Student Spotlight
Congratulations to Gwyneth B and Sophia M for completing a level in Lexia. Great job persevering and reading girls!
Once Kassie realized how to earn a prize out of the library treasure chest she was a quizzing machine!
Literacy Moment
Children need to have access to a plethora of books. Kelly Gallagher states in his book Readicide that in order for children to develop strong reading habits, "they must be immersed in a book flood" (Gallagher, p.34). Take advantage of our local Redding Library and the Stellar Library. There are also fabulous online audio book programs such as Epic. Our hope is that students become prolific readers for life.
Literacy Note:
Did you know reading helps your brain develop? Reading allows new circuits and connections to be created. As reading skills develop, the connections in the brain become more complex. Try implementing a nightly reading routine to encourage your child to read or listen to a story. Make reading a relaxing activity and enjoy snuggling up with a good book this chilly fall season!
Free program for special needs children and their families offered by Turtle Bay Exploration Park.
This is a big literacy event in our county on January 8th, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. That evening there will be an opportunity for parents and community members to come and hear from a distinguished speaker and literacy advocate, Kareem Weaver.
FRI., DEC 8 @ 8:30 AM PST
Lauren Tarshis is returning to Storyvoice for an epic read-aloud of her graphic novel, I Survived: The American Revolution, 1776! Nathaniel Fox never imagined he’d find himself in the middle of a blood-soaked battlefield, fighting for his life. He was only eleven years old! But he was suddenly propelled toward a thrilling and dangerous journey into the heart of the Revolutionary War, on the brink of what will be the biggest battle yet. Students will get to meet Lauren, read along, and ask questions! Students can find I Survived: The American Revolution, 1776 at their Scholastic Book Fair or in the Scholastic Book Clubs flyers!
FRI., DEC 8 @ 11:00 AM PST
Gordon Korman is coming to Storyvoice for a read-aloud of his new book, Mixed Up! Reef and Theo don’t know what’s happening to them. They’ll be going about their days and then suddenly they’ll have these strange flashes of memory—but the memories don’t belong to them. And at the same time, their own memories are starting to…vanish. Students will get to meet Gordon, read along, and ask questions! Students can find Mixed Up at their Scholastic Book Fair!
Dear Families:
Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them on their journey to becoming lifelong readers. AND—as always—every purchase at the Fair benefits our school.
Here’s what you need to know about the big event, which will take place: Dec 11-15th in the Library ~ Room #7 Monday-Thursday hours are 8:00-8:30am & 12:30pm-3:30pm. Friday hours are 9:00am-1:00pm.
Say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Book Fair online. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Every online purchase will also benefit our school.
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/stellarcharterschool1
The countdown to more Bookjoy is on! Catch you at the Fair!
Happy reading,
