The PHS Compass
11/3/2023
Dear Pirate Families,
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits! We have had a busy last few weeks on the Pirate Ship with Homecoming, our Lahaina fundraiser, and the end of Quarter 1. As we enter the month of November, I wanted to take this opportunity to share some important updates and information about our school and upcoming events.
Student-led Conferences:
- Our conferences will be held on November 20th and 21st.
- We host student-led conferences and it is part of your student's grade in advisory to prepare for and host this conference.
- This is an excellent opportunity to discuss your child's progress toward graduation (Pirate Points, Credit Accrual, and GPA) with their teachers.
-More details regarding conferences can be found below.
Thanksgiving Break:
Please be reminded that there will be no school from November 22nd to November 24th due to the Thanksgiving holiday. We hope you enjoy this time with your family and loved ones.
We appreciate your ongoing support and involvement in your child's education. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or our school office. Working together, we can provide the best educational experience for your children.
Thank you for entrusting us with the education and well-being of your child. We look forward to a productive and successful month of November.
Warm regards,
Kalin Cross
Proud Principal
Phoenix High School
End of Quarter 1:
What you can expect to see on your student's report card-
- Academic Grades: These grades represent a student's level of understanding and mastery of the subject matter in their classes.
- Citizenship Grades: An evaluation of a student's behavior, attitude, and participation within the school community. These grades are not related to academic performance but focus on how well a student demonstrates qualities such as respect, responsibility, cooperation, and good citizenship within the school environment.
- Teacher Comments: Teacher comments provide insights into a student's performance beyond just letter grades. They offer a personalized perspective on a student's strengths, weaknesses, and overall classroom behavior.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to teachers with any questions you may have. We love to partner with families to support students!
Student-Led Conferences
Students will be prepared to talk you through their high school transcript, Pirate Points, and more. After your student has completed their conference with you, you will be able to drop into teacher classrooms before the next round of student-led conferences starts.
You will be hearing from your student about possible times for your conference on either 11/20 or 11/21 and we will also send you a post-card reminder.
This conference is a required "assignment" for your student to pass their advisory course.
College Application Week (Seniors)
Here's information from Mr. Ruiz on this awesome event:
Nov. 6th-9th is a short week so we will have 4 days with fun College Application themes geared toward having seniors come in to pursue their next steps after high school, and for our Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors we hope to increase awareness of the opportunities available beyond these walls!
Tuesday, Nov. 7th - Sabroso Pozole Application Workshop! 3pm-6pm! Whether College Applications, Work Applications, or Scholarship Applications, we will be feeding students with Pozole during our after-school workshop. If they came in earlier in the day and completed an application they can come by and snag a bowl as well!
Wednesday, Nov. 8th - 1st Gen Day! Door Decoration Judging! We will be posted up outside Student Resources during break, and lunch to have students who will be 1st Generation college students post on the bulletin board and receive information about opportunities they have. We will also have students who have applied to college post on the board. By the end of the day, we will also have made our final decision regarding the Door Decoration Contest!
Thursday, Nov. 9th - "'DONUT" Forget to Apply"/College Swag Day! We will have hot water, coffee, cocoa mix, tea, and DONUTS for students who come in to complete applications! At the same time, we will be having a COLLEGE SWAG SPIRIT DAY - students who wear swag from their favorite college will earn spirit points. We encourage staff to rep their alma mater or favorite team!
We're excited to support students with their next steps!
