An Update From Mr.Castonguay...Windham Academy Public Charter School

March 2023:

Dear WA Community,

As we are now into spring (Can you believe it?!), I'd like to take a moment to thank our entire WA community for everyone's committment and dedication to our school so far this school year! We could not do all that we do without you! It is hard to believe we only have a few months left to the school year! The next few months will be extremely busy for all of us with school events, spring town sports, and much more. I hope that our entire community enjoys these next few months ahead! They are busy ones but fun ones, too!

Wishing you a healthy spring season!

- Mr. Castonguay

Update from Mrs. Wilcox (Art):

Hey WA Families! Our creative kids are going strong with their art projects. Throughout the year we have been sprinkling in activities that will be featured in our Closing House/Art & STEM show on June 8th. There will be so much art on display and I can't wait!!

This month our focus has been on studying Pointillism and catching up on past projects that need finishing. Our 45 minute class time flies by!! With April quickly approaching, we will be working on projects featuring different countries like Japan, Russia, Egypt, and India. There will also be lots of spring related activities that you will be seeing both in the hallways of WA and being sent home. After a long winter, we definitely need some flowers and bright colors!

Please be on the lookout for finished projects. If you aren't seeing them, please don't worry! I'm keeping them safe for the art show :) Happy Spring!!

Grade 7 - We just finished up mBot robotics and we are moving on to learning to code apps in code.org using JavaScript.

Update from Mr. Mike (PE):

Although this past month brought us a lot of snow, we made the best out of it! Each class warmed up with a game that included running each day, such as “Fox at Midnight.” After 15 minutes, students played a team game as they worked together and learned the value of teamwork. As the weather starts to brighten up, students will be playing a lot more sports, rather than games. I am looking forward to teaching students how to play baseball/softball, basketball, soccer, and more!

Update from Mr. Matt (Music):

In music class recently, students are 'sharing the stage' by participating in a class activity called musical sharing. During musical sharing each week a handful of students showcase a musical item from home, explore musical facts and their favorite songs, or conduct a performance for their classmates. In addition to sharing with each other, students have used their knowledge to identify the sounds of different instruments from all over the world in an instrument bingo game. Some highlights include the sound of the guiro and the sound of the bassoon. Lastly to note is that each week students gather as a class to sing the melodies of their favorite popular songs with accompaniment from their teacher.

Qualifications and Semi-Finals took place last week in school! Qualifications and Semi-Finals took place last week in school!

As we continue our goal at offering additional activities for our students beyond the school day, Windham Academy, in conjunction with Real School of Music, will be starting a school chorus for students in Grades 4-6! We hope to add grade levels in the future if this activity is successful! Thank you to those of you who have reached out expressing excitement for this special day at Fenway Park! If you decide to purchase tickets for this day, you are purchasing tickets for not only your WA student but for whomever else is attending the event as well in your family or circle of friends. Parents/Guardians/Carpooling friends have complete control and have direct responsibility for your children. Some Windham Academy staff will be present to participate with their students, however unlike a regular field trip, the WA staff is not responsible for any student. You may choose who you want to bring with you but this is not a drop off activity. All WA students must be accompanied by an adult.

To receive the tickets, which are valid for the STEM portion of the day and the game itself, you must purchase through Windham Academy no later than March 30th. Each ticket is $23 and this is per person, including children and adults. This is the exact cost that will be paid to the Red Sox. As stated in the order form, any student who attends this event through Windham Academy will be marked "present" for the entire school day. If your child will not be attending this event, he/she must report to school like a normal day. Gates for the morning STEM event open at 8am and the STEM event will last until around lunch time.

As you may know, parking is limited and quite expensive around Fenway Park. Ideas that have been discussed include taking the train into Boston to North Station, then take the Green Line to Kenmore Square, and then walk to Fenway. Other people have discussed driving to Sullivan Square and taking the Orange Line to the Green Line to Kenmore Square. You can transfer to the Green Line at North Station. Some people are using a parking app such as ParkWhiz to find reasonably priced parking near Fenway.
