Hello, Region 11 CTE and CCMR!

We hope this message finds you all well as we approach the final weeks of the 2022-2023 school year. Reflecting on the past year, it's clear that massive amounts of work were put in, leading to many successes to celebrate!

We want to take a moment to thank all of you for your hard work, dedication, and resilience throughout this school year. Your commitment to education, students, and career readiness has not gone unnoticed, and we are grateful for all that you do.

As we approach the end of the school year, many exciting opportunities and events are happening in the world of CCMR/CTE, and more to come this summer. We also want to remind everyone that it's never too early to start thinking about the next school year. We have already begun planning and preparing for the 2023-2024 school year and are excited to continue supporting our region.

Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to CCMR/CTE. Summer break is on the horizon, and your seniors are smelling freedom. We wish you all a successful end to the school year!

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) invites you to participate in a statewide listening tour for educators, business and industry representatives, parents, and students to gather diverse perspectives on opportunities to strengthen our statewide programs of study. Your input is essential to ensuring that the revised programs of study are aligned to high-wage, in-demand occupations across the state and designed to facilitate strong implementation.

If you missed the face-to-face opportunities, there are two virtual opportunities on May 9 and 12. Each event will have a session for educators in the morning, a session for business and industry representatives after lunch, and an evening session for parents and students. Participants in each session will hear from TEA CTE staff on proposed additions to programs of study and then move into smaller breakout groups to provide feedback on the proposals.

We are offering a group remote opportunity at ESC Region 11 on May 9 from 8:30 a.m. - noon. REGISTER HERE.

Pairing Registration Window

Campuses that do not serve any grade level in which STAAR assessments are administered are paired with another campus in the same district or the district itself for accountability purposes. Pairing registration will be available within the TEA Login (TEAL) system. An email notification will be sent to superintendents of Pairing campuses on Monday, April 24, 2023.

** Note that verifier submission is in May, not June of this year.

The Non-Commissioned Security Officer Level II requires multiple steps for a student to earn the certification. The student must successfully complete the coursework, pass the certification exam, apply for the license through TOPS, and submit fingerprints to earn the certification. Students who are not currently employed by a security company are able to complete the application as an “unaffiliated” applicant.

You may view the TOPS application to review all questions asked of applicants.

TEA will release the consolidated applications for federal grant funding as follows:

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) needs volunteers to review materials under Proclamation 2024 (which includes the new Personal Financial Literacy and Economics course as well as science, technology applications, and several career and technical education courses).

Reviewers are particularly needed for career and technical education courses in Health Science (Medical Coding and Billing, Medical Microbiology, Pathophysiology, and Pharmacology). Teachers, administrators, parents, business community members, and others with appropriate content knowledge are welcome. Please consider joining us—or nominating someone else to join us—for the Proclamation 2024 state review panel (SRP) by submitting a Proclamation 2024 SRP Application. Candidates must be available during the week of June 26, 2023, and be able to read on a computer screen for an extended period.

As part of Federal Agency collaboration to expand and diversify Registered Apprenticeship, the U.S. Department of Education/OCTAE recently published a memo affirming that funds for Perkins may be used to develop, improve, and support RA ED-OCTAE Memo_23-1_Apprenticeship.pdf (on link ctrl/click).

The memo was targeted at State Directors of Career and Technical Education.

Introducing FutureLab — a Gentech Science Education Program

Students and Teachers can access FutureLab biotechnology resources through Discovery Ed. For more information, contact ESC Region 11 Digital Resources Consultant Maria Collins at mcollins@esc11.net

Through a partnership between the Texas Education Agency and Learning Undefeated, the Texas Mobile STEM Lab will provide STEM engagement opportunities for students during the 2023-2024 school year. Using a custom-outfitted STEM learning space, the mobile lab provides engaging, hands-on educational experiences for K-8 students and teachers.

All Texas public schools that offer classes for grades K-8 are eligible to apply for a free visit during the 2023-2024 school year. At least one school district from each educational region will receive a visit. The application window is April 3, 2023, through May 26, 2023. Click on the video for more information.

White Settlement ISD Education and Training Students support future teachers in their GoTeach11 Education Preparation Program coursework. ESC Region 11 Teacher Certification Specialist Stevi Motheral shared: "We had another great day with the help of BHS students in our Lesson Facilitations! Pictured here is teacher candidate Meghan McNicholas teaching a 1st-grade lesson on the sequence of events of a story. You'll see the BHS students listening intently and pretending to be 1st-grade students during the read-aloud and the activities she had planned. Afterward, the students have an opportunity to give feedback to the teachers on their lessons and help the teacher candidates grow in their practice."

May 10 virtual information session:

Teachers and administrators are encouraged to register for a virtual information session on May 10 at 2:00 p.m. (ET). The challenge team and Department representatives will provide an in-depth overview and answer questions about the challenge.

We would appreciate you sharing this information with educators in your state. See below for sample social media, newsletter, and web content. If you have any questions or would like to request additional sample communications, please contact harrison@luminary-labs.com.

Thanks to the generous support of Jobs for the Future and the US Department of Education, the University of Texas at Austin is accepting applications from rural Texas teachers to participate in the WeTeach_CS Rural Certification Collaborative. This cohort will consist of in-service teachers who will work within a community of practice as together they deepen their Computer Science (CS) content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and equitable strategies and be supported to obtain their high school CS 8-12 teacher certification by preparing for and passing the TExES 241 exam.

This program is offered at no cost to the teacher, campus, or district. Space is limited to 20 rural Texas teachers.

Upon successful completion of the professional development portion of the program, each participant will receive a stipend of $1,500. Teachers that successfully obtain their CS 8-12 teaching certification will receive an additional $1,000.

With funding opportunities opening up this year through the Economic Development Administration (EDA), Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors and Science (CHIPS) Act, and funding for broadband infrastructure, the North Central Texas Economic Development District (NCTEDD) wants to make you aware of two new tools that the EDA has created to help with data information and analytics. Data is essential to grant applications, and we hope these new tools will assist you with grant applications, as well as any reporting or other data needs you might have.

• Economic Development Capacity Index (EDCI) data on county-level economic development capacity related to financial, human capital, industry composition, infrastructure, institutions, and partnerships
• National Economic Resilience Data Explorer (NERDE) information and data on economic distress, including local economic recovery and resilience analysis

Summer Ag Academy (SAA) opportunity available this summer to K-12 teachers of all subjects (including district and ESC educators) in the DFW area. We’re hosting one of our SAAs at the Texas A&M AgriLife Dallas Center, which is a state-of-the-art research facility, on Thursday, July 20. Our team has worked diligently to offer a great opportunity to learn about urban agriculture and how to incorporate it into the classroom.

In this professional development course, CTE teachers and administrators will learn what authentic work-based learning (WBL) is and how to ensure that students learn the skills and knowledge appropriate for their career pathway in a safe and appropriate environment through collaborative partnerships with local employers. This course introduces basic laws, rules, and procedures relevant to teaching career and technical education (CTE) courses that involve WBL at the secondary school level in Texas. This meets state requirements for WBL training for Career Prep, WBL, and Practicum courses.

The Texas Hotel and Lodging Association (THLA) is thrilled to offer the 2nd annual Hotel Summer Camp for high school students to learn about Lodging and Resort Management career paths this summer. The camps introduce students and teachers to the array of exciting potential careers within the hotel industry and include a tour of the area college that offers a hotel program. Participants will tour a full-service hotel property as part of the camp agenda. During these tours, the participants will hear inspiring presentations by hotel department managers highlighting their career progression and current leadership positions. In addition to learning about the hotel industry, students will attend sessions on SMART Goalsetting, How to Present Yourself in a Digital World, Customer Service, and Job Search Strategies. College professors and community business leaders present the sessions.

Each of the camps culminates with a College and Career Fair, which allows students to practice the skills gained during the camp to interact with hotel college and hotel employer representatives to consider future education and career opportunities as well as potential summer employment.

• San Antonio – June 19-21, 2023, at the Hilton Palacios del Rio
• Houston – June 28-30, 2023, at the Hilton University of Houston

THLA received a national award for the best Education/Workforce Development program in the nation from the International Society of Hotel Associations for their offering of hotel summer camps last summer.
