SCHOLARSHIP TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
REFERENCES AND REFERENCE LETTERS
- Always ASK for permission to use someone as a reference first.
- Never assume or put down someone’s name without checking first.
Think carefully about who you are asking:
- Have they known you for a long time?
- Are they someone who you have interacted with positively? Can they speak highly of you?
- If your scholarship is in a certain subject area, can you ask someone who has known you in that class/subject/environment?
- DOES your SCHOLARSHIP REQUIRE SOMEONE in a SPECIFIC ROLE?
- You should always allow at least 2 WEEKS for your reference to write you a strong reference letter.
- MAKE IT AS EASY AS POSSIBLE FOR YOUR REFERENCE!
- Provide your reference with as many details as possible about your academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, leadership, and volunteer opportunities.
- Fill out the ‘JHSS Student Profile’ page (LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS NEWSLETTER) and give this to your referee so they can tailor their reference letter.
- Read the instructions carefully on each scholarship application!!!
- Is there a length requirement?
- Specified format? (i.e. double-spaced with a digital signature.)
- *If there is specific criteria – LET YOUR REFEREE know!* (It is not your referee’s job to look up your scholarship criteria.)
- Confirm if you need to send an online PDF reference letter or a hard copy letter inside an envelope.
- Remember to say “thank you” and update your reference if you are successful.
CRAFTING YOUR STORY
Your Story
- If asked, “Why do you deserve this scholarship?” make your story stand out! Include:

- Tailor your responses for EACH scholarship
- Research the organization prior to applying (if applying to a BCSPCA scholarship what might you consider talking about?)
- Use SPECIFIC and concrete examples
- Always emphasize the positives!
Your Story: The STAR METHOD
S — Situation (who, what, when, where)
T — Task (your objective or role)
A — Actions (what you did, how you did it,
skills you used)
