Neshaminy Update
Neshaminy School District / February 2023
gaming is academic in this NHS class
Playing games on a smart phone is usually frowned upon during class time. But for one course at Neshaminy HS, the students not only play games but create them as well. Art teacher Katie Tubolino's Game Design class offers her students the opportunity to develop their own RPG (role-playing games). The students are learning how to map out virtual worlds and create stories within their games.
Each RPG game has to have a main character, at least six levels (such as different rooms or an outside setting), a mission, and dialogue between characters. Throughout the year, students explore and create different types of games using several creation platforms such as Scratch, GDevelop, Flowlab and GameFront.
"They love it, they love the RPG games," said Ms. Tubolino. "They want more of it, so I told them they will do an end-of-the-year game where they can pick one of the platforms that we learned."
While the emphasis of the class is on artistic design, creating the games requires a variety of skills such as storytelling, coding, and even math to map out virtual spaces. "I make sure that the games are well-planned, " she said. "We definitely touch on other areas such as science and the technology."
The students test and share the games they create on a public RPG website using QR codes (two examples below). The games open in the phone's browser and do not require a special app or software to enjoy. Try them out!
Carl Sandburg MS students host debut episode of Youth Coalition podcast
The Neshaminy Coalition for Youth (NC4Y), a community-based group devoted to promoting healthy lifestyles and positive choices for young people, has announced the debut of a new podcast series, "Giving Youth a Voice." The plan is to have Neshaminy students host each episode, generate topics that are of interest to them and find community leaders and professionals that can answer their questions.
In the first episode, students from the Carl Sandburg MS SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Club interviewed School Resource Officer Missy Robison and asked her questions submitted by the student body. They were interested in how Officer Robison became a police officer, what is considered self-defense in Pennsylvania, how car chases are conducted and what are the limits, and what she considered a career highlight (spoiler alert: she described giving CPR to a vendor at Oxford Valley Mall which saved his life).
An additional episode will be posted in mid-March, and one episode per month after that. The podcast can be found at the website link below and on most major podcast apps and websites. The project is made possible by funding through the Bucks County Drug & Alcohol Commission, Inc.
Facilities projects move forward
New turf playing surface at the Neshaminy HS softball field.
As spring approaches, three major facilities projects at Neshaminy are quickly moving forward:
NESHAMINY HS ATHLETIC FIELDS PROJECT
The most visible of these is the athletic fields project at Neshaminy High School. Installation of the bright turf playing surface on the baseball field is complete, and crews have laid down the surface for the softball field behind the school as well. Stone grading on the tennis courts is under way, and installation of the structure for the new 8-lane track at the stadium has started. Support pads are being installed for the bleachers at the baseball and softball fields.
Demolition of the bleachers at Harry E. Franks Stadium was completed a week ahead of schedule. Next up will be installation of the foundation for the new bleachers. The bleachers themselves are scheduled to be delivered in April and will be installed thereafter. Work is also under way to build the base for a new scoreboard with a video screen, which will be installed later in the spring. Site preparation and installation of the new turf field will follow. The plan is to have the new field in place by the graduation ceremony in June, conditions permitting. The concrete base for the track should be ready at that point, but the track surface itself won't be completed until after the end of the school year.
A bid request for construction of the new field house and pavilion at the stadium entrance has been issued, and pending acceptance of a bid, work could begin this summer and be completed in spring, 2024.
Some changes to the electrical conduit work needed to operate the stadium lights, the new press box and scoreboard were required since the Field House is not expected to be completed by the start of the fall sports season. The original plans called for all stadium electrical service to be routed through the Field House.
The multi-purpose field behind the stadium has been graded. It will need several weeks to dry out and settle, after which a stone base will be installed along with water drainage systems, fencing, curbing and a scoreboard.
NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AT MAPLE POINT
Preliminary site preparation work has started for the new elementary school building planned for the Maple Point property. Work on the expanded parking lot to serve the new building is planned for this summer. Permit reviews with Middletown Township are under way, and once approved construction can begin. Completion is expected in the summer of 2024 with a projected opening date at the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
A preliminary discussion of possible names for the new elementary school is taking place in Facilities and Planning Committee meetings. Among the suggestions were Luxembourg Elementary, Core Creek Elementary or Maple Point Elementary. None of these generated much support and the discussion will continue at future meetings.
CLASSROOM ADDITION AT POQUESSING
A project to add four classrooms at Poquessing Middle School will be put out to bid this April. The 4,725 square foot, one-story addition will be added to the area between Poquessing and Joseph Ferderbar ES. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the summer in 2024.
School Board Update

- The Board heard an explanation from Business Administrator Don Irwin of the possibility of refinancing $44 million worth of 2015 Series A and Series C bond issues which are eligible for refinancing in July, 2023. - Mr. Irwin also updated the Board on the progress of the Neshaminy HS Fields Project (see article above).
- Discussion of the progress of the budget process for the 2023-2024 school year. This was discussed at the Business Operations Committee meeting on January 26. At that meeting the Initial Budget Presentation was delivered and can be viewed here. This process will continue at the next Business Operations Committee meeting on March 29.

Thank you to the staff and students in the Schweitzer community for donating to the American Heart Association (AHA) for research and helping take action by uniting to prevent heart disease and stroke. Together, we can fight the No. 1 killer of women-cardiovascular disease. Albert Schweitzer students and staff wore RED to show support and to collect donations. The Albert Schweitzer community raised $400 to donate to the American Heart Association!
Schweitzer zoo pitch nets a set of desk pets
In January, Bret Wells' first-grade class at Albert Schweitzer ES discussed making the school's courtyard into a zoo. The class wrote persuasive letters to Michelle Burkholder, the District's Director of Elementary Education about their idea. While Ms Burkholder enjoyed every page, putting a live zoo in the courtyard was simply not a practical matter for a school.
On February 17, Mrs. Burkholder and her administrative assistant, Mrs. Rooney surprised the class with something just as good and much easier to clean up. The two brought a Desk Pet for each child along with adoption papers. The children were thrilled for this responsibility, and thanked them both for the visit and gift!
Tawanka classes 3-D print patriotic art

In the photo above Madison Conway's kindergarten class at Tawanka ES poses with their 100-day costumes and at right is some more 100 day fun at Hoover ES.

On January 30, eighth-graders at Carl Sandburg MS enjoyed an informative presentation about college and career readiness from Bucks County Community College.
