Woodland Elementary Weekly Notes
Message From The Principal
Dear Woodland Families!
This year has been packed full of learning and excitement at Woodland Elementary School, and soon we will be wrapping up 2023 and heading into a new year. The energy for learning is strong and the development of our problem solvers and leaders is clear each day.
I often find myself “moving fast” and forgetting to pause and reflect on how many wonderful things happen each day. As a parent, I often feel like my own two kids have grown up in just a “blink of an eye.” As we wrap up 2023, I encourage all of us to reflect on how wonderful our children are. When I observe the learning, thinking, problem solving, and kindness each day at Woodland, I am constantly reminded about the leaders we are developing. They are sure to do amazing things when they enter the next phase of their learning.
December can be difficult for students to keep focussed and energized with their learning. They are excited about the holidays, busy with after school activities, and all looking forward to some time off with friends and families. We work hard at school to teach and learn right up to the final day before winter break. As we embark on these final weeks of 2023, we appreciate your role in engaging our kids at home. Reading and conversation are two of the most important things you can do to continue that learning. Thank you for constantly being such strong partners in our kids’ educational journey.
Recently, the Wisconsin School Report Cards were released for all schools in the state. I am proud to share that we again received the highest ranking of “Significantly Exceeds Expectations” and a score of 93.1. This is a testament to the amazing educators we have at Woodland. They are simply the best! A State Report Card like this is also not possible without the best students and parents around. Thank you to all of you, and congratulations to our school community on a job well done.
As we enter the holiday season, I want to thank our students, staff, parents, and community for all you do to make Woodland Elementary School a special place. As always, my door is open and I welcome you to stop by, email, or call anytime that you have questions, comments, or concerns.
Take care and happy holidays to you and your families!
Sincerely,
Timothy M. Doleysh, Ph.D.

Winter MAP Testing
Students in grades 2-4 will be taking the winter MAP tests after the holiday break. Students are tested in the areas of mathematics and language arts via a computer delivered adaptive test. Rather than measure based on grade level expectations, the tests measures continuous academic growth from fall to spring and from one year to the next. It is one of the many tools used to inform our instruction to meet your child’s needs. The winter MAP testing will take place in early January. Please refrain from making any appointments during this time, if at all possible. Please contact your child’s teacher with any questions.

Woodland Elementary Spelling Bee
On December 12th, nine third and fourth grade students at Woodland Elementary participated in the School Spelling Bee. Prior to this, all third and fourth grade students participated in a Classroom Level Bee; from there, ten spellers were chosen to move on to the School Spelling Bee. Congratulations to the winners: 4th grader Ivy Sousek (1st place) and 4th grader Jackson Paffel (2nd place). These students have been invited to participate in the Regional Spelling Bee, which will take place on February 14th, at J.R. Gerritts Middle School! At this level of the Bee, students will compete with other students from surrounding school districts in our region. We are excited for these students and their outstanding accomplishments!

Book Swap
Woodland Elementary will hold it's next book swap on Wednesday, December 20th. Your child can bring a book from home to swap for a book that is “new” to them. This is an optional activity.
Book Donations Needed
We are starting to get low on books, and as the holiday season approaches many of us are trying to make some space in our homes. Please consider donating gently used books to the Woodland book swap. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Please send books with your student on Wednesday, December 20 or drop them off in the office. Thank you for helping build a community of readers!

Happy Holidays, Families!
We are about halfway through December and many of the holidays are upon us, with this comes such joy and cheer! Students are keeping busy during this exciting season, whether practicing songs for our Holiday Sing, making festive arts and crafts, or giving back through service projects.
Keeping up our mental and emotional wellness is always important, and especially amidst the hustle and bustle that comes with this time of year. Here are some tips to help maintain positivity and manage any stress as we embrace the holiday fun:
Make time for self-care - This is a busy time of year for our kids, and it is just as busy for us adults (maybe even more busy). It is important to take care of ourselves so that we can take care of our children. Find some activities that nourish you like listening to music, taking a walk, taking a bath, reading a book, etc. Setting aside even 15 minutes a day for you can refresh your mind and spirit!
Practice gratitude - Remind your child about focusing on what we appreciate versus what we desire. Keep a gratitude journal or talk about gratitude at mealtime. Take time each day to name a few things you’re grateful for.
Lend a helping hand - Acts of kindness and service boost mood and self-esteem. With your child, find ways to safely help others in need during this season.
Please reach out if you have any concerns about your child’s emotional wellbeing or need additional support during this exciting, but sometimes anxious, time of year! And don’t forget to take care of yourself!
