A Message from the Superintendent
Dear Members of the AUSD Community,
Happy New Year and welcome back from winter recess. I hope the holiday season provided plenty of smiles and that everyone stayed healthy.
I wish I had better news to share as we begin the second semester tomorrow. We will pick up tomorrow where we left off in December, with remote learning only, and our schools and district offices closed to the public, except by appointment. Most staff will work remotely while the spike in COVID infections continues to rise.
But there are reasons to be optimistic about a return to in-person instruction at some point later in the semester. Despite our current pandemic conditions and projections for rising infection rates in January, the vaccine, increased testing capacity, and the Governor's new reopening schools proposal are all reasons to be hopeful and remain positive about bringing students back to campus as soon as possible. In the meantime, we all need to do our share to stop the spread to keep our community safe.
The 12/6/20 Stay Home Order in Riverside County is still in effect. The county also remains in the Purple Tier and is expected to stay in it for multiple weeks to come. Counties must be out of the Purple Tier for no less than two weeks before its schools can consider reopening. Consequently, we will not be able to reopen our schools for students in the hybrid program on January 19, 2021, as we had planned for, and physically prepared our campuses for. I will update our reopening status in next week's message.
The Board of Education meets on January 21 to discuss Governor Newsom's new proposal and update our reopening timeline. Components of the Governor's plan will be announced in the next few weeks, beginning this coming Friday, January 8, when the Governor announces his Administration’s 2021-22 State Budget proposal. The focus of his proposal is to phase in groups of students throughout the spring, beginning with TK-2 students and our most vulnerable children, from all age groups.
The Governor's proposal is built on the following four pillars:
- Funding to Support Safe Reopening
- Safety & Mitigation Measures for Classrooms
- Hands-on Oversight & Assistance for Schools
- Transparency & Accountability for Families and Staff
Learn more about the governor's proposal in a summary report here.
Here are some key dates related to reopening:
January 4, 2021 - Second semester instruction begins remote only
January 8, 2021 - Governor provides more details on his reopening proposal
January 21, 2021 - Board of Education discusses new reopening schools timeline
While we monitor the current conditions and learn more about the Governor's proposal, we will continue to focus our energy on remote learning and supporting our students and their families, our staff, and our community. Learning loss, trauma, developmental setbacks, and other consequences of the pandemic are all priorities for us as we plan ahead for the remainder of this school year, summer, and next fall. Additional resources in the form of the latest federal relief act fund, as well as the Governor's proposal, will be earmarked for that purpose.
The impact of school closure is heartbreaking and the disproportionate damage it is having on our most vulnerable school communities is going to be felt for years to come. The fact that Alvord Unified School District has invested in student support services for many years has positioned us to provide necessary support during these difficult times. It will also provide us with a solid foundation to build upon as we eventually welcome students back to campus.
On behalf of the Board of Education, our team will continue to be the very best we can be while we eagerly await conditions to improve enough for us resume in-person instruction. Encouraging your children to be the very best they can be will go a long way in getting us through this latest pandemic surge as we all look ahead to brighter days.
Please communicate with your teachers, principals, and school staffs immediately if there is an academic, social-emotional, or behavior problem, or related to safety, or food or home insecurity. Do not hesitate to contact us so we can provide services, either directly or indirectly. This coming Wednesday, January 6, our Family Engagement Office is hosting a webinar titled, Managing Stress and Anxiety for a Healthy Family from 4 pm to 5 pm. Find details here or below in the News section under Family Engagement.
In closing, families were made aware of their children's second semester schedules before the winter break. If you are unsure of any changes, class schedules are available in the Aeries parent and student portals. Please contact your principal or counselor if you have any questions. Also, starting tomorrow, families may pick-up meals at school sites closest to their homes. Anyone can pick up a meal for children 18 years old and younger, including neighbors or friends. Find the new meal pick-up schedule here or below in the News section.
Stay healthy. Stay positive. Be well.
