Attendance Snapshot - Still Showing Improvement in '23-'24
Students & Parents,
I am so thankful to see better numbers when evaluating attendance data for the Fall semester. As I have previously stated in other newsletters, we believe there is a direct correlation between attendance and grades. One of the ideas our leadership team suggested at the end of the '22-'23 school year regarding how to improve attendance at DCHS was incentivizing students with good attendance. The leadership team decided this first year to focus only on unexcused absences. A student would be eligible to exempt their final exams by meeting one of the following criteria in each of their four classes.
Option 1: If a student had zero unexcused absences for the semester and were passing the course, they were eligible for exemption.
Option 2: If a student had no more than two unexcused absences and making a 90 or above for the course, they were eligible for exemption.
In total, 289 students were able to exempt at lease one final exam. (9th - 78, 10th - 89, 11th - 61, 12th - 61) Courses that require an end-of-course test such as Algebra, Biology, US History and American Literature were not eligible for exemption. Obviously, this was our first attempt at rewarding students for attendance and grades. We are looking at ways to improve this for the '24-'25 school year already.
Academic Excellence at DCHS
In December, three students were recognized for academic excellence at the regular schedule school board meeting. Twenty-three DCHS students recently competed at the State BETA Convention in Savannah, Georgia. Mrs. Ashley Harrison, a DCHS Economics teacher, and Jessica Wilson, a drama teacher at DMS and DCHS, chaperoned and guided these students as they competed in several events against other top students in the state. Pictured below are three of our students who placed in the top four in their category. Thank you to Mr. Ingle, members of our School Board, Phil Bell and Carrie Morris (bus drivers), Ashley Harrison, Jessica Wilson and parents for believing in our students. Trips like this allow us to live out what our DCHS school logo states "Seeing Beyond the Mountains".

Friday, January 12th, at our Winter Pep Rally, our student section will be recognized as the Best Student Section in Classes 1A - 5A. Way to go Wolverines!!
