COLLEGE TIP OF THE WEEK
What is a Research University?
Research universities tend to be larger institutions and focus on research but there are also smaller research universities.
They are both public and private universities.
Some are very selective and some state public universities that require a 3.0 GPA to attend
An advantage of attending a research university is that your professors are experts in uptodate information in their fields.
Another advantage is that there are usually more opportunities for undergraduates to be participate in that research.
Research Happens in all Areas of Study
EXAMPLES of a Student’s Experience at a Mid Size Research University
Students are drawn to these schools because their locations near Washington, DC. There is more than just law and politics, there are opportunities in all areas (media, communications, STEM)
- Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Maryland)
They do not have a core curriculum so students can take more classes in the areas that interest them. There is a site that lists all opportunities and students contact the professor if interested. You can do as many as like with relative easy.
-American (Just outside of Washington DC)
Students that attend American are go getters who were voted most likely to be President of the US. The majority of students participate in more than one research or internship experiences. They tend to be competitive and students must go through an application process. (Students do not think this is a good skill to have for their future careers) Stanford does this too!
TERMS TO KNOW - From Last Year’s Newsletter
R1 University (Very High Research Activity)
Carnegie Classification system is used to measure research activity at a given school. R1 is the highest level of research activity. They receive both federal and private funding and have at least 20 doctoral programs.
R2 University (High Research Activity)
Have a lower level of funding
Flagship University
Flagship university is an informal term. When colleges say they are the “flagship university” they usually are the first public or “the best”university in their state. These colleges receive the most state funding.
Land Grant Universities
Started in the 1800s. The federal government gave land to institutions as an incentive to start universities that focused on agriculture, science and engineering for all social classes (as opposed to the liberal art colleges),

Careers in Engineering from LINK for Counselors
Engineering is a broad and exciting field with many different areas of specialization. For students with an interest in STEM, becoming familiar with their engineering options can go a long way. This being the case, it can help someone in your position to have a rough understanding of some of the main types of engineers.
Some popular engineering roles include:
Chemical engineers: These professionals utilize their expertise to help create and manufacture a wide array of products, such as asphalt and gasoline. This is a role perfect for students with an interest in chemistry and manufacturing.
Civil engineers: These engineers are tasked with aiding in the designing and building of infrastructures, such as bridges. If a student has an interest in some STEM subjects and the field of architecture, this could be a perfect role to pursue.
Mechanical engineer: These professionals play a key role in the creation and innovation of products ranging from robotics to car engines. Students with an interest in building and fixing devices have an opportunity to pursue their passion by becoming mechanical engineers.
Beyond these particular roles, engineering students can specialize in roles such as aerospace engineer and production engineer. Given the many different professional avenues in engineering, it’s vital you’re able to explain to students interested in STEM their many varying options they have.
