SHELDON MISSION STATEMENTS
In our last newsletter, I shared with you the give key areas that we call our Sheldon "fingerprint" or identity. These areas include equitable practices, leading with compassion, whole child learning, growth minded, shared leadership, and adult wellness. To make strides towards this, our staff determined our mission statements for instruction and the culture and climate of the school. These mission statements articulate things we are putting in place to strengthen our identity.

CULTURE & CLIMATE MISSION STATEMENT
As a Sheldon Shark staff, we are committed to cultivating a school culture and climate that fosters a safe and inclusive environment. We strive to model and teach students to
understand and practice empathy, kindness, responsibility, and develop a growth mindset along with gaining confidence as they grow and contribute to the school we love.
INSTRUCTION MISSION STATEMENT
Students believe they are a significant factor in their own success. They are independent learners who have a growth mindset, are self-motivated, and advocate for their own learning needs. Students work collaboratively and encourage others to master content. Students demonstrate critical thinking skills, problem solving, and can defend thinking. Students use organizational skills and work habits to reach their academic goals.
MEET THE SHARK TEAM
Meet Ms. Sanchez, Principal
What would the students be surprised to find out about you?
- I love playing on my Nintendo Switch when not at work. My two favorite games are Dreamlight Valley and Animal Crossing!
How do you show your school spirit?
- I show it by coming each day with excitement, passion, and support to our staff, students, and families.
What are your must-have smartphone apps?
- For families, I highly recommend the Bark app to monitor your students' phone. It give you alerts when harassing language is used in texts or social media platforms and if any explicit apps/content is being seen by your student.
If you were not working at a school, what would you be?
- Hmmm either an interior designer or a Disney social media influencer (if money wasn't an object).
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
- My bucket list location is Switzerland right now. I want to see the beauty of the Swiss Alps.
What’s your favorite memory from your school days as a student?
- Singing in class with my second grade teacher Ms. Young. I still remember some of the songs. They were silly and we sang them daily!
What is your favorite thing about working at Sheldon?
- Seeing students happy while learning and socially in their interactions with peers and staff. When they are happy, they are more likely to grow and thrive! Working alongside a superb staff that are so willing to put in the work to give our students what they need.
- FLY! I could travel the world without having to pay for expensive flights!
SEPTEMBER IS ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH!
Kinder and 1st Grade Attendance
Kindergarten and 1st grade classes often have absenteeism rates as high as those in high school. Many of these absences are excused, but they still add up to lost time in the classroom.
If children don’t show up for school regularly, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Preliminary data from a California study found that children who were chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of 3rd grade.
