Carson Kostiuk's Broncos of the Week
Carter Line was chosen as Bronco of the week because of a couple of great games on the basketball court where he had the hot hand hitting 3's, but also because he is a great student athlete that is a leader in the classroom as well as on the court. Carter plays sports with integrity and teamwork and plays for all of the right reasons. Congratulations Carter!
Parker Olson was chosen as Bronco of the week due to his work ethic, positive attitude, and being a great teammate and friend both on the ice and at FHS. Parker battles hard on the ice and is always working diligently in the classroom to make sure he is a top student in his classes. Parker greets everyone, is the first one to step up and help with anything needed, and is just a "great guy!"
Girls Basketball Gets First Win of Season
The girls basketball team headed to Deer River on Thursday, December 21st to take on the Warriors. The girls defeated Deer River for their first win of the season. The final score was 66-55. The Broncos were proud of how they played defensively in their man to man. The girls switched into a 2-3 in the end of the second half when they found themselves in foul trouble. They quickly switched back to man to man. Their shots were falling, and their confidence is on the upswing.
Cheznee Skrien had a big night for the Broncos scoring 20 points. Piper Tomczak also scored 16 points in the Bronco win. Overall, the girls were proud of their intensity playing defensive and they hope they can carry it on throughout the rest of the season.
The JV team also won 43-34. Jazzman Slifer has 13 points to lead the JV team.
The team has a long break over Christmas Break and does not play again until January 4th when they take Nashwauk-Keewatin at home. Tip off will be at 7:15pm for the varsity game and they are looking forward to it!
The girls also had a special practice last week where they invited the 3rd-4th grade girls team to practice with them. They went over ball handling, shooting, and defensive drills. The younger and the older girls had a blast and it was a highlight of the season for both teams!
Boys Basketball Loses in Close Game to Mesabi East
The boys basketball team took on Mesabi East in the FHS Gymnasium. The boys played a great game overall, probably their best of the season so far. Mesabi East was a good team and the Broncos battled the entire game.
The boys were proud of their defensive game and worked hard on their full court press, keeping them in the game. Hendrix Torgerson led the Broncos with 13 points, Landin Budris scored 12, Carter Line scored 5, and Kalan Kittelson had 4 points, and Lucas Hollis and Jared Slifer scored 2 points a piece to round out the scoring.
The boys head to Ely for a tournament over Christmas Break where they will play Cook County and will have another shot at Bigfork. The boys are looking forward to the tournament and getting some more wins under their belt before heading into the second half of the season.
Girls Hockey Plays Tough Games
The girls hockey players and coaches were all battling illness over the past week and had a few rough games. The girls lost to Fort Frances at home with a final score of 8-1. The lady Broncos then headed on a long road trip to Kenora the following Thursday. The girls lost to a tough Kenora team 14-0.
The girls have been working hard to regroup, rest up, recover from illnesses, and are looking forward to regrouping over Christmas Break and playing a home game on Thursday, December 28th against Moose Lake @ 7pm at Bronco Arena. The Broncos are looking for their first win of the season, and are optimistic that the Moose Lake matchup will go in their favor!
Boys Hockey Has Ups and Downs
The latest news for Bronco Boys Hockey is a blend of ups and downs. Last week's game against Moose Lake ended with a 3-2 victory with an exciting overtime win for the Broncos. Then, last Saturday, the boys continued on a positive swing with a win against Kittson County Central 5-1. The boys then faced off in a tough matchup where they unfortunately lost to a tough Duluth Marshall team with a final score of 8-2. The team is hopeful they can get back on track and head in a positive direction again as they begin the second half of their season.
The Broncos played in the Border Battle against Fort Frances on Friday, December 22nd at Bronco Arena. They Broncos tied the Muskies 2-2 in a great game with a packed arena. Cooper Crandall and Gage Wallander each scored a goal in the tie. The Broncos are looking forward to a rematch with the Muskies in February to see who will get to take the trophy home for the year!
KAPE Holds Christmas Party and Gift Exchange
Down in the KAPE room on the Wednesday before Winter Break, Mrs. Balaski and her KAPE kids had their annual Christmas party and gift exchange. The kids involved got to plan what they were going to do for the party the week prior, as a thank you for all of the work that they do to make KAPE successful. The group decided to have tacos for lunch, with cookies, and grape and red Kool-Aid mixed together for the beverage. They decided to play a gift exchange game while trading presents with one another. Christmas movies such as Santa Clause 1,2, and 3 were played in the room throughout the week and Christmas music could be heard down the hallway the day before break. One of the students brought donuts from Dunkin to share with the entire group and many brought other treats to share as well. During the gift exchange game people were competing to intensely to win the gifts. Cullen Erickson ended up the winner of the game! A great time was had by all involved!
A New Face in the FHS Library!
There's a new face in the FHS Library. Mrs. Hjelle took a new position in the school, which left the library position open. Lori Potter started in her new role this week, and Falls High Ink had a chance to check in with her to see how the fist week went.
Why did you decide to take this job?
I actually worked in the library after Mrs. Bates moved away. I liked the job and was asked if I’d be interested in it when Mrs. Hjelle took another position,
What are you looking forward to the most this year?
Getting to know more of the students and helping students pick out books.
What is the most challenging part of your role in the library?
Making sure all the books get returned and don’t get lost.
What is your favorite part of being in the library?
Seeing a variety of students throughout the day.
What is an interesting fact about you that the students don’t know?
I am a mom to three boys, I have two daughters- in-law, I have two grandsons and another grandchild due in June. I love to camp and I love fishing. The past 12 years I have been a basketball cheer advisor to some amazing girls.
MHS Hosts 4-6th Grade Dance
The MHS members and MHS leader Karla Line worked diligently to offer 4-6th grade students at FES a fun, safe, positive activity that also serves as one of their largest fundraisers. They hosted a dance at the FHS cafeteria that all 4-6th grade students were welcome to attend. Mrs. Line, along with MHS members chaperoned, ran the concession stand, sold tickets, and headed up the DJ booth. A great time was had by all and the fundraiser was a huge success for MHS, covering the cost of their annual sweatshirts and shirts for their members. Thanks to MHS!
