BSC Weekly Newsletter
Week of September 11th
Greetings from Mrs. Chun
Dear Balboa Families,
Happy New School Year, Balboa Families! And a very special and warm welcome to our new families this year. I hope the start of the school year has been nothing but amazing for your scholar. It has been a privilege and honor leading this incredible school for the past 5 years. Balboa Magnet is a recent recipient of the 2021 National Blue Ribbon and 2022 California Distinguished School Award. These great achievements are due to the dedicated staff, talented scholars and supportive families like yours!
We encourage all of our families to be involved, whether it’s in the classroom, TAP program, or BSC committees. We know parents are busy, but you are always welcome to get involved and volunteer in some capacity. Please make sure you complete a volunteer application ASAP if you have not done so already as it can take some time. For more information, please reach out to our wonderful Parent Community Representative, Mrs. Lisa Henderson at lisa.henderson@lausd.net.
On behalf of the teachers and staff, I thank you for your generous donations that allow us to offer an accelerated academic program to prepare our scholars as 21st century learners. Your generous Compass Fund donations allow us to offer vocal music class, hands on science and engineering lab instructor, coding and programming teacher, and more! I look forward partnering with every family to ensure the best learning opportunities are provided for every scholar this school year. Here’s to an excellent school year ahead!
With gratitude,
Mrs. Chun

How far we've come!
THANK YOU to all our Balboa families who have donated to the Compass Fund! Thanks to your generosity, we are a quarter of the way toward our goal! We only have a few short weeks remaining in our Compass Fund and every contribution counts! If you have not, please make your tax-deductible donation TODAY! Remember, many employers will match your donation. Check with your supervisor or Human Resources department and see about making your contribution go even further! Matching gifts are accepted year-round.
Remember: First class to 100% participation will receive a CLASS PARTY! Will your class be the one? Where does your class stand? Check out the standings listed on the right to find out! While we suggest a $500 donation per student, every dollar amount is greatly appreciated and will bring us closer to our goal. Make your donation today!
Balboa's Enrichment Programs
To learn more about Balboa's Enrichment programs, please visit our new LAUSD website: https://balboamagnet.lausd.org/:
Balboa is fortunate to have many, varied enrichment activities for our students. These activities support and enhance our curriculum. Students in all grade levels have the opportunity to participate in developmentally appropriate technology projects, videoconferencing experiences, and a structured physical education program. They are also involved in music education programs, both vocal and instrumental, the LAUSD Arts Prototype Program, and visits to our library and gardens. We continue to watch our students thrive with the additional enrichment programs and activities Balboa has to offer.
LEVEL UP: Donation Perks
Did you know your donation comes with perks? If you donate $350 your scholar will get to participate in a virtual Balboa Bingo and receive Balboa swag! At $500, your scholar will receive all the perks for the $350 level AND attend an afternoon movie screening! A donation of $1000 comes with all the perviously mentioned perks plus four tickets to the End-of-Year Dance, lunch with Mrs. Chun, and standard Yearbook! Let's LEVEL UP!!!
Volunteer for Psychomotor!
Would you like to have some fun with our scholars while supporting our teachers? Consider being a volunteer for psychomotor!
If you are an LAUSD cleared volunteer, please consider signing up with your Room Parent(s) to volunteer for psychomotor. Psychomotor is one of Balboa's enrichment programs where volunteers accompany their class outside for approximately 30 minutes, while they play a sport designated by our physical education coach. Psychomotor is a wonderful opportunity for our scholars to learn to play different sports, develop good sportsmanship qualities, and get their bodies moving! During psychomotor, teachers attend grade-level meetings which allow them to synchronize their teaching and ensure all classes are performing and learning at the same level. If you would like to learn more about volunteering for psychomotor please reach out to your class' Room Parent or Rana Sharif, our Room Parent coordinator at balboacommunications@gmail.com.
