Royal Moments

In the month of March, members of the Social-Emotional Learning Committee participated in a professional learning event through Questar III BOCES. The book, Maslow Before Bloom: Human Needs Before Academics, provides real life stories, current research, hand-on strategies, and a new problem solving approach that is easy to implement, and proven effective.

Throughout the book study sessions, eight members of the Gardner-Dickinson faculty read about and participated in discussions about basic student needs as they relate to academic achievement. The book served as an important reminder that all behavior is a form of communication. It provided insights related to relationship building, empathy, and self-care.

The final Book Study Session included an open Q&A with the book's author, Dr. Bryan Pearlman. Dr. Pearlman is an author, veteran teacher, administrator, licensed mental health therapist, keynote speaker, and adjunct professor. He helped the group discuss how to help and support students.

Since the book study, the SEL Committee at Gardner-Dickinson has continued its commitment and focus with Pearlman's basic philosophic approach in mind.

Naming and sharing about feelings is an important part of Social-Emotional Learning. Kindergarteners journal about the feeling of "pride" and meet NYS Social-Emotional Goal #1: Develop self-awareness and self-management skills essential to success in school and in life.

In the last issue of ROYAL MOMENTS, the nomination form garnered several responses about faculty, staff, and others who go "above and beyond" for students. Here's what was said about School Secretary, Kathy Fazioli:

"Kathy is the best! She is the first to help any student or parent with any issue. I have seen her personally console struggling children, help new parents, or any parent with information, and she is always the first person to lend a hand." - Nominated on April 26th, 2022
