WIAA Sportsmanship Award
We are extremely excited to announce that Lodi High School recently earned the WIAA/Rural Mutual Insurance Company Team Sportsmanship Award for the 2023 fall State Tournament. This is a significant honor not only because of the contributions from the team and coaching staff, but from our students and staff at the high school, as well as the entire Lodi community. Thank you for all you did in supporting our team in a positive manner this past season!
The following was posted on the WIAA website recently regarding this prestigious award:
The WIAA/Rural Insurance Sportsmanship Award is presented to one school program and community–or communities in the case of cooperative programs–in each of the State team tournaments that demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship. Award winners are determined by the conduct and sportsmanship displayed by athletes, coaches, cheer and support groups, mascots, bands and spectators. Additional consideration is given for the effort of school administrators and chaperones to ensure support for their teams are positive and that the highest ideals of sportsmanship are demonstrated.
Lodi is this year’s recipient of the award for the State Football Finals, which was held at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wis., on Nov. 16-17. The Blue Devils earn the honor for the second time in football and for the sixth time overall. In addition to the award earned in football in 2017, they also received recognition for team wrestling in 2003 and 2005, for boys basketball in 2012 and for girls basketball in 2013. A large contingent of Lodi supporters displayed outstanding sportsmanship and community support in a 38-14 victory over Luxemburg-Casco in the Division 4 title game. It was the Blue Devils’ second football State championship and their third appearance in the State football championship game. Schools receiving honorable mention are Badger, Black Hawk/Warren, Ill., Darlington, Edgar, Luxemburg-Casco, Stratford and Wrightstown.

Patchwork Enterprises Holiday Sale
The students and staff in Creative Economics would like to thank each and everyone of you who stopped in, checked out the products we make, and made purchases at our Holiday Sale on December 6th. The sale took a lot of work from the students, but they used valuable class time and vocational skills to complete the 40 items we were able to offer for sale. The best part of the sale is when they can showcase their hard work, continue to work on skills needed in a "store" setting, talk about the products, and work one-on-one with each and every customer. We look forward to returning to school on January 3rd and preparing items for our Valentine's Sale early in February 2024.
Thank you again for supporting our small school business.

Holiday Concert is once again a SUCCESS!
The Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Chorale, Treble Choir, Chamber Choir, and Guys in Ties all performed at the high school concert before break and did an amazing job.
Those in attendance were treated to songs sung in English, Latin, Turkish, and French. The night wrapped up with a Lodi tradition: all the choirs combining with alumni and others in the audience to sing the Hallelujah Chorus.
Lodi High School would like to give a special thank you to long-term substitute, Louis Menchaca, for filling in for Mr. Hoeft while he was out on paternity leave. He did a fantastic job with our students!

Advisory Holiday Door Decorating
During our final Advisory/Homeroom SEL lesson of the year, our homeroom teachers led their students through an activity that included decorating their classroom door for the holidays. Each homeroom was given a bag of materials that they could work from, along with specific completion directions. They were only given about 35 minutes to brainstorm as a team and complete the task. Congratulations to Ms. MacRae and Ms. Melchior's homerooms for being the top doors this year. The winners were chosen by the LHS OFFICE ELVES! :)
NHS Gift Wrapping
As part of our 12 Days of Holiday Cheer that takes place every year before Holiday Break, members from the Lodi Chapter of the National Honors Society wraps gifts for staff members. It's a gesture that saves our teachers and other staff a tremendous amount of time during the holiday season. Thank you NHS members for making life a little less hectic for our staff!
FFA Blood Drive
The Lodi High School recently organized and held their annual December blood drive. The event was sponsored through the American Red Cross and was highly attended by students, staff and community members. Thank you Mr. Anderson and our FFA members for organizing and running such an important event during the holiday season.

Nurse Notes, January
Frostbite is an injury to the body that is caused by freezing. Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and color in affected areas. It most often affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, or toes. Frostbite can permanently damage the body, and severe cases can lead to amputation.
Warning signs of frostbite include:
numbness and a white or grayish‐ yellow color to the affected skin, which may feel unusually firm or waxy.
People with frostbite are often unaware until someone else points it out because the frozen tissues are numb.
At the first signs of redness or pain in any skin area, get out of the cold or protect any exposed skin—frostbite may be beginning.
Treatment for frostbite:
If you detect symptoms of frostbite, seek medical care.
Frostbite and hypothermia both result from exposure to cold. If you suspect someone has frostbite, also check if the affected person shows signs of hypothermia.
Symptoms of hypothermia may include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss and slurred speech.
Hypothermia is a more serious medical condition and requires emergency medical assistance.
If there is frostbite but no sign of hypothermia and immediate medical care is not available: Get to a warm place as soon as possible. Unless absolutely necessary, do not walk on frostbitten feet or toes as this increases the damage. Immerse the affected area in warm—not hot—water (the temperature should be comfortable to the touch for unaffected parts of the body).
Or, warm the affected area using body heat. For example, the heat of an armpit can be used to warm frostbitten fingers. Do not rub the frostbitten area with snow or massage it at all. This can cause more damage. Don’t use a heating pad, heat lamp, or the heat of a stove, fireplace, or radiator for warming. Affected areas are numb and can be easily burned.
Frostbite Prevention:
Adults and children should wear:
A hat, scarf or knit mask to cover face and mouth
Sleeves that are snug at the wrist
Mittens (they are warmer than gloves)
Water‐resistant coat Waterproof and insulated boots or shoes.
Family Resource(s):

Talk to your child or teen about why e-cigarettes are harmful for them. It’s never too late.
Illness Reminder:
A friendly reminder with any virus to keep your child home until they are 24 hours vomit, diarrhea, and/or fever free without fever reducing medications and when your child(s) symptoms have improved.

Food Service
Happy New Year to Students and Families!
I hope everyone had great holiday time with your families. In January I will be randomly picking out students to interview and get feedback on our food service program. We want to know what you would like on the menus. I got the feedback on the plant based specials loud and clear. You do not like them! Please keep trying them as we may hit on one that you like.
Our pork poutine went over very well and we will be putting that on our regular menu rotation. Our Harvest of the Month for January is grapefruit, kale and sage. Watch for items that have these ingredients in them like the kale salad. Our Limited Time Offer this month is Rolled Chicken Enchilada Verde with Salsa. Our plant based LTO is Mexican Black Bean Sweet Potato Tacos. Please try these offerings and give us feedback as always.
Reminders: please be sure that your account is current. Also, please have a conversation with your student if you have placed an ala carte block on your account so we do not have to take away the ala carte purchases at the register. This is important as we have to enforce the block and do not want to embarrass anyone.
Lastly, Happy New Year! I hope it is a great one for all of us!

HS Girls Swim Team Breaks School Record!
It is with great pleasure that we will be adding Ginny’s name to our swim team record board!
This season we had a foreign exchange student from Italy join our team. Ginevra (Ginny) Longi has been competitively swimming since she was five years old. We were excited for her arrival knowing that she was a fast freestyle and breaststroke swimmer! She exceeded all expectations and broke the 100 Breaststroke school record at the Division 1 Sectional Swim Meet in Middleton, swimming a 1:10.76! Congratulations, Ginny!
Ginny is an incredible person who has volunteered her time to our youth swim team. Our kids have been so blessed to have Ginny become a part of their lives. We are grateful for her expertise, her kindness, and her love for swimming! Thank you Ginny we will miss you!

LHS Staff Appreciation
Appreciate a Staff Member!
We have so many amazing educators here at Lodi High School! Last year, Mr. Jelinek and Mr. Marshall sat down with each staff member, and one of the common themes that came up was how much our staff love to be appreciated by the families that they serve. When you experience a staff member who is going above and beyond or deserves some recognition, please consider giving them a shout-out through our staff appreciation google form. Your appreciation will be put on a staff appreciation poster and shared with that staff member.
