In January
Equity and Inclusion Staff...
- Collaborated with ELD teachers to present on Talking Points to SWEL coaches.
- Hosted a FAFSA night for Spanish-speaking families.
- Coordinated the "Radical Self-Care 101" Workshop for Affinity Unite members, Cultural Family Advocates, Leaders of Color, and Teachers of Color Mentorship Program members.
- Applied for the MDE Grow Your Own Grant.
In February
The Equity and Inclusion Team...
- Hosted ActioNow to recognize and honor Black History Month with district students, families, and staff.
- Testified before the MN Senate Education Finance Committee on the Teachers of Color Act as part of District Day at the MN State Capital in St. Paul. To read more, click here.
- Led the VMSS Girls Leadership Group on a field trip to explore the African diaspora through dance and storytelling.
- Designed a Black History Month S'more newsletter to share with district staff. Click here to read it.
- Provided the "Self-Awareness for Intentional Interactions" Workshop for educators of color.
- Partnered with Esperanza United to provide a high school girls and boys support group at AVHS.
In March
Equity and Inclusion Staff...
- Presented the 2023-2026 Achievement and Integration Plan to the School Board for approval. View the board meeting, starting at 15:25.
- Celebrated Cultural Family Advocate Appreciation Week.
- Collaborated with AMAZEWorks to provide anti-bias education workshops to district staff. See the AMAZEWorks March Newsletter.
- Provided the workshop, "Intercultural Conflict and Communication Style" to staff of color.
- Participated in the University of MN Job Fair.
- Recognized Women's History Month with a display and collaborated with Teaching and Learning to provide resources for classroom teachers. Click here for one example.
One District, Many Voices
District 196 is excited to celebrate the many languages and cultures represented among our students and families with our "One District, Many Voices" event.
The event will feature activity booths and performances representing different cultural customs, languages and traditions for people of all ages. Attendees can also explore a landscape of flavor featuring foods from around the world. “One District, Many Voices” is organized by the district’s Equity and Inclusion Department in collaboration with District 196 high school students.
