PARENT ALERT!
Students are choosing not to follow dress code - we need your help!
Crop tops, jeans with big holes, and sunglasses are really in right now, but they are not dress code appropriate. Please go over the FMS dress code policy with your child.
The nutshell version:
- No hats, bandanas, or do-rags in the building (hair wraps, scarves, and religious coverings are okay)
- No sunglasses or dark lenses (transition lenses are okay)
- No clothing that exposes the skin between the chest area and the end of the fingertips at the thigh (clothing that exposes those areas is fine if clothing that covers the area is worn under those fashionable choices)
- No spaghetti strap tops, off the shoulder tops, or thin strap tank tops (these items are fine worn under something - coverage is key)
- No clothing that can be connected to gangs, drugs, violence, racism, alcohol, or any other inappropriate topic.
- No visible underwear or undergarments.
FMS FOOD DRIVE - PLEASE GIVE!
FMS is participating in a service project called “12 Days of Giving” from Nov. 1st thru Nov. 18th. At the end of the project, the homeroom with the most points will win an ice cream party. Please take a look at the Food Drive List to plan daily contributions. All food collected will be donated to Franklinton Baptist Church to assist with their holiday meal giveaway. Kindness Starts at Home!
Kindness is often stigmatized by some as meaning kind people are naive or weak, that is not the case. However, being kind often requires patience, courage, and strength. Kindness is an important interpersonal skill necessary at home, school, work, and in the community! Are you raising your child to be “tough” in a sometimes cruel world? Or are you raising your child to make the world a kinder place? Read more about the importance of kindness here.
Enjoy more kindness at home by signing up for monthly emails and free activity guides for your family. Make kindness the norm at home at www.randomactsofkindness.org/kindness-at-home
November is Career Development Month!
The district has purchased a program called XELLO which students will be introduced to this year. Students will access Xello in their classlinks and create profiles and complete activities throughout middle and high school. They’ll complete “interest inventories” and research careers and colleges to help them make more intentional academic plans to better support their future career goals.
STEAM LAB, LIBRARY, & MEDIA SERVICES WITH MS. FAULKNER
“Children’s literacy rates have dropped to levels not seen for 30 years. This year’s National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results confirm just how far our children’s reading scores have fallen in the wake of the pandemic.”
Help me, help your child!!
Your student has access to titles here in the Media Center and to titles on SORA!

I am in desperate need of students for the Battle of the Books team. NCSLMA has lowered the number of books from 25 to 16 to be read for competition. Students need to start reading these titles as soon as possible.
There will be an “interest” meeting during all 3 lunches in the cafeteria on Friday, November 4th.
If I cannot get a team together then Franklinton Middle School will not be competing.
Check out the shortened Battle of the Book list this year!
NEWS FROM THE 6TH GRADE TEAM
SCIENCE: MS. DOWNUM
Good afternoon, I hope you all had a great weekend. We have been working on the Ecosystems unit for a while and ended with their Biome Projects. They did so amazing and worked very hard on these projects. I will be grading them and putting the grade into their quarter 2 grades. It will take me a bit of time to grade them all and give them the attention to detail needed. I was really impressed with the work they put into these projects. I had students who went and researched how to make fake snow, brough in elements from outside to have an authentic project, and those that brought in plastic animals. I also had students who made the best out of the materials and created fantastic organisms out of playdough.
We are going to begin the Forces and Motion unit this week or Waves for short. This is the unit they have all been waiting for. We will be dissecting a cow eye. There are a few reminders about this particular lab. Students will need to wear their hair up or pulled back in some fashion to protect it. They will need to have all of their work completed leading up to the lab as the practice is very important. They will need their lab contract signed. I have a few who still don’t have that signed. If a student is unable to complete the lab for whatever reason there will be an alternate lab provided so they aren’t missing out on the educational content. This is a big lab and is a hit every year. Even those who are nervous about it at first love to see the parts of the eye that we have learned about right in front of them.
SOCIAL STUDIES: MS. BROOKS
In Social Studies, we are finishing our unit on the Early Humans. Students will have an in class project and test on the Early Humans unit next week. In the upcoming days, students will begin learning about the earlier civilizations starting with the first river valley civilization of Mesopotamia. If you have any questions, please email me at jericabrooks@fcschools.net.
MATH: MR. MITCHELL
Hello,
I hope everybody has been enjoying the holidays so far.
The school year has been coming along just fine. We are currently in the middle of Unit 3 where we are learning about unit rates used in retail stores all throughout the world. Ask your students to let you know about what they have been learning the next time you are at the grocery store!
As the quarter has come to an end, there are extra credit opportunities available posted in Google Classroom. Please encourage your student to check the Google Classroom under the ‘Q1-Extra Credit’ topic in their ‘Classwork’ tab. This opportunity is available until midnight tonight (11/1) and the points will be added tomorrow after school, so please keep an eye on Powerschool for updates on grades as the quarter comes to a close.
As always, please reach out with any questions and I will do my best to answer them in a timely manner!
Thanks,
Mr Mitchell
ELA: MS. MCINTOSH
Can you believe it? It’s already November! Stay strong everyone!
Notes for the week:
We are still moving forward with i-Ready lessons weekly. We are compelling the students to spend an hour and passing 3 lessons for 70% or higher every week. i-Ready helps close the academic gaps for all students. Please continue to encourage your student to complete their lessons for a grade.
We will continue to read chapters 9-12 of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief this week. So please read in Sora (our online library). Corresponding assignments will be added to Google classroom.
We will begin FFM (first five minutes of class) assignments on Monday, November 7th. This gives students extra practice with inferencing and a opportunity to get additional points towards their grade.
ALL issues have been resolved with google classroom. I will be going through and adding all missing grades in powerschool. Parents and students will receive an email with confirmation of completion.
If you have any questions or concerns AFTER the email has been sent please contact me.
NEWS FROM THE 7TH GRADE TEAM
ELA: MS. BAECHLE
Happy November students and families! As we officially get into the holiday and busy season, be sure we are checking our grades and staying on top of any missed work. Be sure to check Powerschool regularly and reach out with any questions. Starting Q2 11/2/22, late work will be marked down and your overall grade will be affected. We are working closely on having students take accountability for their actions and be responsible for their work on a regular basis.
This week students are completing their Compare and Contrast or Argumentative essay. They utilized graphic organizers, class notes/vocabulary and textual evidence to support their claims in connection to their first text, “Lyddie.” Next week we will be taking a closer look at challenging standards and skill-sets from the ELA Check-in one, while closing gaps in comprehension and strengthening certain skills.
Students, be sure you are completing 45 minutes of both ELA and Math in I-Ready on your pathway each week. You MUST have a minimum of 45 minutes and two passing lessons to receive credit. This is a weekly grade. I am excited with the work and growth I have seen thus far this school year and I know we will only continue to improve and excel!
Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns at: kimberlybaechle@fcschools.net
SOCIAL STUDIES: MR. JONES
Happy November students and families! This week we are getting into the Age of Reason/Age of the Enlightenment. Students are rounding out Q1 strong and I am looking forward to this trend continuing into Q2. I have spoken with students who are missing work and know it is due by Thursday afternoon. We will be taking a quiz this Friday as a recap for the week and will be getting into the American Revolution next week. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me at hunterjones@fcschools.net
NEWS FROM THE 8TH GRADE TEAM
SOCIAL STUDIES: MR. DOWNUM
In class we have started The American Revolution and we will hopefully be finishing this half of the unit in the next two weeks. We will focus much of our time on the causes of the war, and less time on the battles. We learn more from why we fought than from the actual battles. The students will spend the first week working on a hyperdoc on the causes of the war and then we will focus on some of the individual causes and look at them more closely.
We have also been looking at voting and the students will be looking at both NC Senate candidates and voting in class on Monday (We don’t have school on election day). The students will be looking at both candidates stances on topics to see who the student thinks is the best choice.
SCIENCE: MS. HEAD
In Science, we are finishing up our shorter unit on Energy with a post test Wednesday 11/9. There will also be a vocabulary quiz Wednesday 11/2. Our next unit will be on Hydrology. In the Second Step lessons, we are starting the second unit about recognizing bullying and harassment. Please let me know if any questions come up (my email: nadinehead@fcschools.net). Thank you!
ELA: MS. FROST
We are beginning the final unit of the novel, Unbroken and students are building close reading strategies such as annotating the text, analyzing character traits, analyzing and creating themes based on text evidence, and writing argumentative / explanatory texts. Over the course of the next two weeks, we will revisit the data from the Reading NC Check-In and review the assessment with students. The results will determine what our strongest area of focus will be based on the Standards during instruction in preparation for benchmarks and the mid year NC Check-In.
UPDATES FROM THE ELECTIVES TEAM
DRAMA: MS. HATTEN
6th grade has done some AMAZING work creating Greek and Roman masks. They put a lot of thought and hard work into their projects.
7th grade is currently working on sock puppets for their fractured fairy tale stories. Look for those to be showcased soon!
8th grade is starting a shadow puppet project along with their world drama research. They don’t know it yet, but this really is a lot of fun! PLEASE REMIND YOUR STUDENTS TO BRING THEIR CHROME BOOK TO CLASS FULLY CHARGED. THEY ARE MISSING OUT ON BEING ABLE TO DO THEIR RESEARCH WORK IF THEY DON’T HAVE WHAT THEY NEED FOR CLASS.
ART: MS. CLIFTON
The students have finished their Tim Burton Selfies and their Yayoi Kusama Paper mache pumpkins and mushroom pictures. The students are finishing their stop motion films as well. November is going to be full of all kinds of exciting art.
