LISD School Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
This has been a big week for LISD. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the LISD Town Hall last night. I appreciated seeing all your familiar faces there to support our schools and to become informed about the details of our financial challenges. Transparency is important so we will find ways to keep our community updated through our newsletter, Parent Square messages, and/or additional town hall gatherings. In addition, there is always a financial report at monthly school board meetings, and you are welcome to attend.
Right before the town hall meeting, many parents, students, staff, and community members gathered in the gym to watch our girls basketball team beat Shoreline Christian in their first district championship game. These two events in one evening filled my heart with joy and appreciation as I witnessed so much community support of our school and our students.
Today was a schoolwide celebration of character. We had our secondary character awards ceremony for term 2 in the gym during advisory. Many students received awards from teachers for demonstrating BELONGING, KINDNESS, OWNERSHIP, and PERSEVERANCE in lots of different ways. In elementary, we gathered in the multi-purpose room right before dismissal to celebrate birthdays, character stars for individual students, lunchtime apple awards for classes, and January's featured character habit...BELONGING.
What a great week! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
All my best,
Martha
Coach Berg Honored at Charles Wright Academy
Coach Berg was a teacher and coach at Charles Wright Academy before coming to Lopez Island School in the fall of 2003.
On January 27, 2024 in Tacoma, WA, Coach Larry Berg received the honor of being inducted into the Charles Wright Academy Athletic Hall of Fame for his outstanding coaching of the high school basketball and football teams at Charles Wright Academy from 1988-2003. He was the first coach in the history of the school to take a CWA basketball team to the State Tournament and then repeated this for the next four out of five years. His football teams’ accomplishments included playing for the 1989 Class A State Football Championship, as well as multiple league championships and numerous post season playoffs.
The event not only highlighted the accomplishments, but also recognized and applauded Coach Berg’s positive impact and influence on his players, students, coaching staff, and the school.

Seeking Plants & Pots!
We have started our planning for the LIFE Garden’s annual Mother’s Day weekend plant sale. We need your help! We are collecting garden pots to start seedlings in. We also are asking gardeners to plant a few extra seedlings or divide your perennials to donate to our sale. If you would like to volunteer at the sale, please contact Sara Jones (sjones@lopezislandschool.org).
Check us out on Instagram @lifeonlopez where you can see some of the SAP students’ current projects.
Huckleberry loves his nice cozy spot among the lost and found pile in the elementary building -- but perhaps you might like your child's coat or sweater back home? Please come take a look when you can.
