Manitou Springs High School
Mustang News - October 29th, 2021
From The Principal...
Manitou Springs High School took part in Instructional Rounds on Thursday, October 28th. Here is some important information about the process:
Why: Instructional rounds help educators look at school wide instructional practices in a systemic, purposeful and focused way. They help a school celebrate successes and plan instructional next steps.
What: Small groups of 5 people (including our school's admin and a small number of MSHS students, parents, and staff) spend 15 minutes making “rounds” in all classrooms collecting data on a specific look for(s) that the school is working on. This year, we have decided that purposeful student collaboration is our focus since it ties into the Language Rich Classroom techniques we have learned and will be diving deeper into.
Here are the 2 focus questions that were used to collect data:
1. The Tasks: What evidence is there that staff purposefully planned for student collaboration opportunities (through structured reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities)?
2. Performance: What evidence is there that all students practiced collaboration in the learning environment?
We will have instructional rounds again in the spring. My goal is for all MSHS teachers to have an opportunity to participate in this process over a 3 year cycle.
The data collected will help our school determine how we move forward with engaging all students at MSHS. I look forward to sharing our celebrations and takeaways from this process!

Mask Wearing Requirement on MSSD14 Transportation
Federal Law currently requires students and staff wear masks on our school buses.
The difficulty of mask enforcement while the bus is in motion cannot be overstated. The driver simply must focus on safe driving, and enforcing mask wearing, while the bus is in motion, is not a safe practice. Even when efforts are made to enforce mask wearing, students are still able to pull them down when the driver should not and cannot be looking.
Our drivers:
hand out masks when students board and they do not have a mask.
remind student riders of the expectation.
notify principals when a child is not wearing a mask.
Principals will be in contact with parents if their child is not wearing a mask while riding a school bus.
As we continue to work towards all students consistently wearing a mask on the bus, if you would like your child to sit in a specific seat, we can make those arrangements with the bus driver in a private and discreet way so other children are not aware of the situation.
We appreciate your understanding and support of these requirements.
