Tiger Tales from Sanborn School
May 8, 2023
Dear Sanborn Families,
We have had an exciting spring season at Sanborn, and are looking forward to the last few weeks of school. Thank you to all of our families who attended Open House and the Book Fair last Wednesday! The home-school connection is very important to your child's success and we appreciate your support. The hallways were lined with lots of student work and artwork, and I know that the students and staff are proud of all of your child's accomplishments this school year! Thank you to our PTA for providing donuts and prizes last week for our staff, and for all of our families who contributed some snacks, soda, or water to stock the staff lounge. We had a great staff appreciation week and appreciate your thoughtfulness.
The students and staff did a fantastic job during the observed fire drill and relocation drill last Wednesday morning. The Fire Department, Police Department, Park District staff and community members were very impressed with how well the students handled the drills. Way to go, Sanborn!
Congratulations to the April Golden Paw Award Winners: Mrs. Garcia's first grade classroom, and Ms. Pawlicki's second grade classroom! They were being respectful, responsible, and safe multiple times as an entire class during the month of April. They will get to celebrate with some extra recess later this week.
We are looking forward to the next few weeks of school filled with lots of learning and fun activities. Please review the calendar near the end of the newsletter which highlights all of the important events coming up. Please reach out with any questions you may have.
Warmly,
Kate Arenberg, Principal

Staff Highlight: 6th Grade Team!
SEL- 6th grade has been doing a lot of team building activities. Students have worked together to create shapes with toothpicks and blocks. Each member of the group only had a little bit of information, but together they could figure out the puzzle.
Hofmann Math - Students have been exploring and learning about linear equations and systems. Lots of discussions and debates have occurred to figure out how to balance equations, find student errors, and develop their own understanding of this topic.
Cohen and Tokarczyk Math- Students have been identifying patterns when dividing whole numbers by unit and non-unit fractions. They have worked hard to figure out the algorithm to divide.
Social Studies - We are studying ancient Greece. Students have been looking closely at the geography and figured out what made Greece a challenging place to live.
Science - Our first Cold Cup Challenge Convention happened on April 26. Students learned about thermal energy and investigated many ways to slow down the process of energy transfer. We had a guest speaker come and talk about his job as an engineer and then students began the difficult task of designing their own cup using everyday items that would prevent the transfer of energy. Staff and families were invited to the Cold Cup Challenge Convention to vote for their favorite designs. Who will be the 2023 Cold Cup Challenge Champions? We can’t wait to celebrate all their hard work!
Literacy- Students have been working on creating their own book trailers on a book they enjoyed. Students have to create a video that will set the mood and encourage others to read a particular book.
Sincerely,
6th grade team
Mr. Cohen, Miss Tokarczyk, Mrs. Hofmann, Miss Paraskevas, and Mrs. Muñoz

From the PTA
The next PTA meeting is Tuesday, May 23, at 6:00 p.m. in Sanborn's library or virtually. We have volunteers ready to commit to the board positions for next school year! This is exciting news so that we can continue to offer a wonderful PTA organization that supports our students, staff, and families. On May 23, we will be voting on Sanborn's bylaws and voting in the new executive board for the 23-24 school year. We need a strong showing of Sanborn PTA members at the meeting to help us reach quorum for the action items.
Registration is Open!
Now is the time to register your students for the 23-24 school year; including any incoming kindergarten students! Sanborn will be hosting an incoming kindergarten informational session on May 16, 2023, from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. An overview of what kindergarten looks like at Sanborn will be discussed; as well as registration support will be provided for any families who need the support.
Online student registration for the 2023-2024 school year is now open. Please visit our registration page to start this process.
Registration is the first step in getting ready for the upcoming school year. After you register your child online you need to:
- Pay student fees. Our student fee webpage outlines the District’s student fee structure and the three ways fees can be paid. Information regarding fee waivers for families that qualify is also found on this page of our website.
- New families to the district, kindergarten students, families with a lease, and families that were flagged by our third-party residency verification system are required to provide proof of residency to complete the registration process. Our residency webpage outlines the documents you will need to provide to prove residency.
All returning students MUST be registered by August 1, 2023, or they will be disenrolled from CCSD15. Students who have not completed their registration requirements will not receive a classroom assignment. Families that do not complete the registration by July 31, 2023, should contact their school to re-enroll their child(ren).
All three steps of the enrollment process must be completed prior to the start of the school year.
