The SHARK Alert
Chatham Elementary School Family Update
Friday, October 27, 2023
Dear CES Families and Friends,
It has been a wonderful week here at CES! Wednesday our entire school came together for the October SHARK Assembly. Our SHARKS were happy to learn that their detective skills were improving when Mr. DiNoia was revealed as the Mystery Shark. We were treated to a special concert by the flute players, drum rolls from the 4th-grade Shark Bait band, and an original song "I'm Never Giving Up" from the 4th-grade Shark Attack band. We had shark mascots dancing and welcoming us to the gym along with lots to celebrate from the winners of Sgt. Massey's monthly Pizza Party (Mrs. King's class earned the most tickets) to the pumpkin carving winners (Mr. Anglim's class for their great work with math fluency). Our student newspaper reporters read some of their articles (you can check out the student newspaper, SHARK Talk, HERE) and we celebrated this year's first nominees to the CES Sea of Success (see more below).
We have another special celebration coming up on Wednesday, November 8th for our local and related veterans in honor of Veterans Day. Please see below for more information on how families can share photos to be included in our veterans' slide show. We welcome any veterans and current service men and women to join us for the special assembly as we show our gratitude for those who serve.
I hope to you this afternoon at 4:00 for the annual Halloween parade.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kelly

CES Veterans Day Assembly 2023
In addition to student presentations and music, we will be presenting a slideshow of CES student and staff's veterans. You can view last year's video HERE.
We need your help in making this event a success. If you are a veteran, current serviceman, current servicewoman, or related to a veteran or current military member please share our invitation to the assembly. We also would love to add their photo to our slideshow presentation.
There are two forms below:
- RSVP for Veterans - this form should be completed for any veterans or current military members who will be joining us for the assembly. Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate all families for this event and are limited to our veterans.
- Photo Submissions - this form should be used to submit photos and information for our family member slideshow
Please contact Dr. Kelly at jakelly@monomoy.edu with any questions. We look forward to welcoming our veterans and appreciate your support in this special event.
Graphic Novels
One of our primary goals in reading instruction is to have our students engaged in the act of reading and for many students graphic novels are the book of choice. Students are constantly exposed to different types of books. You may find that a classroom teacher might limit students to one graphic novel in their book bag/bin in the classroom to encourage exploration of different types of books, but when it comes to borrowing books from the library, books that are intended purely for pleasure reading, we will not discourage students from taking out graphic novels.
Interested in learning more about the importance of graphic novels? Check out this very short article from Northwestern University HERE.
Sea of Success
On Wednesday, we also had our first inductions to the CES Sea of Success. The following students were nominated by a staff member for going above and beyond on a daily basis. These students exemplify what it means to be a CES SHARK.

1st Grade - Maeve F, Christian C, Lucas D, and Tulsi P.
2nd Grade - Ana S, Gavin G, Emmett N, Lily G
