Update and Upcoming Events
January 13, 2023
Hello PLES!
Thank you Mr. Mustico for being our Watch D.O.G. today! If you or someone you know is interested in being a Watch D.O.G., please contact Holly Oliver at holiver@avongrove.org.
Next week, PLES will conduct a security drill with students and staff. Teachers will review plans and expectations with students leading up to the drill.
Kindergarten Registration for the 23-24 school year is almost upon us. A Kindergarten Information session will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 6:00pm. This event will be in English and Spanish and will take place in the PLES cafeteria as well as live streamed via the district website. Kindergarten registration will be from 2/2-2/17. More information can be found on the kindergarten registration page of the district website. Please help spread the word to any friends or neighbors.
The AGSD Technology Department is hosting a digital literacy night on 1/31, in English and Spanish, for caregivers to learn more about our tech apps. Please see the attached flyers for more information.
We have seen an increase in students arriving in carlines for both PLES and AGIS with the colder temperatures. In an effort to ensure students arrive safely and on time, we will begin unloading students in our carline at 8:15. We did an unannounced trial run for the past few days and this seems to have solved many of our carline troubles. When entering the school, students should report directly to the front lobby to be supervised by staff until 8:20. Our dismissal process will remain the same and there will be no changes for bus riders.
With winter upon, we would like to remind you of the district’s plan for inclement weather. Please note that we have had 2 closures so far this school year.
Days 1-3:
In the event that we need to close schools due to inclement weather, the first three (3) closures are traditional snow days, with no online instruction taking place. Each day the District is closed will result in a make-up day, added to the approved 2022-2023 academic calendar at the end of the school year.
Days 4-8:
If we need to close schools for additional days, AGSD will implement five (5) Flexible Instruction Days (FIDS). During FIDS, all students will engage in remote, online learning. FIDS do not extend the school calendar.
Penn London students will log on at 8:40 for one hour. During this time, students will participate in morning meeting and review work for the day with their teacher. Your student’s teacher will also be available for support for one hour in the afternoon. Teachers will share the specific time with their classes.
A resource video for parents for how to support your student during Flexible Instruction Days is available below:
Days 9+:
If we need to close schools for any additional days, we will return to traditional school closures, with make-up days added to the calendar.
In the event of an emergency school closure or delay, families will be notified by AGSD prior to 5:30 a.m. via email, phone call and text message, if you have opted to receive texts from the District. In addition, a pop-up message will be posted to our website and local news channels will be notified.
Remember there is no school Monday, January 16th!
