Camp Wapo 2023!
This year, 6th graders once again enjoyed Camp Wapo. Sixth-grade Camp has been a tradition at NRMS for 44 years! While it has changed over the years, students enjoy opportunities to participate in classes indoors and outdoors at Camp Wapogasset.
The Camp Wapogasset experience is considered to be a unique opportunity for students and staff to interact with nature in an outdoor setting. Camp Wapogasset is located 4 miles NW of Amery, Wl. The main campsite is a 22-acre peninsula situated between Lake Wapogasset and Bear Trap Lake.
The Camp Wapo field trip is planned as an outdoor-educational experience to give students first-hand exposure to many environmental concepts and ideas that have been learned in the classroom. In addition to interacting with nature, this field trip opportunity provides for social interaction with those attending the camp experience.
Both houses went to camp during the school day from Tuesday, May 16, through Thursday, May 18. On Monday, May 15, and Friday, May 19, students participated in activities while at NRMS that kicked off and wrapped up our Wapo Week.

Featured Grade Levels, Departments and Events!
Each month we highlight a grade level, department or group that strives to share our District's story with the community.
NRHS Mathematics Department
This month we have chosen to highlight the NRHS Mathematics Department.
For the last few years, the New Richmond Math department, as well as Science and Social Studies, have been offering an exciting educational opportunity. In cooperation with the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, and because the New Richmond Math department can meet both curriculum rigor and teacher training requirements, we can offer a chance for students to earn transcripted college credit concurrently while taking high school classes. This year, the Math department offered Dual Academic Credit Programs in Statistics, Calculus I, and Calculus II. We have also been able to offer concurrent enrollment in Chemistry and Psychology in other departments. Since the credits are offered at a reduced rate, this program makes college more affordable and accessible for families and introduces students to higher-level coursework before they immerse themselves in college life. Math alone has had over 90 students take advantage of this exciting opportunity! We look forward to expanding the program to other departments and other classes in the future!
NRMS Art Department
This month we have chosen to highlight the NRMS Art Department.
The art room at the middle school is buzzing with students working diligently on their projects. Our 6th graders have been creating One-Point Perspective Mountain Landscapes and Dragon Eye Sculptures! Our 8th graders have been creating Starry Mountain Landscapes and Water Lilies inspired by Claude Monet! They are focused and engaged with an unwavering dedication as they pour their hearts into their artwork. They exude an unmistakable energy and passion that is both contagious and inspiring!
Hillside 3rd Grade Classes
Where in the world are third graders from Hillside Elementary?
After reading the book, Flat Stanley, where the main character gets flattened by a bulletin board and then travels the world through the mail, students created their own flat selves! They also brought in addresses of people they knew around the world, and they were sent off! Our flat students traveled to places such as Montana, Florida, Texas, and even different continents such as Europe and Asia. Our flat people are currently arriving back at Hillside over the next couple of weeks. Each child gets a special opportunity to share their adventure! This project allows 3rd graders to learn about many different places around the world in a fun and personal way!
Paperjack 5th Grade Classes
Paperjack 5th graders completed a book report this month. The students in 5th grade decorated a plastic bottle to look like a character from their chosen book. Some students created characters such as Auggie from Wonder, Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit, Charlotte from Charlotte's Web, Nadie from Stolen Girl, Hermione from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Dog Man from Dog Man! They used character traits to help dress their characters. They also included a summary of the book that they read.
Starr 4th Grade Classes
Our 4th Grade students at Starr Elementary celebrated Arbor Day with a trip to Mary Park. They were able to walk to the park together, read a story about tree planting along the paved path, get a sapling to take home and plant, and pick up trash on the way back to the school! This was a great opportunity for students to learn about Arbor Day and the importance of the nature around us. Students are excited to plant their saplings and watch them grow! Learning about nature in a variety of ways helps to engage students and inspire them to be nature's friends!
