2023-2024 School Board Objectives
Recently, the Board of Trustees adopted their 2023-2024 Objectives. The school board exhibited thoughtful consideration and collaborative efforts in adopting their school board objectives that reflect the best interests of WPUSD schools, students, staff and community. You can find the foundation of their objectives listed below as well as a link to a more detailed outline of their vision for the school year. I could not be more excited to see where these objectives will guide us in our path toward ensuring every student is successful.

New This Month!
We are adding a section of our newsletter dedicated to highlighting our Board of Trustees. I often talk about the importance of knowing people's stories, and I am excited to launch this mini series to help our school community get to know our Board on a more personal level.
Getting to know your Board: Trustee April Nitsos
- What made you want to become a school board member and why? This is actually a funny story. My husband and I were talking about how much fun we had when our kids were in school. As three of our four kids are adults, I was missing the interaction with their friends and the school activities. My husband and I were always very involved in their education - volunteering in their classes and sports. My husband suggested that I think about running for school board, but I had never considered it before. The next day a message came through from WPUSD announcing the need for a board member in Area 2. I kind of laughed and said "wouldn't that be funny if Area 2 was Sheridan; it would be a sign." Sure enough, Area 2 was Sheridan, so I applied.
- Of the newly adopted board objectives, which one resonates most with you and/or which one are you most passionate about and why? I am most passionate about College and Career Readiness. I am so happy that the District and the Board make this a priority. Having a plan past high school, I believe, is so important and somewhat comforting for students. It gives them purpose as they complete high school and hope for what's beyond graduation.
- What does life outside of being a board member look like for you? How do you spend your free time? I wear many hats. First and foremost, I am a wife, mother, and grandmother (Fifi). I also work for Caltrans as a Principal Transportation Engineer in Research and Innovation. I am a real estate agent and my youngest son is a partner agent with me. Finally, my husband and I own a mandarin and Christmas tree farm. People come and pick their own mandarins during November and December. The Christmas trees will be ready in about 3-5 years.
- Name a personal goal that you would like to see accomplished during your time as a board member. I am very passionate about unifying our students. I am striving to end the labeling of our students and help them learn how they can be friends, and support and care for each other no matter how different their background are. As a unified student body and community, so much can be accomplished and relationships can be forged that can withstand even the greatest challenges.

HAVE YOU NOTICED CHANGES TO YOUR STUDENT'S MATH?🧮
You have likely noticed that there are some changes to math lessons your student is bringing home over the past year. Our students are using new math programs: REVEAL for grades K-9, ALEKS for grades 6-8, and iReady diagnostics for high school. There are some adjustments we are making as we implement newly adopted materials, activities, and practices. If you would like to provide feedback on our math programs, contact Lori Fury at Lfury@wpusd.org.
Additionally, we know you are working hard with your students to support their math learning beyond the classroom. Here are some resources for families about math:
WPUSD EARLY LITERACY ASSESSMENTS📖
Reminder for Grades TK-2
This year, teachers in grades TK-2 will be sending home information about your child's 'Beginning of the Year' scores on our District Reading Skills Assessment. These assessments help teachers better understand where your child is starting on their reading journey. Please don't worry over your child's scores, as they only reflect where your child is starting out, and students are not yet expected to have mastered the information in the assessments. So you can track your child's progress, we will send you a progress report at the end of each trimester.
At the end of the first trimester, your child's teacher will schedule a conference with you go over the assessments in more detail and give you the opportunity to ask any questions. We encourage you to take the time out of your busy schedules to meet with your child's teacher, as this will be invaluable information for you to hear. If you have any questions about the assessments or scores, you can reach out to your child's teacher at any time.
ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION HIGHLIGHT: YOU MATTER!🤝
In a world that often encourages conformity, the WPUSD Alternative Education Programs stand
as a beacon of individuality, purpose and empowerment. At the heart of our educational
philosophy is a simple, yet profound message: You matter!
TRANSPORTATION 🚌
Bus Pass Information
Click HERE for bus pass applications and information on bussing. As a reminder, not all schools offer transportation. Please see the transportation application to see if you qualify (if your child's school is not listed on the application, you do not qualify). We offer transportation to all families who live outside of our city limits.
Routes & Times
You can find the Bus Routes and Times on the Transportation website HERE under 'Information'. Or you can find a direct link HERE.
WHAT'S COOKING IN FOOD SERVICE 🎃
New Year, New Look!
Plateful by WPUSD is our official new department name and we have a new logo! We look forward to offering better, more delicious, scratch cooked meals for our students.
Read more about what's on the plate for this year (see what we did there?😉).
Plateful is on Facebook and Instagram! Be sure to follow our pages to see what new menu items are coming up and what locally sourced ingredients you can find in your student's meals.
October Harvest of the Month: Finger Limes
We are excited for October and to celebrate National Farm to School Month! We will be hosting Harvest of the Month tastings at primary schools, joining the state wide Crunch festivities and have some special guest servers in our kitchens!
A Few Reminders. . .
Breakfast and lunch menus can be found HERE.
Remember, meals are free regardless of a family's ability to qualify for meals. However, if you are interested in applying for free/reduced meals you can achieve that here.
Want to help your student get through the lunch line faster? Help them practice their lunch number! It is the last 5 digits of their student ID.
COVID🤒
COVID Protocols
COVID cases are on the rise. Please be alert to potential COVID symptoms in your students, and if they have a fever or test positive, please keep your students home and call the school office.
As of right now, there are no changes to the COVID protocols from when the last school year ended. The biggest change will be in how families can find out if there have been any positive cases at their school site. Rather than sending ParentSquare notifications, families wishing to check recent COVID cases/locations can use the tool on the district website HERE. Information on current protocols, including recommended isolation periods and returning to school after a positive COVID test result can be found on this same page.

VOLUNTARY STUDENT ACCIDENT/HEALTH INSURANCE 🚑
Now Available to ALL Students!
The safety of our students is one of our most important concerns, and we take appropriate steps to protect your child from injuries. Even so, accidents can and do happen during school events resulting medical treatment (ambulance transport, surgery, hospitalization, etc.), which can be very expensive.
Please know that the District does not assume responsibility for these costs. However, as a service to you and your child, your school has joined with thousands of others by offering you access to a low cost, voluntary purchase student accident/health insurance program. The program is arranged and administered by Myers-Stevens and Toohey & Co., Inc., a firm that has specialized in such coverages for 40 years. Parents can enroll and pay for the program online. The District does not accept applications or payment for this program.
Details and an enrollment form are in the links below.

🚨Update Your Emergency Contact Information
🏡Complete the Household Income Form
ANNUAL EMERGENCY CONTACT UPDATE/VERIFICATION🚨
Review/Update Your Emergency Contact Information 2023-2024
At the end of last school year, your child's school sent out notifications to update/verify your emergency contact information using your PowerSchool Parent Portal. As a reminder, this needs to be completed by every returning family. Families who recently registered their child for school (new to WPUSD) do NOT need to complete this process.
For instructions on how to access your PowerSchool Parent Portal account click HERE.
ANNUAL NOTICE OF PARENTS' RIGHTS📃
WPUSD Parents' Rights Handouts
State law requires our school district to provide annual notice to a parent or guardian of certain rights and responsibilities. The parent or guardian is required to acknowledge receipt of this notice by signing and returning the "Annual Parent Notice & Acknowledgement Form" to your student's school. Please only complete this form if you HAVE NOT submitted your Emergency Contact Update online, located HERE
COMPLETE THE HOUSEHOLD INCOME FORM🏠
Please Complete a 2023-24 Household Income Form to Help Your School Maximize Its Funding!
DID YOU KNOW?
A portion of every school's funding is determined by the needs of its students. Extra funding is usually distributed to schools based on submitted free/reduced meal applications but this year the state is providing schools with the option of using the Household Income Form. This form can easily be completed online and will provide your school with extra funding. Please note that for the 2023-2024 school year all students are eligible for FREE meals, so extra funding will be distributed differently and the Household Income Form is the best source to increase your school’s funding.
WHY FILL OUT THE FORM?
- additional support staff for schools, like Instructional Aides, Intervention Support Providers, and after school tutors
- more resources for classrooms and teachers
- additional health and wellness services
- fee waivers for college applications
- fee waivers for college admissions exams (i.e. SAT/ACT/AP)
It’s a quick process and only needs to be completed once for each household. By taking the time to fill out this form, you are taking part in a process that might provide thousands of dollars in funds to the school your student attends. You can also access this form when you are updating your Emergency Contact Information and Waiver Forms in your Parent Portal account.
If you need assistance in completing this form please contact your child's school office or the District Office (916) 645-6350 and we can help!
