Postural Screening for 9th grade students will take place April 10-14, 2023
Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L. c.71, s57) require that all public school students in grades five through nine be screened annually for the early detection of spinal problems.
The purpose of this screening program is to identify possible curvature of the spine in children. The screening test is very simple and can be performed in less than one minute. The screening consists of observations of the students back when standing and bending forward and will be conducted by a registered nurse. You will be contacted if there is any reason that warrants follow up by your child’s health care provider.
Postural screening for ninth grade students will take place in addition to SBIRT screening during the week of April 10th. All students will be screened individually in a private setting in the health office. The entire back must be visible during the screening process. All students are asked to remove their shirts. Females should wear a bra or halter top to permit more accurate observation of the back. If students do not have the type of clothing that permits observation of the back, a notice will be sent to parents/guardians that screening was not completed. Follow up should be done with the student’s health care provider with documentation submitted to the school nurse.
If you choose not to have your child participate in the Postural Screening Program, please email cdufault@monomoy.edu or ssears@monomoy.edu prior to April 3, 2023. Please then follow up by ensuring that a current physical with postural screening is on file in the nurse's office.
Please feel free to contact your school nurses with any questions about postural screening.
Healthy regards,
Cheryl Dufault BSN, RN, NCSN

SHARK SHOUTOUTS
- Many thanks to Denise Creedon for creating an amazing cake for the cast, crew, and pit band of the musical 9 to 5. She is kind, creative, and an incredibly talented baker! The drama department sends all their thanks and love for this creative confection. -Mrs. Rachel Barnes
- When a community member reached out to bring over several boxes and bags of clothing for the 351 Clothing Drive, their donation stuffed several boxes and bags full! When their pick-up truck pulled up to MRHS, they clearly could use some help unloading. A huge Shark Shout Out to the ready and able helpers who were eager to assist! The boxes and bags were no challenge for Charlotte Mahoney and Xevi Pina Parker who had the truck unloaded in a matter of minutes. Thank you for your kindness, willingness and ableness! MRHS appreciates you! -Mrs. Janet Ferro
- The HES PTO thanks the many high school volunteers who helped out at the Shamrock Shimmy on Saturday - we couldn't have done it without them! The volunteers were: Maya Jones, Emily Brophy, Abby Martin, Finn Dyer, Annalise Langelier, Sally Watson, Yu Ying Zou, Julia Brown, Marco-Dean Hart, Olivia Ferer, Riley Vath, Abbey Crownshaw, Kaelyn Ellis, Lilly Lagreze, and Nicolai Robbins. ~The Harwich Elementary PTO
Field trip to 1st Annual Massachusetts Educators Rising Conference
Ms. Armstrong, Mrs. Ginnetty, and Mr. Sliney chaperoned students to the 1st Annual Massachusetts Educators Rising Conference hosted at UMASS Lowell. Seven students departed Monomoy on March 23 at 5:30 AM! Attendees were able to tour UMASS Lowell as well as participate in a few workshops - Becoming Your Own Teacher and Mindset of an Educator. They listened to an amazing keynote speaker who shared his story of how teachers shaped and changed his life. It was a really inspiring day and for many of our students, their first official college visit.
Thank you for Mrs. Armstrong for planning this day - it was no easy feat to get this organized as well as to get students to commit to a 5:30 AM departure time.
Walden Pond 2023
Mr. Smeltzer’s Latin III class made a memorable trek out to Walden Pond and North Bridge in Concord, Ma, on Thursday, March 23, 2022. The students were analyzing and drawing attention to Thoreau’s ideas as they relate to the philosophy of Roman Stoicism. The purpose of the trip was to further explore the ways in which Henry David Thoreau related the idea of carpe diem into his own life at the pond. Many students commented on the natural beauty of the pond and Thoreau’s advice to live life deliberately.
