McKay High School Newsletter
November 20 -- December 1
Message from the Admin Team
This week brings us to a well deserved break. Students, staff, and families have all spent the Fall working hard to achieve success. We would like to thank all of those groups for what they do day in and day out. As we head into another month of the school year the admin team at McKay High School would like to express our appreciation. Enjoy the extra time away and we look forward to our future success.

Fall Sports Coming to a Close
Last weekend brought the end of our fall sports. Throughout the first part of the year McKay Student Athletes competed to represent our school community. There were many victories as well as some losses. Our Boys Soccer team progressed into the second round of the 5A playoffs this season before suffering a loss at the hands of LaSalle High School. Our Boys Football program continued their improvement this season, earning a first round matchup versus Hillsboro High. Although these seasons didn't end the way the teams would have liked we know that the seasons were worth the effort.
Winter Sports began this past week with many sports starting their seasons. This is a reminder that our Student Athletes experience much more success in the classroom when they are engaged and active. At McKay we graduate up 98% of our student athletes. We would like to wish all of our winter sports athletes and families the best of luck.
This past Saturday November 18 we celebrated the first Royal Scots Day in the city of Salem. Last year this award was bestowed upon the community following our Boys Soccer State Championship. It serves as another reminder of the success that we are capable of at our school
Speech and Debate Update:
This past Saturday, the Royal Scots Speech and Debate Team attended the Silverton Invitational at SHS. We brought a team of six, which is the largest team we have entered in competition since restoring the team after COVID. Two returning seniors, Seth Matheny and Izaak De Jesus, joined four new team members ranging from Freshmen to Seniors, and entered four events.
Izaak once again performed his After Dinner Speech about the role of elders in our lives and how their stories can impact us. He came in 3rd and accordingly received an award. Our next tournament is December 2 at Clackamas. There is a distinct possibility and likelihood that we will be bringing a team of 13 to that event. This means I will need to bring as many a four judges along to cover our entries. An extra shout out to Mr. Blommendahl for his continued effort.
Education Support Professionals Day
Extra shout out to Mr. Feskens Culinary students who helped to prepare a special treat to celebrate Education Support Professional Day this past week.
Mr. Warner's Environmental Science Classroom
The McKay AP Environmental Science class was recently able to attend the Salmon Watch Field Trip in Gates, OR on the Santiam river. Are you able to include the infographic I made and included on this email on the McKay Newsletter? We got to spend the day learning about the Santiam watershed, salmon habitat and aquatic macroinvertebrates. Thanks to Marion Soil and Water Conservation District for hosting and funding our trip.
