Kia ora e te whānau,

On Wednesday this week during whānau ako time we gathered as a full school to watch our Kapa Haka group - Te Whare Toa o Te Tahi o Te Rangi - perform their bracket from the regional competitions in July in Tauranga at which they placed second overall. The group were wonderful; they performed with strength, agility and grace and showed great courage in standing up before their peers. It is easier to perform in front of strangers, and we were really proud of their willingness to summon the courage to perform in front of friends, peers and teachers. Their talent and self-discipline was admirable, and once again we want to acknowledge the Māori department and their coaches for the work that went into preparing them for the competition.

Trident can feel successful when our students can transfer the skills, self-management and discipline from their experience of Kapa Haka into the wider world of their learning at school.The mana that the students felt in this space needs to be replicated and available to them across all the learning spaces at school so that they can, along with all our students, reach personal excellence in all their subjects. In part, this is one of the aspirations of the government’s implementation of the new initiative Mana ōrite Mō te Mātauranga Māori - which aims to ensure that Te Ao Māori is given equal status with the non Māori world view in education. This initiative will form the basis of teacher Professional Learning next week on Wednesday 11th August at our Teacher Only Day in the morning, then in the afternoon teachers will be progressing their understanding of the new NCEA framework’s standards. This is a time of significant change in the education system in New Zealand and we are grateful to have a responsive and committed teaching and support staff who will ensure the changes are transitioned smoothly at the school.

This week the Senior Management and Leadership Team, alongside the BOT, met with our ERO Evaluative Partner, Neil Harray. The Education Review Office has substantially changed the review process for schools. In the past we would receive a visit from an ERO team for a week, during which time the team would observe our teachers, check our documentation and sign off on our performance as a school for another 4-5 years. A new system has been introduced in which we are allocated an evaluative partner from ERO, who will work alongside us to develop our capacity to improve outcomes for students at Trident. Over the next few months we will be contacting whanau through this process and looking forward to engaging you in the quest to make Trident an even better school.

Thank you to all our whanau who have ensured that our students have started the new term well; in correct uniform, in class every lesson and engaged in their learning. This is the way that we can, together, make our students successful in their learning and be able to promise them opportunities beyond their school years. Attendance is vital for achievement, so we need to make every day and every lesson count. The Trident Get2Go programme started early in Term 2 with multiple trainings per week including rock climbing, mountain biking, orienteering and kayaking. The 24 students who competed had to become proficient in all four disciplines to be prepared for the BOP Preliminary Event run by Hillary Outdoors in Rotorua. 24 schools throughout the Bay of Plenty compete for the honour of representing the district on Great Barrier Island (Aotea) in December.

Trident High School this year entered three teams (two Mixed Premier and one Boys Team), each team comprising of eight team members. Only the Mixed teams are able to represent the Region and so being able to field two mixed teams was a fantastic experience. This year Trident won the right to go to Aotea winning three of the four disciplines outright and a close 2nd place in the last. This gave them a total score of 398 points out of a potential 400. To cap it off, the other Mixed Team came in third. The Boys Team also finished strongly coming 7th overall. To have all teams finish in the Top Ten in such a highly competitive event is something that Coaches Helen Dobbin and Marc Camburn were overwhelmed with joy!

The Trident students now have to fundraise whilst maintaining their training regime but look forward to the challenge. The teams comprised of Hannah Baxter, Ollie Fredericksen, Eva Fuller, Leon Scholes, Lilly Collembet, Oliver Christie, Keira Follows, Xavier Christie, Layla Rowland, Ryan Sommerville, Kate Prout, Joseph Spalding, Vita Pilcher, George Blackburn, Sophie Spod, Anton Evans, Braeden Webster, Dominic Brierley, Zach Goldsmith, Max Thompson, Ben Cleghorn, Josh Collins and Leah Rowe.

It will be the 13th time Trident has managed to win the Preliminary event.

We are very fortunate to have the support of local businesses who are willing to give Trident students the opportunity to gain work and life skills. We have students at accountancy firms, cafes, preschools, engineering companies, builder companies and a beautician to name a few. Today we would like to introduce you to three of our students who are doing work experience with electricians. Well done to Zavier de Vries, Nikau Brown and Rehua Wilson-Waenga, who are reliable, well-mannered and ask good questions. Employers value that and so do we at Trident; you make us proud. Thanks Allsparks and HT electrics for supporting our students.

Prefect Malachi Gerrard completed an environmental sustainability mural at Trident last term. Displayed on the outside auditorium wall near the P.E area, it is a lovely addition to our school and a great reminder for all that we must care for our world all day everyday. Malachi says the mural is a representation of what the Trident Environmental Team do throughout the school. During Term 2 they tested water, insulated heat cylinders, cleaned up the Whakatane lagoon and planted over 100 trees. Doing this made Malachi realise the importance of environmental sustainability. She hopes to inspire everyone to be more aware of their environment and for continuing success for the Trident environmental team and their future initiatives. Ka pai Malachi!

Congratulations to Aria Dalgleish who was the principal Cornet of the Quartet that won the National Brass Band Championships during the holiday. She also finished 3rd in the junior Duets. A fabulous achievement by Aria who already has many other musical achievements that she can be very proud of. We also congratulate Mr Spence, Aria's music teacher, who has been working with Aria and the band and continues to produce top Trident musicians year in year out.

On Monday 9th August, staff from Otago University will be speaking to senior students who are interested in the Health Sciences, regarding the support available to them at Otago.

Auckland University Whakapiki Ake Te Whe Programme.

Year 11 Maori students interested in careers in health science are invited to take part in the Te Whe programme held at Whakatane Hospital on the 24th August, Students need to sign up in the careers hub.

They are now continuing with Branch and Corp Training. As well as working at Managed Isolation Facilities around New Zealand. Ashanti-Paige, Tiare, Tallis and Jakob were all part of the Year 12 Service Academy Program. All past students were part of the Year 13 Service Preparation Program.

If you would like to be part of the Year 12 Service Academy in 2022, or as a Year 13 next year, intend on joining the NZDF in 2023, Expressions of Interest will be sought towards the end of Term 3 as part of Subject Selection.

Richard from Fonterra bought a tanker to our Special Education Centre on the last day of Term 2. Students and staff had fun exploring the tanker. We are grateful to the support that Fonterra has given us. Thank you Richard. Thank you Fonterra.

The annual Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Stableford Golf Competition sponsored by the Eagles Golfing Society took place on Monday, 2nd August at Te Puke Golf Club. Teams from Taupo, Rotorua, Tauranga and Whakatane played in the points competition. Teams of 4 players must be from the same school. The best 3 Stableford scores determine the winner. Trident took two teams across for this annual competition and won the overall competition on points taking out the shield as well highest individual Stableford score from Year 13 Luka Watson with 48 points. The winning Trident White team was led by Carson Van Asselt with Luka Watson, Harry Jones and Charlie Hayward. The Trident Blue team was led by Harry Sheaff with Troy McGillivray, Ethan McConnell and Trav Harte. A huge congratulations to all players especially our new Juniors this year Charlie, Troy, Ethan and Luke Vos. We wish Carson all the best for the future as this was his last tournament representing Trident as Captain.

Ka mau te wehi!!

The first night back into competition saw the Trident teams down on players for various reasons. However, it was good to be back on court after the holidays.

The Junior A Boys played a double header with the first game against Edgecumbe then against WHS Black. Trident managed to run their plays and gained good wins in both games.

The Junior Girls have struggled for numbers for a while but the commitment of a few players has been essential to the team. With 6 players ready to take the court, they were awarded the win with WHS defaulting. Thanks to Edgecumbe Junior Boys who stayed on to give the girls a run.

Trident Junior Boys Blue played WHS Black in their game. They ran their set plays well and played strong defence and offence to win the game 61-15.

Trident Senior Girls managed to take the win in a close game against WHS Senior Girls. In another close game, the Senior Boys Blue team went down to WHS black 28-25.

A big thank you to Jorjah Main who score benched 3 games for various Trident teams. Jorjah willingly helps out every week making it easier for managers to do other jobs.

The Boys' travelled to Rotorua on Thursday night for a game that would decide who would probably finish pool play on top.
Tauhara got an early Penalty Corner, the initial shot was blocked, but managed to react the quickest and go 1 up.
Trident got themselves into the game and applied pressure on the Tauhara goal, but we’re unable to score. Tauhara went 2 up with a quick break after turning over possession in midfield. Trident had a number of opportunities to level the score but the Goalie produced a number of fine saves to ensure they went into half time with a two goal lead.
In the second half Trident came out determined to get back into the game. A good passage of play eventually found Lucas Buchan inside the circle who flicked the ball past an oncoming goalkeeper to get Trident back into the match. Trident kept applying the pressure with a number of circle penetrations and penalty corners but again Tauhara’s goalie kept the them at bay. With Trident applying so much pressure the was the risk of exposing the defence to quick counter attack. A few quick breaks from overhead balls resulted in Tauhara stretching their lead to 5-1.
Trident didn’t give in and were rewarded when Brad Rothwell deflected home a well worked penalty corner. Final score 2-5. There are a number of special mentions earned, Harry Jones and Jack Wilson for their tireless running up front, Epa Ruawai for his powerful dribbling out wide. Finally Brad Rothwell and Lucas Buchan for their mountain of work they perform in the middle of the park.
Also special mention to Brad Rothwell and ex Trident student Vance Harvey for their invite to the National Under 18 Training Camp this is a huge achievement and we are super proud of them both.
