WHITNEY ELEMENTARY’S “POETRY SHOW”
Every Friday, the first graders at Whitney Elementary have a "Poetry Show." This is an opportunity for students to practice their reading fluency and reading expression. Every week the first graders receive a new poem, which they practice as a class. This poem then goes into their poetry binder. On Friday, each student chooses one poem from their binder they would like to showcase and read aloud to their classmates. The Poetry Show helps reinforce two of the PRIDE pillars - students show PRIDE by being both Engaged and Respectful of their classmates as they're presenting the poetry.
COLLEGE CREDIT PLUS - VIRTUAL MEETING (WED. 2/1)
The College Credit Plus informational meeting for the 2023-2024 school year will be held virtually on Wednesday, February 1 at 6:00pm. The meeting link will be communicated in the next few weeks, via the Strongsville High School main page of the website. The Intent to Participate form will also be found online and will be due no later than April 1, 2023.
MUSTANG SPOTLIGHT - MRS. BECKY APPLEGATE, AIDE AT EARLY LEARNING PRESCHOOL
Mrs. Becky Applegate has been an Aide at our Early Learning Preschool for 12 years. A graduate of Strongsville High School, Mrs. Applegate earned her undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University. She and her husband (also an SHS graduate) live in our community and have two daughters.
“I love working with the preschool students because every day is an adventure! It's amazing to see them learning and growing so much. We celebrate all that our students accomplish and encourage them when they might be struggling. We have a wonderful staff at the preschool and we truly are a great team. I've been very lucky to work with such a great group of coworkers during my years at the preschool,” said Mrs. Applegate.

SCS STATE OF THE SCHOOLS PRESENTATION - WED. MARCH 1 AT 6PM
The annual “State of the Schools” presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, March 1st at 6:00pm. This year’s event will be held at Strongsville Middle School and will also be livestreamed on SCS-TV. We look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of our District and all that makes Strongsville City Schools special. NASA ASTROPHYSICIST VISITS SMS
This week, NASA Glenn Research Center Astrophysicist Jeff Woytach visited Strongsville Middle School. Mr. Woytach spoke to our 6th grade honors students, who have been reading the book "Bomb: The Race to Build―and Steal--the World's Most Dangerous Weapon" and learning about the history of the atomic bomb. He detailed the history of the development of nuclear energy and how this has also led to discoveries and space exploration projects.
GIRLS YOUTH STRONGSVILLE GOLF CAMP
Join Strongsville High School Golf Team coaches and varsity golf players at the Girls Youth Strongsville Golf Camp! The camp is open to girls in 4th - 8th grades and focuses on developing the proper techniques in the golf swing, as well as improving skills for the short game and putting. The camp fee is $100 and will be held once a week in April and May from 6pm - 7pm at Valleaire Golf Club (6969 Boston Rd. / Hinckley). SMS ROCKS! - MARDI GRAS DANCE (FRI. FEB. 24)
On Friday, February 24th, “SMS Rocks!” celebrates all things good with a Mardi Gras Masquerade Color Party! This dance for 6th-8th graders includes a friendly event attendance competition for a reward! Students should wear the following colors for their grade level - prizes will be awarded for the highest attending grade: 6th grade / purple; 7th grade / gold or yellow; 8th grade / green. SMS will be transported to New Orleans with festive decor, $1 snacks, eye masks for sale ($1 or $2), games, & henna hand art (free) - plus rockin’ tunes and prizes! All proceeds from SMS Rocks goes to Council PTA’s SHS Scholarships and SCS Grants. Purchase your tickets in advance ($12) online or during lunch periods on the following dates - 1/31, 2/1, 2/15, 2/16, 2/21. Kiwanis “Read Around the World” Event (Sat. 2/25)
The Kiwanis Club of Strongsville is hosting their annual “Read Around The World” event on Saturday, February 25th at Strongsville Library. This FREE event runs from 10:00am - 12:30pm. The program is intended for preschool through 2nd graders. Activities include short skits, puppet shows, face painting, and refreshments. Each child attending will have the opportunity to select and take home a children’s book.

Kulture Kids: Pushing Up the Sky. Ages 3-10 with Families. Saturday, February 11th / 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Come in for an afternoon in which Kulture Kids will present this Native American legend. The birds, animals and Native people boast, brag and call each other names. Can they learn to work together to solve a problem of a sky that is too low to the ground? Join in the telling of this Native American legend by becoming these creatures, singing and speaking the Mohawk language.
Computer Classes IN PERSON. Cuyahoga County Public Library offers computer classes for beginners to advanced. Classes are currently being held in-person as well as some VIRTUALLY which requires a web browser and an internet connection. There is no additional software to download. Google Chrome is the recommended browser. A valid email address is required for registration. Registrants will receive an email with a link to join the class at least an hour before the start time. The Strongsville Branch Library is home to both Audio and Video Recording studios that can help you do just that! You must go through an orientation to use the spaces.
