VIRTUAL POSTSECONDARY READINESS EXPO October 4 - 15, 2021
To prepare DCSD students for postsecondary success, DCSD’s Postsecondary Readiness Department is hosting a Virtual Postsecondary Readiness Expo for all DCSD students. Students will have the opportunity to visit virtually with representatives within specific industries or fields to learn about career pathways and postsecondary options.
Virtual presentations with industry professionals from specific pathways will be scheduled with CTE Teachers to provide access for students while in class. Times and links to these sessions will be located in the “Industry Presentations” tab on the Expo.

Upcoming Virtual Financial Aid & Literacy Events!
Again, this year, Lesa Briggs with K-12 Outreach and Financial Literacy Wellness at CU Denver wants to continue to support high school counselors, students and their parents as they begin the admission and financial aid processes. To ensure you are getting the right answers to your financial aid and FAFSA questions, please plan to attend one of the upcoming Virtual Financial Aid & Literacy events. These workshop events are very informative and will be focused on helping with completing the FAFSA application and with navigating the financial aid office process and requirements.
Counselors: The 2022-23 FAFSA will be available on and after October 1 at https://studentaid.gov for your current high school seniors. Please share this link and the upcoming events with your students and parents. Students (and parents) in all stages of the financial aid process will benefit and are welcome to attend.

The Boettcher Foundation is hosting webinars on “Everything You Need to Know About Scholarships.” During these webinars we will go over how students can “ACE” their college and scholarship applications, including tips on how to make their applications stand out. You can register to attend one of the webinars by clicking on the link below and selecting the date you wish to attend*:

Awesome Opportunity for Seniors To Take a Class on Campus at Arapahoe Community College’s Sturm Campus for 2nd Semester!
Eligibility:
You must be a senior.
You must be on track to graduate.
You must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.
The course must work with your schedule.
You must be interested in pursuing ONE of four ACC Pathways: Technology, Health, Math/Science, Business.
You can only take ONE class.
You must select the course from the identified Pathway.
Some courses do have additional prerequisites - see Pathway form or ask your counselor.
Application deadline is October 6th.

Daniels Scholarship
We are excited to announce that the online application for the Daniels Scholarship Program will be open from Thursday, October 1 to Sunday, November 15, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. MST!
The Daniels Scholarship Program provides the opportunity for highly motivated students to earn a bachelor’s degree that helps them build a successful career and rewarding life. Daniels Scholars demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, and a commitment to serving their communities. Bill Daniels would also want his scholars to be proud Americans who value our free enterprise system and are prepared to give the world their very best shot.
The Daniels Scholarship Program offers a four-year college scholarship that provides financial and personal support focused on helping Daniels Scholars succeed in college, and in life. The scholarship is unique to each student and varies depending on their Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and their choice of school. The scholarship pays up to $25,000 per year toward the student’s unmet need, after applying their EFC, other scholarships, and financial aid. Daniels Scholars may attend any accredited college or university in the United States.
Below is a list of eligibility requirements:
- Be a graduating high school senior in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, or Wyoming.
- Be a resident of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, or Wyoming.
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
- Earn a minimum 3.0 high school GPA (on an unweighted 4.0 scale)
- Earn a minimum SAT Math score of 490 and a minimum Evidence-Based Reading & Writing score of 490, or a minimum ACT score of 18 in each category (writing score not required). All scores must come from a single test. Super scoring is not accepted.
- The applicant’s parent(s) or legal guardian(s) must have an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $85,000 or less on the 2020 tax return on which the applicant appears. For claimed dependents beyond the applicant, there is an allowance for an additional $5,000 for each dependent or $15,000 for each additional dependent in college full-time.

Journaling with Jenny (Virtual)
Tuesday, September 21 3:30pm to 5pm Prepare For A New Day by journaling emotions, thoughts, and future plans online with our clinician, Jenny Robbins, LPCC. The benefits of writing and journaling can help with symptoms of trauma, grief, depression, and anxiety. Researchers found that there is an increase in overall self-care from writing.

Embrace Where You Are through our upcoming gentle yoga series.
In these classes: You will focus on slowing down any mental activity, bring ease to the breath, and tune into the nervous system’s vast healing capacity.

Youth Congress

Students, grades 9 – 12, are invited to attend Youth Congress, on October 25th, 2021, 9AM – 1PM, at The Highlands Ranch Mansion. This year, we will have space for #60 youth. Reserve your spot today!
What is Youth Congress?
It’s an event where adult leaders work with youth on issues that affect the lives of Douglas County youth. Short video: https://youtu.be/F_cniE5oJMg
Requirements and considerations for youth participation:
- Must be in the 9th-12th grade living in Douglas County
- Parent/guardian permission required to attend
- Name, age, school, contact phone, and email for participant and parent/guardian required
- Lunch will be provided
- Participants will receive 5.0 hours of community service
- Excused absence
Topics this year; each topic was submitted by Douglas County Youth:
1. What do YOU want your parents to know more about? Sleep hygiene? School/Life balance? How do we get this info. to them?
2. SRO’s – how does one become a SRO? What training do they undergo?
3. Classes re: mental health for youth and teachers. If there cannot be a DCSD class, how do we share mental health information and resources? Could the community offer classes? Would youth attend?
4. RE: focus on being proactive and not just crisis focused: Counselors at Rec Centers and Libraries? Would youth go?
5. Youth leaders are needed; how we get YOU to the table? We need your voice on many established Boards and Committees, how do we make that happen?
6. Youth mental health groups present to leaders in Douglas County. TAB from the Aspen Effect, SAG’s mental health sub cmte
