Consent Agenda
Presentations/Reports
- Peter Zondervan discussed that the board reviewed the 2022-2023 budget which is as it's expected to be. They also looked at the budget for the 2023-2024 school year. The only new change is that there will be no ESSER fund moving forward. Employment has also reached prepandemic levels and is expected to continue to increase. Enrollment projection is expected to be a flatline base in term of new pupils. More meetings to come on the passing of May 2023 Bond. Before retiring, Pat Velie requested John Huyck be considered as the Owner's Representative for the district's bond projects. Lastly, WUS held an auction on old buses and a security car, we gained about $30,000 total for the district.
Report from the June 12, 2023 Safety & Security Committee Meeting
- Jeff Koon went over the highlights from the meeting which included walking through safety improvements already taking place, such as creating district maps, updating the glass in the doors at Pine Street, and purchasing a drone. During staff PD, there will be refresher training and full training for both new and returning staff members. They will also be discussing strategies for cyber safety such as avoiding phishing emails.
Report from June 26, 2023 Joint Committee Meeting
- Dan Cassini mentioned that they discussed bus drivers wanting a heads up when a student is having a bad day so they can utilize CKH strategies to assist the student. He also mentioned wanting to start having board members join staff for lunch in their buildings a few times a year.
Governance Team Good News
- Jeff Koon shared that his son is now a permitted driver as of last week. Janel Hott shared that one of Becky Hohnke's exchange students came back to visit and now Ms. Hohnke's daughter is going to visit her in Spain. Norm Taylor shared that he was at the All-Star game last week and he is excited to lead a 12 day tour of major league baseball team stadiums. Tim Reeves shared that it was nice to see Nikki Cardosa recognized as a Fast Pitch Assistant Softball Coach of the Year. He also said it was nice to see Scott Gunderson's wife recognized for her recent release of a children's book.
Public Comment
Administration Reports
- Tim Reeves led the report and began by introducing Leslie Wagner, the new Assistant Superintendent of Finance & Operations. He then shared the monthly budget versus actual report. Lastly, on an annual basis the district goes out to bid on copy paper. The district would like to award that bid to Central Paper. The district also subscribed to the program Papercut, which requires staff to verify what they are actually printing to help minimize paper waste.
Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services
- Teresa Fulk shared that tomorrow starts the 2nd week of summer camp, in which 150 elementary age students are participating. High school is also running a credit recovery program. Over the summer, the district is participating in the Kids Read Now program once again. Teresa Fulk also shared that she and 3 other staff members attended a math conference in Atlanta which they found to be very informative.
Superintendent
- Tim Reeves shared that 3rd grade students will be able to take a field trip this fall in partnership with the Gun Lake Tribe with the goal of expanding Native American cultural awareness. This Wednesday is also the revenue sharing event for Gun Lake Tribe, Tim Reeves will attend as the representative for WUS. He also shared a bond update regarding to the timeline of design and development. Smaller projects have started such as roofing, the goal is to build a new parking lot at the high school this fall so the new pool can take over some current parking spaces.

Jeff Koon no comments.
Norman Taylor would like to welcome our new SRO officer to the district. He is also excited that on Tuesday, October 10th, we will be hosting the MSBOA marching band festival for the first time. He wishes everyone a safe remainder of their summer.
Janel Hott agrees with Norman Taylor about the new officer. She is also excited about working with Leslie Wagner. Lastly, she shared that her and Tim Reeves had a great conversation at their meeting and encourages the other board members to set up their own meeting.
Theresa Dobry welcomes Leslie to the district and wishes everyone a great summer vacation.
Dan Cassini also extends a welcome to Leslie.
Pete Zondervan is excited to work with Leslie as the board's treasurer. He is also glad that the board was able to pass the contracts and policies during the meeting, and can't wait to start on the bond projects.
Becky Hohnke was absent for the meeting.
