Key News for Explorer Families
As you can imagine, kicking off our week on Monday with our book character parade set the stage for an energetic week. It gave me joy to see the smiles on the students faces as they shared their books that provided the inspiration for their costume choices. We have very creative students! I was also delighted with the creativity of our Northwood staff as they participated in book character day too.
Our clocks will all ‘fall back’ Sunday morning. Don’t forget to reset the wall and kitchen clocks so things run smoothly on Monday. This is also a good time to remind families of the importance of getting students to school on time. There are days where the carpool line is long, but no matter road or weather circumstances, our school day always starts at 7:40 am. We appreciate parents help in making sure our students arrive safely and on time.
Tuesday, November 8th is Election Day and therefore a remote learning day for students. Grade levels will send out the details for the day.
We are thrilled to bring back the Thanksgiving Feast at Northwood. Our cafeteria manager, Kara Flood, and her café team members are delighted to invite our families to enjoy a holiday feast on Wednesday, November 16 or Thursday, November 17. Grade levels will be split between the two dates so that each grade will be able to have a slightly longer lunch time. An official invitation was sent home in backpacks yesterday. We’ve also included the information below and it can be accessed on our website. I will send a separate communication specific to feast details in the coming weeks.
As always, enjoy this weekend.
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker

Second Grade Explorers
October was an outstanding month in Second Grade! The highlight of the month was definitely Pumpkin Math. The children had so much fun working together and having parent volunteers come in. During science, the children learned all about force and motion through some exciting investigations. This week, they are collaborating and building roller coasters to demonstrate how gravity acts on a marble. Next week, we will begin our social studies unit on Creek and Cherokee Native Americans. We’re all very excited about our upcoming field trip to the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Students are going to love learning about how our early ancestors' ways helped shape our beautiful state of Georgia.

3rd Grade Pollution Solution
We went to the science lab to complete a pollution activity. Rivers are a vital water source, home to wildlife, a means of transportation, and more. As the numbers and sizes of our communities have increased over time, the health of our rivers has suffered. Sewage, agricultural runoff, and industrial wastes are just some of the pollutants that find their way into our rivers. This activity demonstrated that, just as we each contribute to the problem, we must also be part of the solution!

Buzzer Readers is Back!
The Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball team would like to invite your child to participate in their annual “Buzzer Readers” reading program. Buzzer Readers is an initiative to promote and encourage children to learn through reading. All elementary and middle school students from schools in Metro Atlanta are eligible to participate.
Rules:
Each child will record the number of minutes read each day during the designated one-month period (October 24 - November 22). This year we will be utilizing Beanstack. Sign into your account (Classlink-->E-Library-->Beanstack) and log your minutes read. In addition to books, newspapers and magazines will also count.
- Parents may read to their children; however, group reading in a classroom setting is not to be counted.
- The name of the book, along with author, is requested to provide information to the teacher as to the types of books the children are reading at home.
- Please ensure the books are geared to help the children learn and grow. Ebooks/Nooks or books coming from a source provided from the school (i.e. library) are permitted.
Awards:
- All students who participate in the program will receive a Georgia Tech bookmark and free admission to a Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball game against an ACC Opponent (TBD in January/February 2023). Participants are also eligible for other prizes such as autographed memorabilia.
- In addition, the top classes with the most minutes read will receive a visit from the Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball team in the spring semester.
Prizes will be awarded for the following categories:
- Highest School Total (Elementary and Middle School)
- Highest Class Total from Each Grade
- Highest Individual Total (Elementary and Middle School)
