IOWA Assessments in 8th Grade
During the week of Oct. 21-25, 2019, the 8th grade students will take the IOWA Assessments, which are standardized, norm-referenced tests. The results from these assessments will be used to show parents and teachers how the students are performing nationally in comparison to other students at the same grade level. Scores on nationally-normed tests are also one criterion used to determine placement for the Talented and Gifted program.
Testing will begin each morning at 8:55 a.m. to about 10:30 a.m. and students will follow an adjusted schedule for the remainder of the day. Students must be on time each day or they will not be able to take the test. They will be required to take the test during the make-up sessions in the afternoons.
The following tests will be given:
Monday, Oct. 21 – Reading
Tuesday, Oct. 22 – Vocabulary and Written Expression
Wednesday, Oct. 23 – Math Concepts
Thursday, Oct. 24 – Science and Social Studies
Friday, Oct. 25 – Spelling, Capitalization, Punctuation, Computation
The IOWA Assessments are taken on school-based iPads or desktop computers.
In preparation for the test, students should:
· Get a good night’s sleep
· Charge iPads fully every night
· Arrive to school on time
· Eat breakfast
· Bring a novel to read if they finish early
· Leave cell phones and/or iWatches in their lockers
If you have any questions, please contact Anita Erickson, 8th Grade Assistant Principal at ericksona@fultonschool.org .
(PBIS) Positive Interventions and Support
Our school wide matrix, featured below, highlights the expectations we have taught to the students of Autrey Mill for each area of the school. Every expectation falls under one of our two core values: Respect and Responsibility. This week, we’d like to take a moment to shine a spotlight on these two core values, their definitions, and what they mean to us as Autrey Mill Lions.
We believe that respect and responsibility are essential in creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn. Therefore, every expectation is tied to one of these two core values.
Being respectful is an act of humility. This act honors our school as a place to gather, learn, and build a foundation for future successes. We have taught our students that being respectful means keeping our school clean, using kind, school appropriate language, and cooperating with adult directions. These are just a few of the expectations found under the core value respectful on our matrix. We ask our students to be respectful in all areas of our school in order to provide them with a safe learning environment.
Being responsible is an act of accountability. This act honors our school as a place of integrity where people choose to do the right thing every day. We ask our students to be responsible in all areas of our school so that they can build strong habits of consistent accountability. We have taught our students that being responsible means being in class with all required materials by the bell, checking work for accuracy and completion before submitting it, and charging their iPads to 80% each day before school. These are just a few examples of expectations found under our core value responsible on our matrix. We ask our students to be responsible in all areas of our school in order to provide them with a productive learning environment.
.Ultimately, respect and responsibility are both essential in creating safe and effective schools. We need both in place in order to educate all children. We encourage you to talk to your students about respect, responsibility and what it means at home, school, and our community.
Red Ribbon Week Coming Soon at AMMS!
Red Ribbon Week, October 28- November 1, 2019
It is up to each of us to send a message to ourselves, our peers and our communities about the importance of taking care of ourselves and making healthy choices. Healthy choices can be anything from what we eat or drink, how much exercise we get, how we spend our free time, and how we treat others.
Monday 10/28 – Wear Red Day
Message: Wear RED to show your support for Red Ribbon Week and your commitment to living a healthy life!
Tuesday 10/29 – Everyone has a Name: Wear Name Tags and Greet One Another By Name
Message: “A person’s name is to him or her the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” – Dale Carnegie. Why is it so important to use people’s names? A person’s name is the greatest connection to their own identity and individuality. Some might say it is the most important word in the world to that person.
Wednesday 10/30 – Wear Your Favorite T-Shirt
Message: Having hobbies, passions, and being involved in positive things keeps you healthy! It not only provides the opportunity to be unique and an individual; but can also connect you with others with similar passions!
Students/teachers can wear a t-shirt that expresses a something positive they have a passion about or something they love. Example: favorite movie, favorite team, favorite band, favorite quote, favorite color. Notice peers/find friends with the same interest as you in each period and take a selfie!
Thursday 10/31 - Random Acts of Kindness All Day Long!
Message: Compassion and kindness reduce stress, boost our immune systems, and help reduce negative emotions such as anger, anxiety, and depression. Kindness strengthens our sense of community and belonging.
Friday – Nobody Eats Alone: Eat with someone new at lunch and make sure no one is sitting alone.
Message: Making new friends prevents loneliness and gives you a chance to offer needed companionship, too. Friends can also increase your sense of belonging and purpose, boost your happiness and reduce your stress – which can ultimately lead to a healthy, drug-free life!!
Red Ribbon Week Poster Contest!
Create a poster using the theme:
Send A Message Stay Drug Free!
We will be collecting posters first thing in the morning on Monday, 10/28, Tuesday 10/29 & Wednesday 10/30 in the Rotunda. PRIZES will be awarded for the best posters on Friday 11/1!
The Big Thank You
Dear AMMS Families,
We want to give our troops a “Big Thank You” with a little taste of home this Thanksgiving. Every single soldier deployed outside the United States deserves to receive a letter of gratitude on Thanksgiving Day. Each year, our school, with help from The Bert Show, sends out letters to the troops for Thanksgiving. Last year, we collected 1,090 letters! These letters are in celebration of our troops’ service and are wishes of warmth as they are away from their family over the holiday. Students will have time during our homeroom IMPACT time to create and write their letters. If you would like to write and send in your own letter, we can help you get it delivered!
Please send in your letters by October 24th at the latest.
You can also mail in or drop off your own letters to the locations listed here!
September Students of the Month
We are excited to announce our September Students of the Month. These students were nominated by our science teachers for demonstrating the qualities of the "We are Connected" Mindset". These students explore relationships with others, embrace diversity, and relish competition. They allow us to maximize our potential with and through others, not only in school, but in our community as well.
These students will be recognized with a special celebration during their grade level lunches on November 1st.
