Leading and Learning: CORE VALUES
Social Conscience
I can listen to all opinions and be open to other perspectives.
I believe much of the divisiveness that occurs in politics and society is because we are not willing to listen to all opinions, nor do we often allow ourselves to be open to others' perspectives. If we are not willing to listen and understand, then we should not be allowed to talk and explain. When other people's opinions are different from mine, my first step must be to listen and understand. I may still disagree, but disagreement does not mean I cannot lead with understanding. If we want to change, we must begin with being open to others' perspectives...that is the only way we will find common ground to get the work done.
Cardinal Recognitions:
Thank you to:
- Jorie DePalma and RDM for making this crazy year one where we could still support Riley Hospital. #FTK
- Our School Counseling Office for organizing the AP testing that will start next week.
Congratulations to this year's STARS. And a big thank you to Vivian Leach for all her efforts to organize this event so we are able to recognize our students and staff!
Grateful Friday Challenge
Well, here we are...Friday… at least that is what the calendar is telling me. This is an exciting Friday. It is the last school day in April and then we have made it to May in the craziest school year we have ever experienced. I know we all have been stressed, anxious, and slightly overwhelmed. But, I also know we have felt a little more normal this month with the majority of our kids back in the building.
So, today, for your #SHSGFC, take some time for yourself. Before we hit the craziness of May, find some time today, or this weekend, to do something you truly enjoy. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Laugh...even if it’s forced.
Go for a 30-minute walk.
Meditate for 10 minutes.
Treat yourself to some dark chocolate...wear a mask if you have to go out and buy some unless you live in Johnson County where those rules don’t exist.
Watch your favorite movie
Dance like nobody’s watching...make sure the Google meet camera is off.
Give someone a big hug...but only if you are both fully vaccinated.
Look through happy photos...remember those photos before everyone had on a mask
Listen to some music from your favorite artist way too loud.
Get 8-10 hours of sleep each night this weekend...I know, that is more than you normally get this time of year in a week of nights, but give it a shot.
Clean the house...mine is not as bad now that my kids are only reenacting Home Alone one day a week
Try out a hiking trail nearby...watch out for large puddles
Get out and do some yard work…there are surely some sticks to pick up after Wednesday night’s storm.
Our social, emotional, and physical health are all vital right now. We need to be at our best to support our students through the month of May. I am not sure what the last month of school will bring us, but we will do it together. Rest up, relax, and enjoy the weekend!

CIP Classroom
On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Jessi Mederios from IMPD presented a curriculum on Body Safety for our CIP students. She presented to the females on Monday and the males on Tuesday. Students learned the difference between good touches, bad touches, and confusing touches. Jessi taught them about privacy, that our bodies belong to us, and 3 safety rules if they ever feel like a touch is bad or confusing. The safety rules were: 1. Yell NO, 2. Get to a Safe Place, and 3. Tell a Safe Adult.
