Board Highlights (just the facts)

At the November 25 regular board meeting:

2020 Tax Levy Certification – At last night’s meeting, the Board set our 2020 local levy rate at $2.15 per $1,000 of assessed property value. This is something they do each year in November, but this year presented challenges due to the state’s recent changes to its taxing model.

While the Board has the ability to raise the local levy to $2.50, they opted to balance the local levy rate with the state's current tax rate for a total that matches what our voters approved in 2017.

Board members noted that a lot of thought and community feedback went into making this decision. "We have to be good stewards of the taxpayer's money," commented board member Tracey Malone.

"We are living within the new funding rules. This decision prioritizes serving our students and staff while honoring what our taxpayers have already approved," commented board member Connie Hennessey.

Mill Town Pride Awards

2019 Class 4A State Cross Country Champions

Say congrats our newest state champions: The CHS Boys Cross Country Team! Members present were Carson Frawley, Sam Geiger, Connor Hayward, Mitchell Hayward, Evan Jenkins, Craig Porter, Spencer Twyman, Luc Utheza, and Austin Weese. Coaches were Laurie Porter, Matt LeGrand, and Andrew Kaler.

Congratulations to Grass Valley Elementary teacher Natalie Wilson, who has been named to the 2020 Class of the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame! She will be honored at WMEA’s gala in February alongside nine fellow inductees recognized for exceptional support, inspiration and outstanding contribution to the growth and development of music education, both public and private, in the state of Washington.

Giving Socks and Giving Back

At Odyssey Middle School & Discovery High School, students and staff are always looking for innovative ways to GROW, GIVE, and PARTICIPATE in the world around them. In that spirit, Odyssey Discovery PTO has embarked on its Sock Campaign, where every purchase makes two lasting benefits. Here's how:

1) Buy a 3-Pack of Socks – Each purchase raises money for the project-based learning campus. They'll make great stocking stuffers and gifts this holiday season.

Hayes and Baller Buddies

Amanda Jackson's Hayes Freedom High School Spanish students have been stopping by Amy Wing's Helen Baller Elementary Kindergarten class to teach some basic Spanish. Here they are working on "Me llamo ___________," which is "My name is...."

Spreading Joy and Treats for Staff at Grass Valley

She's at it again! Grass Valley Elementary teacher Sheryl Obegi (pictured left) is spreading kindness to everyone. Mrs. Obegi roams the halls during recess to find hungry colleagues, wheeling around her Snack Wagon – which just received a surprise lighting and sprinkles upgrade from her third-grade team. This snack-filled sensation is her passion project –– and totally free to her fellow Zebra staff. Says one GVE fan, "She is amazing!!"

Woodburn Urban Warriors

Fifth graders (Grant, Cole, Clark, and David) from Woodburn Elementary School helped kick off the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s new event, the MDA Urban Warrior, on Wednesday's broadcast of Good Day Oregon! They will be competing as a relay team in January to honor Woodburn's recently retired student services coordinator, Anna Smith, who has muscular dystrophy, as well as friends who have the neuromuscular disease.

DECA's Annual Coffee Fundraiser

Happy Holidays from Camas DECA, a business and marketing club at CHS! Students will be selling bags of coffee that feature four winning student-designed labels. Sales are open to families and community members from Fri., Nov. 22, through Thurs., Dec. 5, for $10 per bag. Every purchase raises funds for important local projects – and will give one student team bragging rights for selling the most bags!
