Welcome back to Term 4. Our Year 12 students have just concluded their end of year Examinations. I anticipate that the students have performed well and will now enter their final preparation before the commencement of their ATAR examinations in a couple of weeks’ time. I ask that you keep our Year 12 students in your prayers as they enter their final chapter of Secondary Education. Next week they will graduate from our College and I very much look forward to celebrating this special occasion with them, their families and teachers on Friday 23 October.

This week, the Emmanuel Catholic College 2020 P&F Association Tuition Raffle was launched. I would like to commend Kerri Muller and the P&F Association for the hard work they have put into gathering all the fantastic prizes. Don't forget to purchase your tickets!

Today Mr Damien Flanagan was acknowledged for his 40 Years of service to Catholic Education in Western Australia. Damien has been at the College since 2001 where he was employed as the Head of HASS, a role he had in the College until 2016. Whilst at Emmanuel, he has taught mainly in the areas of HASS and Religious Education and has been involved in and made a significant contribution to a variety of extra-curricular activities of the College. We too, as a College community, congratulate Damien on his wonderful contribution, over his 40 years, as an educator in Catholic schools.

Today we also welcomed Hammond Park Catholic Primary School (HPCPS) to our College where they held their annual Athletics Carnival. It was a beautiful day and it was great to see the primary school students with their teachers enjoying their annual event.

Early in Week 3, The Arts Learning Area acknowledges and celebrates the talents of students in both the Visual and Creative Arts with its annual MMADDD evening. This event is extremely well received by students, staff and parents. The quality of work from each discipline is outstanding and I am very much looking forward to experiencing the students’ 2020 work. Last term, a number of students were involved in the Catholic Schools Performing Arts Festival. They received wonderful feedback from the judges of their respective events. The highlight was Year 12 student, Tia Christophers (Year 12) who received second place in the Year 11 and 12 Overall Category at this year’s Angelico Art Exhibition. This is an outstanding achievement as Tia’s award was in competition with all other students across all Catholic Schools in Western Australia.

Students are expected to wear their Summer Uniform for the duration of Term 4.

New Sports Uniform

• Students at the College in 2020 have the option of purchasing the new sports uniform or wearing the existing items.
• In 2021, incoming Year 7 and other new students to the College must wear the new uniform.
• All students are required to be attired in the new sports uniform for the commencement of the 2022 academic year.
• Students are not be allowed to mix tracksuit items.
  

The Uniform Shop is located on the northern side of campus. Please enter the College through the main entrance (Gate 2) and follow the internal road around to the left. The Uniform Shop is on the right hand side. Parking is available in the visitor parking area at the front of the College and outside the Uniform Shop.

Please adhere to Government regulations surrounding social distancing when visiting the Uniform Shop (in the shop and if waiting outside). Only one parent and one child will be allowed in the shop at any one time.

The Uniform Shop is stringent with its cleaning practices and all touch points are cleaned after each visitor. We ask that if you are self-isolating, please do not visit the shop at this time. Online orders can be placed by emailing us at uniformshop@emmanuel.wa.edu.au

The Year 12 students should be aware that WACE revision sessions for ATAR subjects only will occur between Monday and Thursday during week 2. Each ATAR subject has 2 compulsory sessions where students will receive feedback from their recently completed exam and complete final preparations with their teachers for the upcoming WACE examinations.

Students are required to attend in school uniform, however only need to be present at school when they have a scheduled session. Sessions commence at 8.15am and conclude at 3.15pm. Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 OLNA results

OLNA results are scheduled to be released by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority next week. These results will be forwarded to families as soon as they become available.

Emmanuel staff and students spent the first week back at College celebrating Mental Health Week. The theme for 2020 is Strengthening Our Community – Live, Learn, Work, Play as we aim at increasing mental wellbeing.

To build a supportive community, we took a holistic look at mental health, sharing ideas, and learning from each other through every day activities.

Students learned about the importance of connecting with others, taking the time to stop and take notice, how giving to others can make them feel better and that an active lifestyle not only keeps their bodies healthy but also boosts their mental health.

On Thursday students were able to participate in a ‘Kitten De-Stress’ demonstrating how interacting with animals can decrease levels of cortisol (a stress related hormone) and boost mood. Students were able to sit and cuddle or play with the kittens from Cat Haven. Animals can have a very calming impact on humans and having a purring kitten sit in your lap is especially calming!

On Friday students were encouraged to take part in a Mindfulness class as well as a Meditation workshop to reduce stress, buffer against lowered mood, and improve resilience.

In 2020, we will continue to aim to boost mental wellbeing by:
• Encouraging each of us to support and look out for one another
• Promoting mental health literacy and self-care tips
• Raising awareness of mental health issues and reducing stigma associated with seeking support.

As part of the Year 11 ATAR Biology course, students are required to complete fieldwork in order to measure the impact humans have on our environment. On Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 October, the Year 11 Biology class travelled out to the Perth Hills Discovery Centre near Mundaring Weir. Students participated in two days of ecological fieldwork with the aim of collecting data on the animals and plants that live in the area.

During the camp students learnt about the geology of the Perth Hills, the flora and fauna species that are found on the Darling Escarpment, and how fire effects the West Australian bushland. Students also had the opportunity to meet rehabilitated animals including a Woylie, some adorable joeys and an Echidna named Lulu who just loved to have her belly tickled.

Overnight students helped set up some Sheffield and Elliot traps to capture animals to be measured for conversation uses. We managed to encounter a small marsupial called a Mardo which we successfully measured before releasing back into the wild.

Overall the camp was a big success with lots of useful data obtained and gave students a great insight into the important work biologists do in the field to track the effects of climate change and human development.

A big thank you must go to Ms Randall for her support on the camp and to all the staff at the Perth Hills Discovery Centre for their expertise and knowledge of the area.

For every container which is recycled and removed from going to landfill Emmanuel will receive 10cents. This will go towards environmental and sustainable initiatives across the College. Containers should be placed into the blue bins next to the bicycle racks.

The WA Government container deposit scheme targets beverage containers most commonly seen as litter. The types of beverage containers covered in the scheme include plastic and glass bottles, paper-board cartons, and steel and aluminum cans between 150ml and 3L. Examples of containers in the scheme include:

• Soft drink cans and bottles
• Bottles waters - both plastic and glass
• Small flavoured milk drinks in LPB or plastic containers
• Beer and cider cans and bottles
• Sports drinks and spirits based mixed drinks

The following are containers not covered by the scheme:

• Natural milk containers - all types/sizes
• Glass spirits and wine bottles
• Aluminium or steel food cans
• Flavoured milk containers - over 1L
• Fruit juice containers - over 1L
• Vegetable juice containers - over 1L
• Beverage containers - over 3L
• Yoghurt containers
• Glass and plastic food jars
• Cordial bottles
• Cask wine
• Cask water containers - over 1L
• Beverage containers - less than 150ml

Year 11 Drama students were fortunate to attend the Black Swan State Theatre Company of WA and experience what it was like to work in a theatre environment for a two day workshop. During this time students completed three master classes. The first focused on directing, where we acted out scenes from Animal farm, a show coming in 2021 and worked as a group to show a scene we had blocked. The second master class covered design, where we were able to design costumes and sets for the show focusing on the animals themselves and the time it is set in. The final master class looked at movement. We focused on the movement of different animals and worked on ways to get into character using our senses.

Throughout the master classes we had the opportunity to learn about each specific area from professionals working in the industry. We were also able to talk to a set builder/designer, an executive producer, two resident artists, a casting agent and two marketing professionals. They shared their experiences of working in the industry, spoke about their career, how they contribute to shows and how they studied to get into their roles.

They all imparted advice and knowledge upon us that we will never forget and we made some amazing friends while we were there. We recommend the master classes to anyone who enjoys theatre as it was such a fantastic opportunity.

Digital Communication Preferred

If you wish to communicate with Student Services regarding your child’s late arrival, early departure, medical certificate or for any other reason we ask that you please do so by email or SMS rather than sending handwritten notes with your child. Please note, all communication pertaining to uniform should still be directed to your child’s Pastoral Care teacher, ideally by email or by supplying a handwritten note.

Organisation

Time management is a great quality of any successful student. Managing our time wisely helps us balance our daily lives and gives us more structure and moments to partake in the activities we enjoy. In order to encourage our students to maximise time in the classroom and manage their time effectively, we have requested all students access Student Services either before school, during recess, lunch or after school each day. Student Services is available for students to print, copy, access IT support, and to request a paracetamol or antihistamine.

Lost Property

Any named/labelled items of uniform sent to Student Services will be returned to your child. Students are also informed weekly, through SEQTA Notices, of all unnamed items of lost property.

Students Contacting Parents During the School Day

As per the College’s Respectful ICT Agreement signed by all students and parents at the commencement of the year, students are not permitted to use their phone or device to make or receive calls or send messages during the day. Any student who wishes to contact their parent to discuss any matter may only do so through Student Services.

A REMINDER 2020 school fees are due by Saturday 31 October 2020.
