A brief message from our School Administrator
Assistant Principal Message
SBAAM FAM!
Our WIN classes are in full effect! WIN , or What I Need classes are opportunities for our scholars to get the necessary support in ELA and/or math. The classes are configured by scholar performance on iReady beginning of year assessments, and results of NYS ELA and Math Exams. Through analysis of this data with our Instructional Leadership/Assessment Team (ILAT), we place scholars in their appropriate classes. These differentiated groupings are based on skill level, rather than grade. This allows for scholars to learn with scholars of similar skill set and develop a stronger understanding of the content.
Scholars in our tier 2 sections will receive 2 days of ELA intervention and/or enrichment, and 2 days of math intervention and/or enrichment. Scholars in our tier 3 sections will receive 4 days of intensive ELA intervention and/or enrichment, or 4 days of math intervention and/or enrichment.
These classes are flexible, and as such, when our scholars demonstrate evidence of significant change (increase or decrease) in a given grouping, we will change scholars to the class which is most appropriate to their current level of understanding.
SBAAM is committed to one of priorities for this year, which is to create authentic and meaningful opportunities for scholars. WIN classes is just one example of this commitment. If you want to learn more about these classes, please feel free to reach out to me at Sbrock@sbaam296.org.

8th Grade updates!
Good afternoon SBAAM families,
I hope this email finds you well. I want to share a few important notes as you continue exploring high schools through your MySchools account (myschools.nyc).
- The registration deadline for the SHSAT exam, required for applying to the 8 specialized high schools (Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Latin School, Brooklyn Technical High School, High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College, High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, Staten Island Technical High School, Stuyvesant High School), is November 4th. Students who sign up will take the exam at SBAAM on November 17th.
- Please use this link (https://www.myschools.nyc/en/calendar/) to see a calendar that indicates which high schools have upcoming open houses, including dates, times and if it is in-person or virtual. As you explore particular schools, you can look up if and when those schools are holding open houses. Please see this list for a few other upcoming open houses.
· In school, we will be pushing into classrooms this week and next with the laptop cart to help students explore high schools and create their lists. At school, we will be using this website (https://www.myschools.nyc/en/schools/high-school/), which does not require them to log in with your email address. Please check in with your child in the coming days to see their list and find some time to explore high schools together.
· On November 4th, SBAAM will be holding our annual HS fair! We will be hosting high school representatives from around the city as they introduce themselves to our 8th graders and discuss the unique opportunities their schools provide. Please make sure that your 8th grader is in school that day!
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Weekly Recipe!
Ingredients
For the stir-fry sauce
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 cup orange juice
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
For the dish
- 1 pork tenderloin (1 pound), cut into thin strips
- 1 tablespoon canola oil (or other flavorless oil that can handle high heat, like peanut)
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 1/4 pound fresh snow peas
- 1/2 sweet red pepper, julienned
- Hot cooked rice
- Optional: Chopped green onion and sesame seeds
Instructions
Step 1: Make the stir-fry sauce
Your sauce melds together all the different flavors and textures of the protein and vegetables in the stir-fry. For this recipe, the sauce is sweet and tangy.
In a small bowl, combine cornstarch, orange juice, soy sauce, garlic and ginger until smooth; set aside.
Step 2: Sear the meat
The meat or protein cooks first, seasoning the fat in the skillet. In a large skillet or wok, stir-fry pork in oil until lightly browned, 5 minutes; drain.
Step 3: Toss in the vegetables
Whatever veggies you’re using go in next. Whatever you’re using, make sure to cut everything to the same size.
Here, add the onion, peas and red pepper; cook and stir until crisp-tender, 3-5 minutes.
Step 4: Add the sauce
Cooking the sauce for a few minutes allows it to thicken up. Stir orange juice mixture and add to the pan. Bring to a boil; cook and stir until thickened, about 2 minutes.
Step 5: Serve with a carb of your choice
Stir-fries are so full of flavor, they’re usually served on top of a plain base, which absorbs flavor from the sauce. We like to serve this with rice, rice noodles, zoodles or steamed vegetables.
Garnish with green onion and sesame seeds, if desired.
Is Stir-Fry Healthy?
In general, stir-fry is healthy, since the speedy, high heat cooking doesn’t require much oil or fat. Plus, most stir-fries rely on lean meat or proteins, like chicken, tofu or lean steak. To make it even healthier, use a whole grain or vegetable base rather than white rice.
