Newsletter - Term 3 Week 2
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
5 August 2022
Kia ora koutou
Ball night has arrived and we are very excited to see our senior students in their finest attire tonight at the Mossburn Community Centre. Thank you so much to the Ball Committee for organising tonight’s festivities and thank you to Miss Eason for supporting the students with their organisation and teaching ballroom dancing to them.
Tonight would also be impossible without our parents, whānau and friends of NSC helping out with many requests from the Ball Committee and in getting children prepared for the night. From 6.30pm we welcome all family and friends of NSC to come and see our students arrive, complete the grand march and have their first dance.
Thank you to all of our students who have volunteered to help out at Open Night on Thursday 18 August. Last year we had almost half of our students helping in class and as guides. This year the numbers are very similar. Open Night is from 5.30pm to 7.00pm Students involved will receive a light meal at approximately 4.30pm.
A reminder that our parent teacher interviews are this coming Thursday 11 August from 3.45pm to 8.00pm. You can book an interview on the School Interviews website. Specific details can be found in this newsletter. If you are not available to meet with teachers on 11 August and wish to get an update on your child’s progress, please contact the school office or email the staff (firstname.lastname@nsc.school.nz) to arrange.

NSC Covid mask requirements
All schools received MOE notification at the end of the school holidays for schools to make their own decision regarding mask wearing mandates. We have considered this and at this stage our rules are unchanged (see below)
NSC Health and Safety Covid mask wearing requirements:
· Highly recommended for staff/students to wear masks at school and on school trips but not compulsory (remains compulsory on school buses and if required on a school trip – eg. Visiting a business)
· Visitors to wear a mask indoors (unless exempt)
· Contractors/outside providers (eg. Plumber / University Liaison Staff) to wear a mask when indoors
· No mask wearing required outdoors
· If/when in presence of highly immunocompromised staff member/student we may need to provide masks to those present
· We will visit these requirements if conditions change (eg. exponential growth in Covid cases/illness at NSC, MOE/Government mandates reinstated)

Study Link information
Study jargon - EFTS
Qualifying for certain payments will rely on studying the required number of EFTS (Equivalent Full-
time Student).
Studylink use EFTS to work out is someone is studying full time or part-time and to determine on-
going eligibility for payments.
Usually, every paper or course has a certain amount of points or credits that represent the amount
of study or workload you do. The general rule is 0.125 EFTS is equivalent to 15 credits or points.
Student Loan
If your child qualifies for fees-free study they may still need to apply for a Student Loan for
course-related costs or living costs. Only students studying full-time can access loans for course- related costs and living costs.
Remember though it is a loan and needs to be paid back. I’m sure we all know of people who,
while studying, spent their living costs on fun things…
In order to stay eligible for Student Loan students need to pass at least half of their course work (EFTS) over a set period.
There is a lifetime limit of 7 EFTS (around 7 or 8 years of full-time study) for Student Loans.
If your child is under 18 when they sign their Student Loan contract you will need to give
permission – this isn’t as guarantor, the loan repayments will be their responsibility.
