3 Power Goal Setting Tips For 2024
Did you know that 95% of people who set New Year’s Resolutions fail to achieve them? What’s worse is most will abandon those goals within the first two weeks! Considering this is the time of the year that is a great reset and point of reflection, it’s worth a look to examine goal setting. Rather than focusing on what goes wrong with those 95%, let’s instead focus on what the 5% do a little differently and even use recent high school graduates as guides:
Get Laser Focused
You’ve likely heard about SMART goals. Essentially, the best achievers of goals ensure their target meets that criteria and, in the process, create a very clear vision. The ones who excel in reaching their goals know exactly what success looks like and what’s driving them to it. So, Instead of making a generic goal such as “lose weight” or even “lose X number of pounds”, ask yourself “Why do I want this and what will life be like when I get there?” Have a specific target time in mind and clear vision of the finish line. This will provide the magnetism to pull you forward through difficult times and frustration that are inevitable.
Develop an Unstoppable Mindset
Building an unstoppable mindset is crucial for overcoming challenges and setbacks that occur on the path towards achieving goals. Depending on the target you can expect to fail 5 times for every 1 success, at least. That means you have to establish a growth mindset and understand that mistakes are incredible learning opportunities and part of the process. There are several ways to achieve this mindset. 1) Seek out feedback from other sources and be receptive to the input of others. 2) Surround yourself with others who are high achievers and push you to be a better version of yourself. 3) Constantly track and reflect on your progress and analyze where course corrections are needed.
Create an Accountability System
Change can be challenging. It’s difficult to sustain the energy to work towards goals even when they are compelling because they still require work. Our internal drive through our focus and clarity of our “why” as previously mentioned will carry us far, but you will have points of weakness too. Create a safety net of external accountability partners (family, friends, teachers, etc) to "check" you specifically when you need it. Expand your accountability system by vocalizing and sharing your goals with others or on social media.

Suicide Prevention, Indicators & Important Resources
Most people experience feelings of grief, sadness, hopelessness, or mild depression at times in life. Especially after a loss of a loved one, a drastic life change, or after receiving terrible news. When these feelings don’t seem to go away it may be time to seek help. A medical doctor is a good place to start. Due to several side effects, it is important to share medications and natural dietary supplements with the doctor. They’ll be able to identify symptoms and perhaps make a referral to a mental health expert like a psychologist, psychiatrist, or a therapist.
The Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network provides free, confidential crisis counseling, suicide prevention, and information and referral services by licensed clinicians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Indicators that a person may be struggling with suicidal ideation are:
- Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
- Talking about being a burden to others
- Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
- Acting anxious or agitated, behaving recklessly
- Sleeping too little or too much
- Withdrawing or feeling isolated
- Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
- Displaying extreme mood swings
The Suicide Prevention Resource Center lists the following three behaviors that may indicate a person is at immediate risk for suicide.
- Talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself
- Looking for a way to kill oneself, such as searching online or obtaining a gun
- Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
Call or text the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 988
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1 (800) 273-8255
Although warning signs of suicide are listed, there are times when there are no signs. A poem about suicide by Leslé Honoré states it best in this excerpt:
It doesn’t always look like Darkness
And it’s so hard to say the words
Out loud
“I need help
This is too much
I don’t want to try anymore”
If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out. Don’t Give Up! You are not alone, let someone hold your hand. Wayne County has several resources for you to get the help you need for a better tomorrow.
