The Buzz at Westbrook School
December 2, 2022
From the Principal...
Dear Westbrook Families,
I hope everyone had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving break. It is hard to believe we only have three weeks until our next holiday break. It will be a busy few weeks of learning and engaging seasonal activities at Westbrook.
In District 57, we take the prevention of bullying very seriously. Bullying is intentional physical, verbal, or social aggression. It’s often repeated over time and occurs when there’s a real or perceived power imbalance. Kindergarten through 8th-grade students participate in classroom meetings to build classroom community and provide strategies for students to prevent/handle potential bullying situations. This is done, in part, using the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit. These instructional materials allow students to share their feelings and opinions, suggest solutions, and learn to follow the rules and handle bullying situations appropriately. It also builds class community and cohesiveness and recognizes the achievements and successes of the class as a whole.
We encourage any student or parent aware of a potential bullying situation to report the issue immediately to a staff member. This report will initiate an investigation. Whether or not the issue is found to be bullying, any behavior that does not follow school expectations will be addressed. We want all students to feel safe and comfortable at school and are committed to removing barriers that prevent this for individual students or groups of students. Library News from Mrs. Capra
Create a Gingerbread Friend
(shape coming home today)
Run, run as fast as you can & join the fun!
We are reading different versions of the gingerbread stories in the LRC this month. This week, in addition to a traditional version, we read Gingerbread Man Loose in the School by Laura Murray and went on a scavenger hunt through the library.
We'd like to decorate the LRC with gingerbread friends based on other book characters. As a family, you can decorate it as one of your child’s favorite characters.
Start turning them in as soon as they are completed so we can hang them up in the LRC during December. Have fun!
This activity is completely optional!
Before you submit the gingerbread friend, please put your child’s name and teacher’s name (AM or PM for kindergarten) on the back so we can return it to them after display. Please include the book character's name on the back too!
