Masks Required on Buses and Inside Schools
State officials have given school districts the responsibility to determine COVID-19 mitigation strategies at the local level this school year. The 2021-22 COVID-19 Operational Plan for Families, Students and Visitors to Schools that was unanimously approved by our School Board on August 26 requires all students, staff and visitors in all District 196 buildings to wear a face mask indoors when the local transmission level is “substantial” or “high” as measured by the CDC transmission matrix. Currently, the transmission level in Dakota County is high, meaning face masks will be required in our schools to start the year, just as they are required to enter a growing number of businesses, government buildings and on all public transportation and airline flights.
Your partnership is critical to the success of our students. We expect students, staff and visitors to comply with the mask requirement, as outlined in Administrative Regulation 708.7, COVID-19 Masks, until the COVID-19 spread in Dakota County drops to the “moderate” level of transmission. Masks help reduce spread and give us the best opportunity to provide consistent in-person education all year. Just like last year, students will have opportunities for mask breaks during the day, such as at lunch or while outside. If parents and guardians are concerned about their child’s ability to safely wear a mask, they should refer back to Administrative Regulation 708.7 COVID-19 Masks.
Our district is committed to doing all we can to ensure students can continue learning in person this school year. This includes HEPA filters in all learning spaces, social distancing, recommending COVID-19 vaccinations for those who are eligible to receive them and requiring masks when the local transmission level is substantial or high.
Review and Update Emergency Information
If you haven’t already done so, please update your family’s information on record with the district by completing the online review in your Infinite Campus Parent portal account. This is the one time each year the district asks parents to complete the review to ensure schools have up-to-date contact information, emergency contacts, student health records and more. It is important for schools to have current information in order to be notified in case of emergency, changes in the school schedule and to receive regular communication from the schools and district.
All District 196 parents and guardians are encouraged to have an Infinite Campus Parent account of their own to stay involved in their child’s education, and to access end-of-term report cards, transcripts, attendance and other important information. Parents who do not have their own Infinite Campus Parent account can request an activation key from the office at their child’s school. For information on setting up an Infinite Campus Parent account and completing the online review, visit the Family Resources page on our district website.
We look forward to partnering with you to make 2021-22 a safe, fun and productive school year for all of our students and families.

SPORTS SCOREBOARD
VARSITY SPORTS
The Eastview Varsity Alpine Ski Team competed in the Section 6 state qualifying race at Buck Hill on Tuesday, February 8. On the girls side, junior Megan Young finished in 10th place overall, earning her a berth in the state alpine meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik next Wednesday, February 16. This will be Megan’s second consecutive year skiing in the state meet. As a team, the Lightning finished 9th out of 18 teams in the section. Junior Elsa Youngberg skied one of her best races of the year and finished in 32nd out of 101 total skiers. Senior Katelyn McClure (37th) and senior captain Ellen Heunisch (51st), both skiing in the final race of their careers, each put down two solid runs. Sophomore Elara Egner finished in 60th place, and junior Hayley Struthers finished in 80th place.
The Lightning boys finished in 13th place, with junior captain Noah Rolling leading the way in 48th place out of 102 skiers. Eighth grader Owen Schultz came in next for the Lightning in 55th place, followed by sophomore Riley Smith (65th), sophomore Zach Kier (71st), junior Finn Ward (76th), and eighth grader Simon Gruman (82nd). To the delight of his teammates, Gruman eschewed the traditional race suit and instead skied the course in a short-sleeve t-shirt.
2/12: Eastview Varsity Hockey traveled to Lakeville North on Saturday losing a hard fought battle 5-2. Neither team was able to score in the first period as scoring chances were hard to find. Eastview opened up the scoring in a strong 2nd period with a short-handed goal. Jordan Brothers blocked a Lakeville North shot at took the puck up ice and made an outstanding pass to Zach Wooten at the attacking blue line. Wooten skated in and made a great shot into the upper right corner. Later in the period, Eastview scored again on the power play to make it 2-0 Lightning. Brothers scored with assists going to Brothers and Jordan Larkee.
North picked up their pace in the 3rd period scoring a couple quick goals early in the period. Eastview had a couple scoring chances and then North netted two more goals to go up 4-2. The lightning put some pressure on late in the game with the goalie pulled, but were unable to score again. North then added an empty net goal in the final minute to make it a 5-2 final. Eastview returns to action on Tuesday night against cross town rival Apple Valley.
Lightning Boys Hockey v. Rosemount, Tues., Feb. 8
The Lightning Boys skated to a big 7-4 win on Tuesday against crosstown rival Rosemount, lifting their record to 13-8 and making a strong statement for section 3 playoff seeding.
Rosemount opened the scoring just two minutes in on a deflection from a point shot but the Lightning responded quickly with a snipe by Jordan Brothers just three minutes later. Assists went to Charlie Ortman and Tanner Kronberg as Brothers showed nice patience moving into a shooting lane near the right dot and sending a hard shot past the goalie. Walker Bergland’s marker just four minutes later brought the first lightning lead. Assists from Tyler Cords and Logan Opgrand sent Bergland streaking down the left side before a precision shot that surprised the Irish goalkeeper. The Lightning lead would last less than three minutes as the Irish closed out the first period scoring with a power play goal for a 2-2 tie. The Lightning were outshot for the period 16-9 as goalie Jay Svaren was strong, yielding both goals on deflections.
As with the opening period, Rosemount scored an early goal to retake the lead as an Irish forward squeezed past the Lightning defense. It took the Lightning little over a minute to respond as Zach Wooten tied the score at three off of the rush. Assists went to John Kisch who made a sweet saucer pass from the right wing wall and Jordan Larkee. The game was tied but the Lightning started to take control halfway through the period, including a sequence with extended zone time and several near lightning strikes. The Lightning’s hard work was finally rewarded as Bergland scored his second goal with 30 seconds left in the period on a hustle at the goal mouth when jamming a rebound behind the Irish net minder. Bergland’s goal was assisted by Brothers and Gabe Tritschler and allowed the Lightning to take a lead into the locker room that they would not relinquish. Eastview outshot Rosemount 18-13 for the period.
Senior Capt. Gabe Tritschler opened the scoring in the third with a great individual effort after gathering a loose puck in the neutral and streaking down the right side before launching a rocket past the Rosemount goalie. The Irish were not done and scored less than a minute later to narrow the Eastview lead to one. Brothers’ second goal followed quickly as the Lightning once again opened a two goal lead. Halfway through the period, the physical game took a nasty turn as Rosemount was assessed a major penalty for boarding, followed by a slashing minor that provided a full two minutes of five on three for the lightning. The boys power play struggles continued as they were unable to score on this extended power play opportunity. The Irish pressed hard in the games final minutes but the lightning defense and net minder Svaren were strong and Larkee closed out the scoring with an empty net goal. Assists went to Wooten and Tritschler. Rosemount outshot Eastview 40-33 for the game.
The boys crucial victory against Rosemount was an important confidence booster that also carries significant implications for section seeding. The victory was particularly sweet for the Seniors who reveled in their first varsity victory against the Irish. The week of February 14 will conclude the regular season with matchups against Apple Valley, Lakeville South and Shakopee on Tues/Thurs/Sat., the latter being Senior Day at Apple Valley Sports Arena. Go Lightning!
Boys Swim and Dive Competes Against Rosemount High School
On Tuesday, February 8 Lightning swimmers and divers took to the pool for their final meet of their regular season to battle the Rosemount Irish. Rosemount won this meet, but not without facing the skill and determination of our Eastview athletes. This determination was especially evident from Lightning sprinters. In the varsity 50 Yard Freestyle, Nick Phomsouvanh achieved a decisive 1st place victory, followed by a 2nd place finish from teammate Hank Stanton; Devin Jackson pushed ahead to a 2nd place finish in the junior varsity race. Another 1st place for the Lightning went to Alex Schmidt in the varsity 100 Yard Freestyle. Phomsouvanh, Schmidt, and Stanton were joined by Trevor Larkee in the varsity 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, where they worked together to grab another 1st place finish for the team. The varsity 400 Yard Freestyle relay team came out on top as well, with Alex Schmidt, Trevor Larkee, Jackson Fox, and Will Jerome taking 1st place in the event. Additional team relay and individual highlights include:
Varsity 200 Yard Medley Relay: 2nd

Swimmers and divers now have their minds focused on training for Section 3AA competition, held February 23-25. Eastview athletes will strive to show that hard work, determination, and teamwork will bring out the best in themselves in and out of the pool. Their teammates, family, and friends will keep cheering them on as they work to achieve their end of season goals. Go, Lightning!
Boys Swim and Dive Faces Off Against the Farmington Tigers
On Friday, February 4th Lightning swimmers and divers took to the pool for their eighth meet of the season to challenge the Farmington Tigers. This meet was full of exciting events, with many close match-ups between competitors. One of these match-ups occurred during the junior varsity Individual Medley. Jakob Linscheid stayed right with his competition during each lap, making a final push at the end to pull ahead and take 1st place by just under one second. Another dynamic race was the varsity 50 Yard Freestyle, as Nick Phomsouvanh sprinted to a 1st place finish with a Tiger following only 0.03 seconds behind! Diving had a close match-up for the top two spots, but Isaac Field rose above his competition, taking 1st place by just over five points. Alex Schmidt gathered points for the Lighting while distancing himself from the competition, easily taking 1st place in the varsity 100 and 200 Yard Freestyle events. Throughout the night, the winning scores between the teams shifted between the Lightning and the Tigers, with the final score riding on the last race, the Varsity 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The Tigers pulled ahead in this last event, with the final score of Eastview 87 and Farmington 99. Team and individual highlights from this meet include:

JV SPORTS
2/12/22 - Eastview JV Boys hockey drops a tight contest to Lakeville North
It was a very even first period with the Lightning scoring first with 7:11 left in period 1. Owen Iikubo #13 scored on a wrist shot from the point with the assists going to Parker Cameron #36 and Abram Johnson #33. The Panthers tied the game up just 2 minutes later with 5:14 left in the period and took a 2-1 lead less than a minute after that. Eastview wasted no time tying the game up just 11 seconds after that with 4:31 remaining in period 1. Jaymeson Zachery #37 knocked in a loose puck with assists from Caleb Nelson #20 and Ethan Hansen #15. Shots for the first frame were 8 to 6 in favor of Lakeville North.
The teams traded goals late in the second period. Lakeville North scored on a break away with 1:20 left in period 2, after a player got loose from the penalty box after a Lightning power play expired. Not to be outdone, Eastview scored a short-handed goal with just 2 seconds left when Sean Kalthoff #34 got one past the Lakeville goalie with a solid forecheck, unassisted. Shots were 9 to 6 for the period in favor of the Panthers, for a 2-period total of 17 to 12, also is favor of the Panthers.
The Panthers took a 4-3 lead with 8:38 left in the game on a rebound goal. Lakeville North took a 5-3 lead with 3:58 remaining on a power play goal, as they Lightning ended the game short-handed after taking a 5:00 minute major penalty with just over 4 ½ minutes to go. There was no quitting for the Lightning, who continued to fight and scored a short-handed goal with 3:35 left to play on a goal by Parker Cameron #36, a lone assist going to Caleb Nelson #20, to make the final score 5-4 for the Panthers. Shots in the third period were 7 to 6 for the Panthers, for a game total of 24-18 in favor of Lakeville North.
It was a solid night in goal for goalie Kaden Goff #1, who stopped 19 of the 24 shots he faced. The Lightning fall to a respectable 14-8-3 on the season and are back on the ice Tuesday evening February 15th against their crosstown rival Apple Valley Eagles.
2/8/2022 - Eastview Boys JV Hockey Team Falls to Irish
In spite of their last matchup against Rosemount ending in a 2 - 2 OT tie, the Lightning struggled to compete with the Irish on the ice last week. Eastview goalie Blake Jensen was very nimble in net and made several key saves during the first period. With just 18 seconds left in one of their first period penalty kills and with Jensen covering the net strong on his right, Rosemount tapped one in Jensen’s left and took the early lead with 6:10 left in the first period. Eastview let Rosemount have too much presence in front of the net, and the Irish tapped another one in to take a 2-0 lead near the end of the second. Rosemount finished the first period with 21 shots on goal; Eastview only had 6.
Eastview started off on the wrong foot in the second period and was assessed a 5 minute major plus 10 minute misconduct penalty just 34 seconds into the second. Rosemount took advantage of the five minute major and went ahead quickly 3 - 0. With only 45 seconds left on the five minute major, Rosemount scored again taking the lead 4 -0. At the end of the penalty, Rosemount had an additional three goals against the Lightning and finished the period in a 6 - 0 lead. With Eastview in a constant defensive position, Rosemount outshot Eastview through the end of the second with 45 shots on goal to Eastview's 9. Eastview was in penalty trouble throughout the second and ended the period with four players in the box. Eastview had too many penalties throughout the game and had standing room only in the penalty box during both the second and third periods.
Finally, with 4:24 left in the third Eastview defender Owen Ikubo scored the lone Lightning goal of the game with a sweet shot from the point. Ikubo was assisted by Caleb Nelson, and was the only Eastview player to put the Lightning on the board. One of the highlights of the game was Jensen's play between the pipes where he faced 55 shots on goal and made 49 saves. Final score was 6 to 1 Rosemount, and shots goal were 55 to 19 in favor of the Irish.

CLUB SPORTS
HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY
Rugby registration is open for our Girls and Boys high school teams.
Our Varsity Boys are looking to defend their State Championship, and are ranked 31st in the Nation in pre-season rankings. Our Varsity Girls program is up and coming, and we expect to challenge at the top in Minnesota this year in building up to our 2023 Scotland Tour.
WE NEED PLAYERS. No experience is necessary. We have many holes to fill and first-year players will get significant playing/starting time. In rugby, everybody plays, everybody carries the ball, and everybody tackles. Rugby suits all body shapes and sizes, and teaches explosiveness, decision-making, and agility. Rugby is the only spring sport that teaches safe and highly effective tackling to improve HS football player performance and to help avoid injury. We are an ISD 196 club sport, meaning Varsity players may earn their letter.
Practice begins on March 6th and the season runs through the end of the school year. More information, including registration links, may be found at https://www.eaasports.org/rugby.

New: Mock Trial Goes For Regional Championship
Eastview Mock Trial Blue team beat St. Thomas Academy on split ballots Tuesday, February 8, and will compete on the Defense side against Visitation School next Tuesday for the Regional Championship. The winner will advance to the State Tournament run by the Minnesota State Bar Association in March.
Against St. Thomas in Regional Round 4, Eastview’s Prosecution side sent the Defendant to (mock) prison for swindling money from the dog rescue charity. Senior Captain Elie Tate and Junior Ian Machalek (as the State’s lead fraud investigator) earned awards for “Best Attorney” and “Best Witness,” respectively. Teammates Raavi Singh, Momo Lee, Shruti Chandrasekar, Kelly Diep, Sigrid Froehlig, Anna Singh, Finn Boffeli, Kristine Joseph and Breanna Price all contributed to the win.
In Round 3 on January 25, Eastview defeated Nova Classical Academy. Elie Tate was named “Best Witness” for her portrayal of an expert financial crimes witness for the Defense. Junior Captain Sigrid Froehlig was named “Best Attorney,” as the team successfully represented Defendant Finn Boffeli against (mock) fraud charges for the dog rescue charity he made his life’s work.
The Eastview White team wrapped up its competition season in Regional Round 4 on the Defense side, defeating Parnassus Academy by a razor-thin 2-point margin. Sneha Narra was awarded “Best Attorney,” and Neha Ravella “Best Witness” for her portrayal of the clearly innocent pet rescue owner. In Round 3, Eastview White dropped a tight round representing the State of Minnesota against then #2 seeded Hill-Murray. J.P. Sacta-Espinosa, portraying the dog-loving donor who was swindled of his money, was named “Best Witness.” Neha Ravella was named “Best Attorney.”
Eastview White finishes its season ranked #12 of 30 teams in the Region. Other team members are Lily Boyd, Bhavyha Sharabu, Nandini Ghadge, Ahloa Carruthers-Delong, Avabelle Harloff, Charlotte Pomroy and Jordan Sparby.
