RULH Third Graders Enjoy Studying Fictional Books
Third grade language arts students recently studied point of view and perspective in fictional writing. The students were surprised to learn how different the exact same story can be when it is told by a different character. Could Cinderella actually have been annoying? Maybe the big bad wolf wasn’t so bad after all? The students looked at the text evidence closely and developed their own point of view. Comparing and contrasting these different perspectives helped the students to see things from other points of view. Could their friend have actually meant something different by their comment? All of this reinforced their own perspective on learning. Learning is fun!
RULH Kindergartners Celebrate the 100th Day of School
On Tuesday, February 6th, RULH Elementary celebrated the 100th day of school. The kindergarten students and teachers anticipated this celebration and literally counted down the days to commemorate this event. Students and families collected 100 items to present in class and the teachers planned special activities. Not only is counting to 100 an Ohio Learning Standard for kindergarten, it's also being used as a student goal setting measure. The students and staff enjoyed celebrating this special day!
Sixth Grade Science Classes Study Chemical and Physical Matter
Sixth grade science students recently finished a physical science unit. The unit included lab activities that taught about chemical change and physical change in matter. Students discovered that with a physical change in matter the properties are the same but in a different shape or form. With a chemical change in matter there is a change in at least one or more properties.
The first experiment they conducted started with milk, vinegar and baking soda. The end result was a form of Elmer’s glue! The students learned they could not return the matter to its original state due to the chemical change. The second lab activity started with sodium polyacrylate and water. The students made artificial “snow” as seen in movies! Mrs. Gray showed the students the chemical formula of water plus polyacrylate. Student saw that nothing was lost and nothing was gained (which was an example of a physical change).
The final lab experiment was making popcorn! They started with the corn seeds then added heat which caused the corn to turn inside out! The popcorn had the same properties it started with just in a different form. That was an example of a physical change in matter. The end result of the different lab activities was centered around the energy with each chemical or physical change. The students learned that with both a chemical change or a physical change in matter, there is always a change in energy. Way to learn Blue Jays!
