Area Auditions
Area Auditions are Saturday, January 6, 2024 at The Woodlands High School. Students will meet at TMHS at 7:00am to drive together to TWHS. Breakfast will be cooked and provided for Area candidates to eat at TMHS together.
REGISTRATION PROCEDURE: Each candidate will go to the table designated for their section in order to register and receive an audition badge. The badge will indicate the singing order for the day. Students must verify the badge number by initialing the registration form. You must wear your badge at all times. Once a student has received a badge, no further contact is permitted with their director until the conclusion of the total audition. ALTERNATES - In the event an alternate must be called before 10 PM on Thursday night, the alternate must come from the region where the vacancy occurred.
AUDITION PROCEDURE: Students will receive the cuts for the audition following registration. After registration is closed, singers will be taken to the audition rooms to sing through the audition cuts twice. After the rehearsal of the cuts, students may ask any questions they might have at that time. From this point on there can be no further rehearsal of the cuts in any manner. Students may study silently; however, anyone who sings or plays the cuts may risk disqualification. Directors should make this clear to all students. Students will then return to the holding room where their audition number will be called. Students must listen carefully to numbers called and follow instructions as they are led through the audition. Once a student’s number is called, they will be escorted to the warm-up room where each student is allowed a five-minute warm-up. Students may vocalize, but the audition music may not be sung. After the warm-up period, students are taken directly to their audition rooms. Students will audition solo with recorded accompaniment in an order determined randomly by the computer program. At the conclusion of the first round, students will eat lunch before the sightreading audition begins. No director contact may be made. After lunch, the students will be escorted back to the holding area and given sightreading instructions. The holding room is not used prior to sightreading. Students will be called by number and escorted directly to the audition room. All students who have completed the sightreading round will be sequestered until the conclusion of the audition. Families will meet their student there once everyone is released at the conclusion of the auditions. No electronic devices may be used or accessed by a student participant until the auditions for the student’s section have been concluded. Failure to comply with this regulation may result in student disqualification. The list of non-allowable electronic devices includes, but is not limited to, phones, smart watches, electronic games, computers, cameras (within an audition room), and playback systems. The Contest Chair may establish a cell phone use area monitored by an adult contest official for the purpose of allowing a student to initiate a call.
JUDGING: A five-member judging panel will score each section. Judges will use two separate judging forms – one for each round of auditions (morning: literature cuts – afternoon: sightreading). Judges will remain at the audition site for the entire day and no changes will be made on any panel. Literature Round: Students will perform the three literature cuts in order announced at registration. There will be no verbal communication between the judging panel and the student. When finished with the third literature cut, please take your music and exit. Judges will not dismiss you. The singing round counts for 80% of the audition.
Sightreading Round: Students will sightread a melody written for the contest and sent from the TMEA state office. You will turn the folder over on the stand WHEN INSTRUCTED, hear the tonic triad and the starting pitch. Students will have a 30-second study period. You may study out loud or silently on your preferred method of sightreading. After 30 seconds, you will be instructed to “stop”. Then the tonic triad and starting pitch will be played. You will then sing the sightreading to be judged. When finished, turn the sightreading folder over and exit the room. Again, judges will not dismiss you. The sightreading round counts for 20% of the total audition score.
ALTERNATES: Should an alternate’s status change between now and January 6th, the director of record will be contacted and they will notify the student. If the director is unable to be reached, the student will be contacted directly by the Area F Chair or the TMEA office. No alternates will be called to audition after 10:00 PM on the Thursday (01/04/2024) before the audition. Alternates will only fill open audition slots if the opening is created by a vacancy in that alternate’s region. There will be NO ALTERNATES on site the day of the contest who has not been called prior to that day.
LUNCH: Lunch will be available on campus for students. Each student should bring money and is asked to support our host school. Please refrain from ordering/bringing in outside food as a group.
STUDENTS MAY NOT LEAVE THE CAMPUS FOR ANY REASON; THERE WILL BE NO CONTACT BETWEEN STUDENTS AND DIRECTORS ONCE THE STUDENTS RECEIVE THEIR BADGES AT REGISTRATION.
AUDITION RESULTS: Of the twenty students auditioning on each part, Soprano/Alto singers ranking #1-4 will be selected as members of the Texas All-State Mixed Choir. The next two treble singers (#5 & #6) in each section will be the 1st and 2nd alternates to the Mixed Choir respectively. Sopranos and altos ranked #5-10 will be selected as members of the Texas All-State Treble Choir. Treble singers ranked 11 and 12 will be 1st and 2nd alternates to the Treble Choir.
Of the twenty students auditioning on each part, tenor/bass singers ranking #1-5 will be selected as members of the Texas All-State Mixed Choir. Singers #6 & 7 will be 1st and 2nd alternates to the Mixed Choir respectively. Tenors and basses ranked #6-8 will be selected as members of the Texas All-State Tenor/Bass Choir. Tenors and basses ranked 9 and 10 will be 1st and 2nd alternates.
Following the conclusion of the auditions, directors will have time to verify results. Students will be contacted by their directors or have the opportunity to view the results following the verification period. Results will list all students in alphabetical order indicating selection to an All-State ensemble. Ranking will not be included.
ALL STATE CHOIR MEMBERS FEES: The All-State fee of $30 will be paid online. The Area/Region Chair will not be responsible for collecting All-State fees.
