Message From the Principal
I am so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. - LM Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables
This is one of my favorite quotes, and every year in October, I am reminded why! I love the crispness in the air, the school buses back on the road, and the leaves changing colors - soon to fall from late autumn and/or early winter storms! This is also some of my favorite times in schools. I love this time because our routines are beginning to come together, classroom connections are solidly forming, and we really begin to really see our students growing! I have enjoyed walking through classrooms and meeting kids so much in the past weeks, and I am looking forward to some designated times to meet families.
I truly hope you are doing well, and feel free to reach out if you have questions, comments, and/or needs.
Happy October!
Amanda Bethune
Principal

Outdoor School!
We are SO excited to have our 6th graders attending Outdoor School! We know that there could be anxieties and/or questions surrounding this experience. Our sixth grade teachers will be providing an informational parent meeting on Thursday, October 20th at 6:30 pm over Google Meet.

So many things are going well! I appreciate your patience and understanding as we get kids in and out of school! Just a few important reminders to keep your child(ren) safe:
Please avoid stopping along the sidewalk and getting out! We need to keep traffic moving. Feel free to circle once. If needed, park and walk up to get your child.
We have kids walking in the parking lot without adults. We will not let kids go across the parking lot to you. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but we want your child safe!
Please do not park in the handicap spaces by the portables for drop off or pick up.
After School Club:
STEAM Club
Nature STEAM Club for 4th and 5th grades Thursdays October 20-November 3, 2022 from 2:05 to 4:15. Ms. Miller sent home forms, and the club will begin this Thursday. The first two sessions will include walks to the stream and activities in the field. There will be more clubs for additional grades throughout the school year. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Miller, millerj@hsd.k12.or.usCommunication
We always welcome communication about your child! We love the good kind, but we also know that sometimes you have important information, and we need to respond to incidents reported to you by your student.
Just a few reminders about communicating with staff:
Staff typically do not respond between the hours of 3:15 PM - 7:15 AM, or on weekends.
Staff have a variety of planning times throughout the day, and sometimes they are able to respond during that time. Outside of that time, they are teaching and will likely not receive emails until their planning time, or after school. Please give our office a call at 503-844-1390 if you have an urgent message.
There is a 24 hour turnaround time for an email or call. Often, we are doing some pre-work (interviewing kids or speaking to staff members), prior to calling you back. At times, there could be several calls they need to return.
Meeting the Principal
Early in the morning, I am working with students, filling unexpected staff absences, getting important news to staff, and preparing to make our morning announcement to students. Meeting with families is a very high priority, but this timeframe is challenging. Feel free to call our office and make an appointment, and I am happy to set up a time to meet with you! Thank you so much for understanding.

Attendance
Attendance Works Link - Regular attendance is so important! We miss your child when they are gone, and they are missing out on valuable learning opportunities. There are many studies in the research section of this website that outline just how important regular attendance is.
Here is a great flier (link) that outlines some best practices around attendance. If you need any support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
Remember, nine absences per year (or less) is best!
Staff Highlight - Paola Gust Cordova - Our AMAZING Liaison!
Paola’s role at Butternut Creek Elementary is to provide each family with virtual, as well as face-to-face, assistance. She facilitates parent-to-school communication, community agency referrals, and encourages family participation. We have many great events and activities at Butternut, and throughout the Hillsboro School District. She works to make sure you are aware of those events and can make the most of what they have to offer. Paola works daily from 9AM - 6PM. One of her talents is that she speaks Spanish! She also attends our PTC meetings. Read more from her here!
If you would like to be added to a text group receiving important information in Spanish about Butternut Creek Elementary School, please text/call Paola at 971-208-5653. Paola’s email is gustcorp@hsd.k12.or.us

PTC Events
Hello Butternut Families!
The PTC is excited to kick-off our first fundraiser of the year! If you don’t know who we are or what we do, please read the enclosed Mission Statement, visit us on Facebook, on the school’s web page, or simply email us at butternutcreekptcc@gmail.com!
We are starting the year by raising money for our Teacher’s Supplemental Experience Fund. This fund allows us to support experiences our teachers wish to provide for our students, that are not provided by the district, and that come at an additional cost. Last year we were able to complete a school beautification mural, celebrate our teachers, and fund Cultural Night. This year we’ve already been able to help provide additional scholastic classroom materials and cognitive-behavioral therapy tools.
Please be sure to check your student’s backpacks tonight because you will find the informational packet for the fundraisers!
We have two fundraisers this Fall, wreaths and a “No-Time-For-This” Fundraiser!
You can choose to participate in one or both to help raise the money.
Once you receive your packet you can start selling immediately. 😊
Please return the packets and all money to the school no later than Thursday, November 3rd.
An ice cream party will be provided for the class with the most sales.
KEY DATES AND DETAILS:
- Put your students first and last name and Teacher’s name on the order form.
- Make all checks and money orders payable to Butternut Creek Elementary.
- Collect money as you collect orders. Money must be returned with order forms.

¡Hola familias Butternut!
