January Board of Education Notes
January 2023

January Meeting Recap
The Board of Education held its first monthly meeting of 2023 on Monday, January 9 at the District 146 Administration Center.
The Board of Education heard the following:
- For the second year in a row, the District qualifies for Illinois' Property Tax Relief Grant. For this year’s version, the District will be required to abate property taxes in the amount of $1,966,758 for each of the next 2 tax years. In exchange, the District will receive a permanent increase of $1,258,016 in Evidence Based Funding. The District is entering the second year of the first grant, so there will be two abatements this spring.
- Wendy Wolgan, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, told the Board that the Calendar Committee will be meeting again this month to finalize a draft of the 2023-2024 Academic Calendar. The draft will be presented to the Board at the February meeting and then brought for approval at the March meeting.
- In 2022, the District reached more than 564,000 people via social media posts. The posts garnered more than 57,000 likes, shares, and other interactions.
- The new Fulton Mascot was unveiled last month at the school's Winter Sing. The mascot costume was generously provided by the Fulton PTO.
- A district parent addressed the Board about her hope that extra math and reading intervention services would continue after COVID-19 funding expires.
- Jeff Charleston, Director of Business Services, provided the Board with a Quarterly Investment Report.
- The Central Middle School band will be getting some new percussion instruments. Dr. Stawick will ask the Board to declare the old percussion instruments as surplus at February's meeting so they can be donated, sold, or disposed of.
- Matt Shanahan, Director of Buildings and Grounds, shared information about water fountain replacements throughout the District. The Board will take action on this at the February meeting.
The Board took the following action:
- Adopted policy changes discussed at the December meeting.
- Approved an amendment to the District's Intergovernmental Agreement with District 135 for food services.
