Dig into Digital: Focus on H5P
We, teachers of English as Foreign Language in K-12 in Israel, face many challenges when introducing our pupils to the Dig into Digital Moodle courses. One way of smoothing our path towards an enjoyable use of these courses is by understanding the digital tools used in them. One of these tools is H5P (H5P is an abbreviation for HTML5 Package).
The focus of this week's "Teach with Moodle Templates" Smore newsletter is on the use of H5P activities in the different courses. I have picked several examples. Please note that you will not see examples from all the courses simply because the ones that appear cover most H5P use in any Dig into Digital Moodle course.
I hope my colleagues are engaged when they understand the digital aspects of the Moodle courses better. I also hope I can whet your appetite for the Dig into Digital courses.
Happy Moodling!

H5P Presentations
"Presentations" is "a free HTML5-based presentation content type which allows users to add multiple choice questions, fill in the blanks, text, and other types of interactions to their presentations using only a web browser" .
Course presentations consist of slides with multimedia, text, and many different types of interactions like interactive summaries, multiple choice questions and interactive videos. Learners can experience new interactive learning material and test their knowledge and memory in Course Presentations. As always with H5P, content is editable in web browsers, and the Course Presentation activity type includes a WYSIWYG drag and drop based authoring tool.
A typical use of the Course Presentation activity is to use a few slides to introduce a subject and follow these with a few more slides in which the user’s knowledge is tested.
H5P Flashcards
The Flashcards content type is a set of cards containing a picture on one side of the card and a corresponding text on the other side. The learner is asked to type a word or expression corresponding to the picture, before turning the card over and revealing the correct answer.
Flashcards can be used as a drill to help learners memorize words, expressions, or sentences. Typical Flashcards provide a prompt on one side of the card, and an answer on the other side. In H5P Flashcards, pictures are used as the prompt. If you are looking for Flashcards with text prompts, take a look at the Dialog cards content type.
Flashcards are often used in language learning for drilling words and expressions. Flashcards can also be used to present math problems or help learners remember facts such as historical dates, formulas, or names.
H5P Drag and Drop
The Drag and drop content type allows learners to drag a piece of text or an image and drop it on one or more corresponding dropzones.
rag and drop enables the learner to associate two or more elements and to make logical connections in a visual way. Here are some examples:
Group elements that belong together or have something in common
Match an object with another object
Put elements in the correct order
Place elements at a correct position
Drag and drop can be used to test the learner's knowledge on a given topic as a variation to Multichoice questions. Drag and drop can be used stand-alone or they can be included in Question sets, Interactive Videos or Presentations. Either way, they are created in the same way.
H5P Interactive Video
The Interactive video content type allows you to add interactions on top of video clips. Interactions such as images, elaborating text, links and quizzes pop up while the learner watches the video.
H5P Image Hotspots
The Image hotspots content type allows you to place an overlay of hotspots on images and graphics. The user presses the hotspots to reveal an associated text.
H5P Crossword
A free crossword tool with optional audio clues or video clues
H5P Memory Game
Memory game content type allows authors to add their own images (and optional text) to a memory game. To play the game, users search for image pairs, which will display a specified text message once a matching pair has been found.
When to use Memory games
You can use memory games in any type of exercise that requires the learner to match two images.
There are several memory game options available:
Matching two same images,
Matching two related images (For example, country flag with a city, an animal with its habitat etc.),
Adding sound to represent each image,
Displaying feedback per pair when a match has been made and
Customizing a look and feel of the game by changing colors or adding a background image.
H5P Dialog Cards
H5P Dialog Cards is a "free HTML5 based content type allowing authors to create great language learning resources with H5P."
Description
Dialog cards can be used as a drill to help learners memorize words, expressions or sentences. On the front of the card, there's a hint for a word or expression. By turning the card the learner reveals a corresponding word or expression.
Dialog cards can be used in language learning, to present math problems or help learners remember facts such as historical events, formulas or names.

Why H5P?
I'm interested in H5P because I teach e-learning for languages at university, I like the open source philosophy of H5P, and it's the best e-learning content tool I've used to date.
All the Dig into Digital courses contain H5P activities.
H5P makes it easy to create, share and reuse content. H5P empowers everyone to create rich and interactive web experiences more efficiently .
H5P can be used to teach, allow practice and assess. On the Dig into Digital courses, H5P is used widely to allow pupils to practice. It is NOT used to assess (and grades are NOT recorded on the Moodle Gradebook)
