Introducing our new BOT member
At the end of last year the BOT selected two new members to fill existing vacancies, here is the first introduction.
Hello, my name is Allan Proudfoot and I have lived in Hawera for just over 12 years after transferring up from Palmerston North.
My family is a blended family of five children; where one has left the nest, three are at High School and my youngest currently attends Hawera Primary School.
One of our children has intellectual disabilities; our journey has been long and full of trials, tribulations and celebrations. From the support my family has received from schools, services and the community, joining Hawera Primary School Board of Trustees is just one small way of me giving something back.
I have worked in the Dairy Manufacturing sector for 32 years and through numerous rolls I have undertaken I have picked up a wide range of skills that I could bring to the board.
I am very excited about this opportunity and are looking forwards to working with the Board to ensure Hawera Primary School and its students continue to positively grow and develop.

FREE & HEALTHY SCHOOL LUNCHES START IN TERM 2!
The Government is currently introducing a free, healthy, daily school lunch in some schools for all students. We are really excited to let you know that our school will be joining the free lunch programme from in Term 2, 2021.
All parents want to provide their children with a lunch every day. But, as you will know, there are many reasons parents can struggle, often through no fault of their own. We know that some of you will have been particularly affected by the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Offering a lunch for all our children who need it will go some way to helping families and whānau to support their children and tamariki. This is why we have decided to take part in this programme.
Lunches will cater for the diet, health and cultural needs of our students, and we will work with suppliers and the Ministry of Education to make sure they are healthy and nutritious. All suppliers will be required to meet New Zealand food safety standards.
The lunches will be available for all our students. While we know there are hungry children in every community, we do not always know who they are. Providing a lunch to every child means we do not need to single-out those who need it more than others. However, lunches are not compulsory, and you can continue to provide your child’s own lunch if you wish.
We have worked with the Ministry of Education on the best way to meet our school’s needs. We have opted to join a group of schools and have selecting approved suppliers now that the Ministry’s open tender processes has been completed
We are delighted to announce the following suppliers for our school, we have attached some sample menus so you can get an idea of what they will be providing.
MONDAY- Tika Catering
TUESDAY- Subway
WEDNESDAY- Tika Catering
THURSDAY-Tika Catering
FRIDAY- Subway
Please let us know if your child has any special dietary requirements or allergies (if you haven't already) as soon as possible .
Lunches will be delivered to the classrooms in class lots, teachers will be distribute lunches to individuals. Students with special requirements will have named lunches. All packaging and food scraps will be returned to the hall to be collected by our suppliers. Any spare lunches will be refridgerated and distributed as required.
If your child is out of school at 1pm for an appointment etc, their lunch will be put aside for them to enjoy upon their return. Nobody will miss out. Our suppliers have indicated they are happy to arrange pick up and drop off at our various camps and school trips.
The programme will run until the end of 2021 and will be evaluated whilst it is running. This will include feedback from schools, students and suppliers about what the lunches are like, how they are delivered, and if they have an impact on students’ learning and achievement.
This information will help to decide whether to continue beyond 2021, and what an ongoing programme might look like. You can find out more about the programme at: www.education.govt.nz/free-and-healthy-school-lunches
If you have any further questions, please contact our office, or the Ministry at school.lunches@education.govt.nz

Subway
Subway is committed to providing all our customers with a choice of healthy, locally produced foods and our business started as a way for customers to create their own food using the freshest of locally-sourced ingredients. We were first established in New Zealand in 1995, but our restaurants are part of the Subway® global franchised food business, with 40,000 individually owned and operated businesses in more than 100 countries. Each of our 250 New Zealand restaurants are individually owned and operated New Zealand small businesses. All our chicken, beef, turkey, fresh vegetables and fruit are all 100% New Zealand farmed, with our bread also produced by a New Zealand company.
As Owner operator of Subway Hawera, I am excited about the opportunity to be able to supply fresh and healthy lunches to the students. I have had the pleasure of running the Hawera store for the past 15 years, 8 of those as the franchisee. Over the past 13 years I have run a successful school lunch program with many schools, and it is lovely to be able to support so many of these kids, gala and pet days. I also sponsor sport teams and many local charity events throughout the South Taranaki community. I have hired many school students from the local high school over the years, it is so rewarding to be the first employer of these teenagers and offer them the skills to take on the wider world when they have moved off to Uni or full-time employment. I have a team of 10 staff in Hawera Subway and we are very much like a family, most of the crew have worked in the store for over 2 years with myself and one other over 15. I hope in increase the number of local staff hired within the store as a result of this programme. We are strongly focused on sustainability and our impact on the environment through the products and services we provide to the community. Subway are a large supporter to the South Taranaki region, our bread, cookies and danish are made at Yarrows the Baker in Manaia and Cheese is produced at Fonterra Eltham. Our mantra on dealing with local suppliers is to create win-win scenarios to ensure all dealings are sustainable for both parties.
