone is a gold necklace with a paw print because the person I gave it to loves dogs.”
• If you could have any pet, what would it be? “If I could have any pet I would want a horse, because I love horses. Horses are majestic and strong. I think it would be really cool to own a horse, because I could go horseback riding and lots of other fun stuff.

"Emmajyn can light up a room with her smile and joyful personality," said her middle school teachers.

High School Honoree – Raegan Hensley

Raegan has had such a positive attitude this year, coming into class each day ready to go. She shows that she is actively engaged by leaning in and making eye contact, often asking questions or volunteering to answer. She shows excitement when she understands and has the opportunity to share. Raegan is also very kind to her peers and teachers, demonstrating genuine concern for everyone's well-being.

Getting to know…Raegan Hensley:

• If you could take a vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you go? “Greece, because it is a gorgeous place and a once in a lifetime experience trip.
• What is the best gift you've ever given someone? “Concert tickets, this was my favorite gift because I have always wanted to go to this concert and I won’t ever forget it.”
• If you could have any pet, what would it be? “An Elephant, because they are so smart, and such big animals.”

"Raegan personifies the culture we value at University School by continually working hard to improve herself and demonstrating kindness to everyone,” said Ms. April Sims, Raegan’s Geometry teacher. “I have seen her show concern for others, myself included, even on days when she might be the one needing that kindness."

Prestige photography is offering another opportunity for our seniors to be photographed for their senior portraits.

Prestige photographers will be set up for senior portraits on Saturday, October 23rd at Daniel Boone HS in Gray, Tennessee with appointments open to all area seniors.

The sessions offered on this day will include formal and casual poses, option for outdoor poses and a cap & gown session.

Prestige will provide the formal tux and drape as well as a cap & gown in our school colors.

It is time to register for Spring Dual Enrollment classes at ETSU is open for eligible students!

Registration:

• You must turn in a dual enrollment authorization form before you can register on Nov 5.
• Registration in Goldlink starts Nov 5. If you want a specific class, we strongly encourage you to register early.
• All forms need to be submitted by Oct. 31 in order to register on Nov. 5.

Grant:

• The TSAC grant has changed and will now pay for classes #3 and #4 starting this spring, based on 3 credit hour classes. You must qualify for the TSAC Dual Enrollment grant. Four credit hour classes may have additional charges.
• ETSU Scholarship for students on classes #5-#10. This scholarship is awarded to students with high school GPA of 3.4 or higher. The scholarship allows one class per semester to cost $75 with the scholarship amount added to the grant amount.

Congratulations University High School Girls Soccer, District Runner-up!

Congratulations to the University School Middle School Boys' Cross-Country team who qualified as a team for the state championships in Knoxville at the end of the month. The boys' team has been strong finishers individually and as a team this season. The team includes: Lucas Mathewes , Connor Shaw, Harry Harker, Felix Duncan, Gavin Olsen, Daniel Rojas, Avian Pate, Peter Reeves, Joshua Jung, Creed Osborne, Ben Jones, Shane Summey, Ayaan (Ion) Setti, Owen Henley, Mason Dempsey, and Bobby Bray.

Congratulations to the University School Middle School Girls' Cross-Country team for finishing strong this season. Lucy Smith and Ruth Mathewes both qualified for the State championship meet at the end of this month. Way to go Ruth and Lucy!!

To aid in the support of athletics at University School, the University School Foundation Athletics Committee (USFAC) will be selling Sports Passes this year to cover the cost of operating the USFAC programs. Passes include admission to all HOME Athletic Events for the entire 2021-22 school year. Passes do not include admission to away games or tournament play. Family passes are non transferable and must be presented at the gate for admission to the athletic event. Each family member (immediate household) will receive his or her own pass that must be presented for admission into home contests.
